Howdy Forum People. It's been a minute since I've been here, but this forum was integral to learning pro sound and to my business' success. You guys were amazingly helpful to me as I learned the business of ENG sound - Thank you! (and yes, I have made a donation to this very valuable site). It was a great (successful/lucrative), albeit somewhat short, career. I am now getting out of the business, and would like to sell my entire ENG audio kit (SD 633, tons of Lectro - all legal blocks, tiny lockits, etc...). My kit is a bit dated, but it all works excellently and has been meticulously cared for. Have any of you been able sell entire packages - or do you end up having to part everything out? Also, where do you have the most success when selling your gear (eBay? Craigslist? Somewhere else?). Thank you! John

Do you think I need to replace the plug or just the joint- and if the plug, where does one buy it (is it something universal I can find at a radio shack, or might it require a trip to Gotham)? Hello most esteemed colleagues. Been a while; grateful you're all still here! After years of seamless perfomance, my UCR 411A seems to have developed a power input problem. It works fine on 9v batts. It works intermittently (and mostly not at all) on the power input (from my bds), which is powering other UCR 411's fine. Anybody have experience with this issue? I'm wondering if it's typically the kind of fix where I'm better off just buying a new one, or a relatively simple fix. Has anyone found a solution without sending it in to Lectro? Finally, since I still have an smqv in that block (21), I'm thinking of upgrading to the srbc. If I do, I'll probably add another sm or smqv to my quiver - do the new sm's have a longer battery life than the old sm's? Thanks!

OK. Been there done that- here’s what I experienced: Great people, friendly customs, not a lot of police presence felt. I had a Carnet, no permits, and was only questioned once on a public beach. Spent most of the week on private property, but 1 day in Dubai, and 1 day in the desert. I was respectful and conservative, but got my shots- scenics in both places; out the car window, on sticks, etc. no problems. Research (google) suggested hiring fixer (2k/day with car PLUS permit fees). Hiring a fixer seemed the safest bet, but it was too spendy for us. If I go back, I’ll fill out the permit paperwork in advance and choose a few locations before I go... Every place I contacted in advance recommended something different (from no carnets to no permits, to only shoot if you’re with a local fixer). Consulate said I didn’t need anything, embassy said I’d need way more than I had. In the end, the Carnet was the thing to have. The rest is probably a good idea if you have the time and/or money to do it. Permit process was very slow- they never got back to me, so if you go that route, start early. Overall - great, hospitable place; I trust my shots will reflect that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi there, my most esteemed colleagues. It's been a while. Glad (and grateful) to be back. I'm heading to Dubai in two weeks to shoot some scenics - general city shots, then to Al Ayn to shoot desert life, and finally to a private club to shoot golf. Does anyone have experience travelling there? I'm curious about how stringent customs might be (I'lll have 12 cases with a carnet), whether anyone can recommend a good co. to provide shooting permits and transpo/fixer for 2 days of broll shooting, whether a visa is required (i've found "yes' and "no" on the web.). It'll just be me and one other guy. We only need permits for public places since it's just city scenics. And the rest of the time we'll be on private property. Any advice/help from someone who's been would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! John Cole

Hello Gang. I've got a job in London in a couple weeks (will be shooting for four days). Need to bring lots of gear. People that hired me have not thought about visa requirements. I WILL get a carnet. Anybody know if I'll need a work visa? I'm working on a show for a famous golfer that will eventually air on cbs, but this isn't exactly a cbs gig... Though the final product will be for us tv. Has anyone been to England recently and did you travel with/without a work visa? Thanks!

I started a thread like this on China travel, and got some great help. Thank you! I am also curious about Vietnam. I'm traveling to Vietnam soon with a tourist visa. Does anyone have experience shooting in Vietnam with a tourist visa? We are travelling into DaNang. We will fly either from Shanghai to DaNang, or from HongKong to DaNang. Trying to predict whether a full audio kit will be allowed, or if I'll have to pare way down (I need the full kit for my work in China right before this, but if customs in Vietnam is bad, I'll have to tough it out on smaller, less pro looking gear). My camera guy is also trying to decide whether to bring a real camera or just shoot on dinky dslr's. If anyone has experience, I'd be grateful to hear how it was for you! Thank you! John

Hello esteemed colleagues. Need help with international travel - best routes through China/Viet Nam. My Problem: I have travelled from JFK to Hong Kong, then taken a car across the land border/ground customs to Shenzhen, but I always have trouble at that particular crossing. The last couple years, I've been stuck at customs at Shenzhen for a couple days. Last year, they wouldn't let me bring in any of my sound equipment. They said they were worried that I might be a journalist saying bad things about the govt. I'm not - it's a golf thing.... I had a good carnet and everything - they claim China is a Carnet country, but I'm not convinced... My current solution: Would like to try to fly into either Shanghai or Guangzouh - I'm thinking they might be better customs points and since it's air and not ground, perhaps I'll have better luck. People tell me that Shanghai is a relatively easy entry into customs, but of course I can find a good direct flight into and out of Guangzouh. My first question: Do any of you have any experience travelling gear into/through China? Do you know if it's any easier through Shanghai or Guangzouh? Also: I have a leg of the journey that has to go into/out of DaNang through Ho Chi Minh City. Anybody have any experience with VietNam Air? Trying to find the most hassel free routes. My current plan: JFK direct to Guangzouh, (work near Shenzhen) then Guangzough to Ho Chi Minh (VietNam air to DaNang - work near DaNang), then Ho Chi Minh to JFK. Any advice on this route? Or do you know good fixers in these places? Thanks! John
