  1. For those who have purchased the mre slate can you give a opinion on how it's been for you, useability, physical durability, electronic reliability. Thanks, jeff
  2. I am new to this product, I have always used the printed comparability charts issued by Lectro to set my frequencys. I noticed upon the first time that I used the endian program the app showed I had inter modulation between a few frequencys that I thought were safe using the Lectro chart. I was setting 8 units. My question is do other people find this also. Just checking that this occasionally happens and I'm not doing something wrong. I suspect the printed Lectro compatible charts arent as precise once you add a number of transmitters? Or maybe not.... thanks for feedback, I'll do some more searching to see if I missed the answer if it has already been addressed. thanks jeff
  3. Tough to be a manufacturer now a days, we expect anything is possible
  4. Fader panel, please please please.....(linear Jose)
  5. I did some work on a high speed rail line years ago and we were told if you hear the train its to late, you won't be injured you'll be ended. We had to pay attention to specific railroad provided workers who were on the track with their only job being to keep us safe. I think they had whistles and maybe airhorns to warn us if I remember correctly. That safety meeting always stuck with me.
  6. You have to find something other then work to make you happy, otherwise you'll probably never be happy. To many wonderful things we often miss out on when we only look in one direction. Thanks for your honest post.
  7. Thanks for all the input, its making me think outside the box..... I was just brainstorming and one idea I may have come up with is stick this guy http://www.unifiedco...shs1720-01.aspx on the side of my standard mixing headset. And maybe drill out a little spot in the mixing earcup to allow the ear piece tube to go inside the earcup, not sure if it will allow enough volume to hear the intercom if it isnt stuck directly into ear. .....
  8. Thanks for the quick replies, Im using either a mackie 1604 vlz-3 or a mackie onyx 1620 when I run into this situation and I have always been paranoid with mackies of bleed through of signals from one place to another, so for that reason I have kind of always been shy of injecting the intercom signal into the board approach..... but I do admit I am pretty paranoid........
  9. Hello, Looking for any tips on headphone technique when you have to wear headphones such as a sony 7506 to hear your mix, but you also need to have a intercom headset on in order to hear cues and communicate with others when needed. I have owned a clearcom partyline system for about ten years and when ever I use it I am always bouncing between both headsets, or wearing half a headset of the audio mix on one side of my head and the clearcom on the other. It just seems wrong how I have been doing it and would like a better system.... Im sitting behind a panel mixer for a live event or webcast, im never floating around unless I need to take a few steps from the mixer.... Thanks for any help. Jeff Happy impending winter....
  10. Jim Wrote "Let's see. According to the Center for Responsive Politics... In 2011, CTIA, Qualcomm, and other telecom services & equipment companies disclosed $58.5 million in lobbying expenses. AT&T, Verizon, and other telephone utilities spent $49 million." I wont be specific but the company I was working for is in the list Jim Just Mentioned...... Makes a Whole lotta sence now.....
  11. Just did a coporate meeting for a wireless technology company. It was made up of company employees and very bright consultants from various institutions from all over the country, and a few international. I was requested to bring 7 hardwire lavs for the discussions they were having. When I was wiring them up they almost all joked and said where are the wireless mics, isnt this 2012, how come your using hardwired. I told them thats what the producer requested. At the end of the day when I took the mics off I said it was fascinating listening to the concepts they brought up... I then asked what do they see for the future of wireless mics and where should they live on the spectrum. They immediately went into attack mode and said the wireless mic users are just a bunch of squatters that dont belong where they are. There was alot of snickering and I suddenly I felt like the enemy, I said in a very humble and friendly tone"ok thats fine we dont want to be squatters, so where should we go?" No one had an answer and just shrugged it off. One guy siad to me I guess the wireless thing is important in live concerts and such, do you really need wireless for much else? From the looks that I got from them I really felt like wireless mics to them are just a gimmick, nothing really serious that society needs, should be thought of last when it comes to big business. I really thought they would have had some type fo inteligent theory for our future. MAybe they just wanted to get to dinner. Really seemed like they didnt care. Loved that the first thing they asked was "where are the wireless mics" Made me really leave with thinking that the wireless mic users live on a little island that most people dont realize how often they visit.
  12. Hello looking for advice on a digital Hybrid. I have the telos hx-1 http://telos-systems.com/hx/index.html in my sites about $750.00. The use would be for live studio webcasts, with remote call ins. Call ins are interactive with studio participants, Studio participants hear the call through a small pa. All I need is one phone line, call routing is done via a voice conference service. I have done this scenario many times but the phone hybrid is often provided to me by other vendors, figured it was time to add one to my arsenal. Even though Jk audio seems to be what I see many braodcast equipment seller stores carry, I rarely see Jk audio on any of the live gigs I do, I only see them used for quick audio taps in the field....I pretty much only see gentner, comrex and telos for live type jobs. So the question is any thoughts on the hx-1 or any other ones I should really consider in that price range. Why am I not seeing JK...... Happy February all....
  13. It seems to only get harder with age.....My pop was a physical laborer all his life....and his body is really F@@@ed up, he cant do many of the things he used to do for very long, and some activities not at all..........I think of him as the possible ghost of christmas future if I dont take care of myself....I work hard, but I rarely pack mule bag jobs now a days. Its kind of obvious that certain jobs are really unhealthy for us, you don't need a medical degree to figure that out......Physical damage is what scares me most about this career. ...(I'm only 39.....I might just be a delicate flower.....)
  14. Played it today for my crew during a quiet lul when no one expected it.....Got a nice a laugh... Thanks for posting the link....
  15. Hey all, I have 10 pr-216's (age 2-8 years old)and for my line of work I rarely use them all at once.....and most often no more then five at once. I have a feeling I don't distribute them out evenly so some of them get lots of use not much at all. In the last year I have been noticing a number of them seem to have an intermittent power up issue. They power up instantly sometimes, and other times it takes a few switch flips for it to power up. I was about to box a few of them and send them out to their maker and I thought I would ask......has this condition been common to many of you.....has the switch just been replaced, or was it logic....or do you think the inactivity of some of the switches cause oxidation and poor connections..... I am not at all bashing the product I just to have a better idea before I send them out/and If I really need to send them out.... Happy new year all. Jeff
  16. I often dream that my faders are locked into place and no matter what I do I cant move them. Sadly when I think of it.... when I dream about work it is always troubleshooting a problem. When I wake up it often takes me a minute or two to say calm the fuc* down its only a dream.
  17. ALmost seems like one of Larrys april 1st product announcements....
  18. ok after reading my last post I think my issue is I am expecting to much from one device and trying to have only a monogamous relationship with a single mixer. Maybe Monogamy is really for the birds....I should embrace polygamy.
  19. Fine, fine, fine, i'll try to stop whining..Thanks basenji and everyone else for sharing there real world experiences so far............................. when I get my head finally thinking out of the box, maybe I will let my hesitations go. I will probably buy the 8 track so the $$$ aint peanuts to me, I am just trying to express my hesitations, and find real world answers before I pull the trigger. ..I have had a love affair with my workflow with my sd equipment, I love the design, love the common controls I use with a fingertip, they have never let me down, always gotten me out of a bind, made me a better mixer, and make me feel protected on my shoots.....and I guess I am having a hard time letting go of my relationship that I found so dear, and accepting the nomad as my new lover even though she(nomad is a girl of course.) may possibly be better fit for me. yeah that was corny....... ..... All the best Jeff... And jack I did misread your variable pan comment. I dont often variable pan, but I do when I have one mic and I want to send 2 different levels to the output bus's for safety. Not a deal breaker not to have, lots of gear doesn't have the option, but it is handy, I use it when the opportunity arises..... ......
  20. Maybe its just me but I use the quick variable pan almost everytime I use more then 2 mics and I am doing a doc, news, or anything unscripted and am only recording to the 2 channels on camera. When things are not rehearsed and you are making decisions as they happen a quick variable pan is quite desireable. example last job----history channel show--director says "dont know what we are exactly about to shoot, or how we are going to shoot it, but we have one chance to get it, so you need to use your best judgement and make it work. As we were getting ready for the shot to happen with 3 wireless in my bag and both hands over my head holding a 12 foot boom pole......I 100% thought this situation is going to be more of a dance on a nomad. Sure someone might say, well now with the nomad all the channels are isos so who needs the pan.......Well there are tons of jobs that dont want double system. I make a nice living doing many of them.....and a pan control adjusted with two fingers that you almost dont even have to look at to find is lovely. I am pretty sure I am going to get a nomad, but I find it difficult imagining it will be the right tool for every job. And I find it silly if anyone says it will do every type of job better then a sd setup. I imagine I will be using both a nomad with a 442/552 at times, and sometimes just a nomad.... I welcome the nomad, as I welcome Sd to make us something new...... (
  21. Had the option but, my wife said, you got to be fucking kidding me.....so I passed on it....
  22. This is a copy of a older post from another topic I wrote but thought it applied. First Off congrats...... In my opinion being a good dad is all about compromise. Being a good dad takes the concept of "compromise" to a whole other level then just being a compromising husband..... Being a hardcore soundguy that doesnt turn down jobs is not a lifestyle that all wives go for. My wife knows I love what I do, and I know she is happy for me...and she and I know that I could easily loose my life in work because I enjoy doing it. What makes my wife happy is that I can pay the bills that I need to, be a good father to our kids, give her some attention, and help around the house. (she also works full time, so when I work crazy schedules, it just means her life is going to be hellish...) I am pretty positive my home life would fall apart if I worked the way some of my fellow soundies do it (my wifes personality is just not cut out for it, but your wife may be cool with it). I can see it on my ladies face that she is often just humoring me when I tell her about a story on a crazy/fun gig. What she is probably thinking is who is doing the laundry, taking out the trash, taking the kids to school, when will we have time to go on a vacation again,,, and it would be nice to go out on a date...... When my wife and I got serious she said she would rather see me more even if we made less money. So far thats how our relationship has played out. I work on very ordinary jobs, and really feel like I work well under my potential trying to keep my work and home life in balance.......(I have a feeling this will change as my kids get older and my wife gets sick looking at me. We have been married 7 years and have 2 little ones.) My ego absolutely wants to work on the bigger or traveling jobs I once used to, or the bigger ones I get offered now, but I try to keep my drive in check.......but holding that ego back is a constant struggle I tell myself I will never regret spending more time with my family, and less time developing my career. But I am pretty sure I would regret missing out on my family as a result of spending to much time on my job. And what I just wrote I have to convince myself on a daily basis,,, I am absolutely pained when I say no to a weekend job,(although I do work the occasional weekend) or don't go away on a good traveling gig(does that exist). In my heart I would have little problem working on holidays birthdays graduations, etc......I always have to jog my brain to remember their will be consequences to my actions if I do what ever I want to. I do get upset that I do not have all the toys I want to because I loose out on many jobs and $$$$$ because I just don't take them because they dont fit into my current plan. I think the career of being a soundie is the career that you choose to make it. And I feel it is always evolving. as I said I work on pretty ordinary stuff, but I do make what I consider a decent living...... through experience one often finds what works for them and their wife/partner. Its up to you to follow that plan, or suffer the consequences. Not to say you shouldn't push the envelope every now and then but I think consequences are obvious, for me when I think they are not obvious I am usually just in denial. And I admit in a couple years when I reread this post I might say wow I had it all wrong, I should have done what ever I wanted to do because my career would have been stronger, and my family stuff would have worked out......so I guess thats a question for the guys older then I, whats more important sacrificing for your family, or just take what ever gig you want, and let everything just play out..... I think we are often nervous to say no to jobs because of the uncertainty of our paydays.....What I have found in 16 years is when I say no to a gig, tommorrow still comes, and so does another paycheck.(I only say this after the fact....at the time of me passing a gig, I dont feel so confident) I think this is the greatest business when you are in your 20's, single, and don't own a house...........Im 39 now and still love my job, but it gets waaaaaaaaaayyyy more complicated when you have to think about people other then yourself......... Again Congrats, you will see the whole world in a new way, a wonderful way, and the concept of living for me, me, me will slowly evolve in a way you never imagined...
  23. " if the prices of the gear we buy actually related to the rates we get paid.... " sorry, that would be backwards (not to mention impossible pricing)... Look its my fantasy no matter how irrational it is.....cant I dream?
  24. Was just doing some pick up days on a very nice doc and the director said to me, ya know good audio is much more important for him then a good picture, if you have bad audio you loose the audience, but with a bad picture, there are so many ways to cheat and still make it work. I think they all know audio is important...... Maybe our world would be so much better if the prices of the gear we buy actually related to the rates we get paid.... If proper wireless sets became $1000.00 multitrack recorders were 2000.00 mixers were 1000.00 good shotguns and hypers were 750. lavs were 100.00 ifb's 100.00 etc. if this was the case maybe the life of a soundie would be a flowers and butterflies.........just dreaming although maybe then we would have alot more competition.....
