  1. i did a job a few weeks ago, which was outside alot of the time and i was using my shiny new loon pole with internal cable along with a loon curly cable. had no problems with either the internal cable or the jumper cable - they are the same cable. though a quick (and not very thorough in case someone points out that i missed it) look at the website doesnt give any indication if their 1018 cable was selected to maintain flexibility in low tempratures i should point out that it was only around 2-4 degrees C so probably not as cold as some will have experience of, but it was cold enough for me.
  2. now all we need is for sound devices, zaxcom and aaton (and anyone else who makes a recorder that allows data entry) to add bluetooth capability
  3. yes. plug what you want to send to the trx900/sta100 in to the 5 pin input on the ifb 100 and that gets sent to the trx combo. note that the ifb100 in is strereo but the ifb send is mono, so you can select wether to send left, right or mono sum.
  4. the sta outputs the ifb that is received by the trx900, the same as if you had the earpiece adapter and receive audio function enabled. there is a page in the menu where you can select either trx output, ifb incoming audio or a mix of both. and yes, it gives you no indication that anything is getting to the rx900, but thats why im running a backup. you can do auto roll if you are in record run with external timecode - set the trx900 to auto load in the extended menu. i think, also in this mode, it wont record if there is no timecode present. you can stop record if you are in the transport page of the main menu and press down. to start recording again press menu to come out of the transport page. as for the last one, you could send timecode out of the sta100 in to ch2 input of the sta100 but it wont be pretty. and if you knew all that and i misunderstood what you meant, then i apologise it would be nice if someone acknowledged the request. or said there was a way of doing what you want
  5. i believe that the trx900 has the ifb receiver and uses the headphone out of the sta100 or 150 to out put received audio. also note that receiving audio is an extra cost, but receiving timecode and volume control is standard. though someone please correct me if that is incorrect. and i have to agree about the sta150 being far far too late for most current users. and whilst we're on the subject, does anyone else think it would be useful to control record function of the trx900/sta100 from the first menu page in the same way you control remote units with an ifb100 - up for record, down to stop. (and to be able to switch this function off for when you are in mono mode). i would find this useful for when running backup when cameras are rolling free run timecode and it saves continually paging through the menu to get back to the transport page and avoids accidentally changing other settings like frequency along the way - which i have done many times. i have tried emailing zaxcom about this about 3 times in the last 8 months but have had no response.
  6. will get some pix up once my 788 comes back off hire. didnt notice any bleed when i tested the cable before i sent it out, but as its all line level too and from camera, it should be ok. but will test it thoroughly when i get the chance. dont think its really a problem to lose an input - i have 7 and 8 set up as a stereo pair but not routed to any track, and have 7,8 selected as the headphone favorite. this still give you 6 inputs which for 90% of what i do is fine, especially with the cl8 where the l/r mix tracks are virtual, rather than being fed from and external mixer. an LED would only show that there was signal on the return cable, but couldnt tell you the quality of that signal, maybe a switch box would work allowing you to switch between the 744 headphone out and the camera return?
  7. thats a nice update. thank you sound devices. but may i make a request (which i will also email directly to sound devices) is it possible to use the highpass filter on line level inputs? as i prefer to use my zaxcom radios at line level out (and so would like you guys to work harder so i dont have to forget to swap between line and mic level with my receivers) but thank you again. and i wonder what else this box will do that you havent yet told us about
  8. on the silver tx, you have 2 pots on the sta100 which you adjust with a little screwdriver, then set your levels on the lcd display on the trx900 to the handy -20db marker. also the sta100 is line level only, but have had no problem driving it from any sound devices mixer or sqn mixer
  9. when i got my 788t/cl8 i made up a breakout cable for my it so it can be used the same way as a 442, with a 2 channel send to camera and 2 channel return as well as a timecode feed. and a set of camera tails with a timecode connector. another mixer who has my 788t on hire whilst he is waiting for his to arrive thinks these are a good idea and wants me to make some up for him too. now as work is quite slow at the minute, this seems to me like a good opportunity to get a bit of extra money coming in, and keep me busy on the days off, but because it would cost me a bit of money to get all the components i think i will need, im trying to gauge who useful this cable would be for other people and if there will be enough of a demand for it. i can also make up 442 hirose out to zaxcom (sta100) input and 788t out to zaxcom in as well using more or less the same components. i have spoken to a few of the suppliers i use and they say that it seems a good idea, but they will also want to know what use there might be for them. any opinions thanks
  10. thats curious. whilst i only have experience of the newer (silver) zaxcom units, ive never had a problem with using line level on the camera. i find the difference is typically one bar on a sony camera (digibeta dsr450 etc) between hard wired to a sound devices mixer and the zaxcom.
  11. do you have sound otherwise? cos personally, i could live without startup sounds
  12. thats a really interesting idea. it would be nice (but probably wont happen) if you could program your keys from your computer, then plug it in to your deva or 788t or cantar and use it as a master controller with additional buttons for whatever shortcuts you feel like having.
  13. do you have the speakers muted? i always have the sound turned off on my macbook and it doesnt make the ta-da on start up, unless i switch it off with the sound turned on
  14. well. i wouldnt want to be that mixer if the files came from my hard drive. but it would be unfair to blame the mixer for having turned in the rushes and someone else, 6 months down the line take the file and put it on the internet. as was said, the files pass by many people, the post facility may be secure but if the insurance company had the files too, who knows how some people may respond to the temptation of a bit of notoriety or internet credibility (is there even such a thing, and does it vanish if you leave the house). im sure im not alone in keeping backups of files i have recorded during a production, usually until the show airs or is screened, but would anyone even think of sharing those files or letting be somewhere where someone with less than pure motives (anyone else but yourself) could get to them or even know what is on there. with regards to the zaxcoms recording transmitter, ive used them in a process car scene as a backup if we got a hit. we didnt get a hit so i wiped the card straight away. if i had needed any audio from the card, i would only have taken the timecode i needed. its still the mixers responsibility to ensure privacy here. i think a producer would need a very good reason to get any other audio from the cards, probably irrespective of me working for them or not. i guess ultimately it means we will have to work harder to reassure talent that we (as we always have) respect and will strive to keep their privacy.
  15. That KT systems case looks nice, I wonder if NP-1 shoe of Remote Audio BDS would fit under CL-8 in that case? Their website doesn't know that model yet. if you mean a shoe like http://www.trewaudio.com/store/home.php?cat=57 then you should be fine. there is enough space in the bag under the cl8 to fit an np1 with about 10mm to spare, i got a hawk woods npc shoe which is only a little wider than the np1 itself http://www.hawkwoods.com/site_pages/products/details/details.asp?title=NPC-SQN4S&tl=adnp1.jpg&tr=np1b.jpg&bl=&br=apac.jpg&x=1&ml=np1c.jpg&mr=apc.jpg which also gives me 4 extra (unregulated) hirose outputs, one of which i use hooked up to a hawkwoods regulated adapter to power radio mics etc also, dont know about the fuse ratings on the BDS, but my with my hawkwoods shoe, if i use one of the hirose outputs to power the 788, it will cut out because of the current draw, so i use the trailing lead instead. dont know what options you have with the dbs if this is the case, though hopefully someone else can say if its an issue
  16. here are some pictures. hope fully you can make out the shelf and the little spacer to create an air gap. there is also a flap at the bottom so you can get to the cf card and dv battery. i just ordered a different np1 shoe so that the np1 will sit underneath the cl8. with the shoe i use at the moment - hawkwoods npu, its too big for the space available
  17. when i first got my 788, i bought a petrol pegz 3 cos it fit my 788 442 and radio mics better than the pegz 2. however when i used it in real life it wasnt so great - too bulky for me. same deal using with the cl8 and 4 lectros - it didnt sit comfortably when i had to wear it with a harness. ive just taken delivery of a bag the ktsystems.co.uk make for the 788t/cl8 combo which has a little shelf for the cl8 and a little bit of space top and bottom to try and keep some airflow around the unit. i will set my bag up later today and try and post some pictures
  18. nice. i would love to get one of the losi 1/18 sacle buggies but i only have a little garden and there doesnt seem to be anywhere near me that races them. one thing to try when you are jumping it is to blip the throttle so the torque of the engine raises the front of the buggy when you are in the air. also, if you can, put thicker oil in the front shocks - you can get some silicone oil from your local rc car shop.
  19. cool. is that a ready to run RC10? - guessing from the shocks. (used to race these bad boys way back when i was 14. great times)
  20. a very failed musician and either a studio sound engineer or more likely, convenience store clerk. maybe i would have made it to management after 8 years.
  21. whilst looking for something with better rf shielding for wireless headphones to give to directors/producers/script supers etc, i came across these people http://www.kleer.com/applications/wirelessheadphones.php which, whilst it looks like it will eventually give us a product that can be used instead of a comtek etc if one of their partners goes down the old school headphone route rather than earbuds, i wonder what it could do if it were incorporated into a radio mic design. now i wish i paid more attention in electronics classes. though the sennheiser product http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/icm.nsf/root/products_sennheiser_headphones_portable_mxserie_502494 would be really cool if they had a lanyard so they wouldnt get put down and lost (at$500 £300 pair) and more than 4 hours battery.
  22. good to see you back scott just got a call to say that my cl8 has arrived in the country and will be with me in the next day or 2. and got an email from SD to say that not having the update shouldnt affect the functioning of the cl8 but as the cl8 was announced a few months after they started shipping newer spec units, they have done much more testing with upgraded units.
  23. was just wondering as on the SD website it says now shipping. what do people who have one think of it? did you have to get the hardware upgrade to get it to work? - some one told me i needed to do so for the cl8 to work, but it doesnt specifically mention it in the SD note about the upgrade. i will get mine upgraded, but it wont be till next year, once we've finished shooting the current show i have one on order but dont expect them to be available over here (UK) for a week or 3 yet. thanks rich

well after thinking about it, i decided to order a loon pole. especially after seeing the mic wobbling about with the extra weight of the tx - i think its a little more than the audio ltd vdb power combo - or certainly feels it, so it will make it easier for cues when im on a long pole, and nothing to do with the amount of exteriors we have coming up and my thinking lazy. honest.
