  1. Sorry I made a feeble attempt to search this and couldn't find anything. My 788T broke my Takes into multiple files, all labeled 1,2,4,6. So take 4 is broken into 4 pieces: T04_1, T04_2, T04_4, & T04_6. Every take is broken down this way. It's a lot more items to upload now. Anybody know what I did wrong to make it do that? Thanks! jc
  2. Thanks Gents. I just discovered there is no timecode reader burn in fcpX. How stupid is that? There is a generator, but no reader, so you can read the tc from the timeline, but not source timecode. I cannot figure out how to use compressor to do this, either. Any other ideas? Thanks. John
  3. Hi, I was recording interviews for transcription on a 552. My SD card sh!t the bed during the interviews. I now have to figure out how to make the video files (probably mxf into pro res into ) Super small - or export audio files out of a timeline (with timecode) to get files to a transcription house that they can use. Anybody have experience doing this? It's panasonic p2 files avc intra 100, 1080, 24p. I'd obviously like to find the fastest way to pull this off. I have fcpX and a good macbook pro. John
  4. Howdy. Am working this am, was testing my UM 400 and UM200 and I found that they seem to "pump" or sound kinda like waves crashing (with headphones turned up) when I move the transmitters around. If I hit the antenna against my other hand, I get this same sound. Not sure if it's the mics (perhaps they're wired for sm's) or the transmitters. It happens to a lesser degree without the mic plugged in, but it still seems to happen either way. I don't have this problem on the sm's Happens with just 1 tx/rx turned on. Anybody have this problem? Know of any solutions? Thanks! John
  5. Eerp. I spoke too soon. My returns are still coming in too hot. I can set my input limiter to -3, and my input peak threshold to -1, and my input will limit yellow, but my return input will still turn red. I can't figure it out. It must be that the amp in the camera (for the headphone) is pumping the signal on the way out. I have settled on setting my return tone signal (on the return inputs only) at one light less than actual tone, this seems to keep the return input ring light green unless the camera clips, then it'll turn red. I don't like setting tone at anything less than actual tone, but this seems to give me a more accurate reading of what's happening in the camera. Next time I'll build my hop so that the return comes out of the multi-pin audio out, rather than the headphone jack. JOHN
  6. OK, Rich, I think I finally figured out what you were telling me. My shotgun input was limiting at -3, and my (#68) Meter: Input Peak Threshold was set at -3, so my input limited successfully (showing yellow), and my return from the camera was showing red (even though signal in camera wasn't clipping). I thought red meant clipping -0-, but what it really means is "close to clip and might be clipping, you knucklehead". I reset my input peak threshold to -2, and now that my mic-in clips at -3, and my camera return only shows red at -2, my return shows that gorgeous green all the time in the headphone return from the camera. Thanks for the help. John
  7. OKay, thanks for all the input, everyone. I went with the tc buddy and the ipad/iphone (for now) - here's why: With the TC buddy wifi master (and movie slate app), I can both lock wireless jam-sync'd tc onto a camera, AND send that signal wirelessly to a good sound report app (AND use it for a slate - on my ipad/iphone - in a pinch). So in a sense, since I already have an ipad, I'm getting a lockit box and a slate for less $$ than I'd pay deneke for both (and I can make convenient sound reports should that need arise...) I don't use a slate that often - if I get a call to use one in combat, I'll prob rent a deneke if I don't find a reasonably priced/well-designed clapper case. I think you are all correct about concerns for the durability of an ipad on set, but like I said, I don't use a slate that often, and I'm hopeful I'll get a reasonably priced/ durable case that works with movieslate soon. The biggest draw for me was seeing one of my best clients whip out his ipad during some interviews and use the movie slate app to sync/slate multiple 5D's with a varicam. I really wanted to make the timecode on that slate/app match TC on my mixer's backup sound and the camera's - this'll do that. I'll let you know what I think after I use it in the field a while. Cheers! John John
  8. I just bought this app, loaded (w/in app purchase) on iphone and ipad. Have ordered a tc buddy. Looking forward to working with it. I also have the ambient app, which has worked great, but it's not a clapping slate, and I can't pair it with a wifi option (tc buddy) - tho the ambient app does read tc out of my 788 PLUS it reads frame rate in real time (and fps changes when source fps changes). Since I've been testing it, I have a couple questions: 1. I can sync ipad to iphone using blue tooth, but not wifi (though I have a good wifi connection) - any thoughts about what I might be doing wrong? 2. When I test my headphone jack, it shows 73% (not the recmnd'd 80%) - do I have to get my cables re-attenuated (the jack seems to sync the TC ok)? Also, could this (poor testing/weakish signal) be a reason it doesn't read my fps accurately out of my 788T? Or is it as the "check frame rate" dialogue box indicates, that the app doesn't read that accurately, and it'll always require manual confirmation? Thanks. John
  9. Lots of great advice. Thanks. Will look into that IL19.
  10. I'm in the process of choosing between a deneke smart slate, and ipad/tc buddy system for my slating needs. I know that as far as "build" and "pro gear" goes, deneke can't be beat, but the tc buddy has features that deneke does not, and I'm told that the tc crystal is the same. TC buddy can send wirelessly to multiple ipads on set while it sits on the camera and gets wireless tc from me, and while it also sends that tc to cam. I'm doing more and more 5D work, so I need a solid sync system. The weak spot with the tc buddy is the ipad. Sometimes I have to run with the slate in my bag, for shooters to shoot in the field. I don't want to buy a smart slate on top of the tc buddy stuff, though ( I already have an ipad). Anybody have a good, bomb-proof ipad case that they've used in the field? I'd prefer something that I could attach to my bag or safely stuff in-and out of- my bag somehow. I know I can google this, but I ask here for a response with anyone with hands-on experience. Thanks. John
  11. My return inputs are set to Line. I tried jacking the headphone moni volume to full (and also very low), and reattenuated the tone (at each moni level), but still showing red on the return when the input limits (yellow), and camera shows no clip/limit. I tried just attenuating when tone was sent only to outputs. I tried attenuating tone from RX only. In every case, after setting tone at the appropriate level, and then testing a mic, my return would show red when input was limiting (yellow), and camera was just getting a full signal, without clips nor limits. I'm thinking it must be a hot phone jack on the camera (and I'll just have to trust my inputs, and ignore my red returns - or at least act relaxed if the red gets tickled on the return - while using that particular camera). I'll try it with a different camera as soon as I can. Does anyone think I might be missing anything else here? Thank you, John
  12. Hey Rich, This is helpful. Thank you. My returns are on x1 and x2; I am correct in assuming there's no difference between g, h, and x1 and x2, right? Shouldn't the tone from the 788 generate that signal you're talking about? If I just send tone to the outputs, then I'll only get tone from the camera return, (and it won't send tone to the tracks) right? Still, I'm not sure why my 7 & 8 shows red when the input on the mixer shows green or yellow, and the camera is not maxed out, ...but I know that -20 tone out is registering -20 tone in... I'll look through the menu and see if I can find a red setting that's less than 0dbs. Still, red to me usually means clipping - it'd be good if it only showed that when it was really happening... I'm thinking maybe it's something I just have to get used to... I'll know that generally when the return hits red, then I'm probably limiting on the input, so I can dial the input or fader back a bit, just to be safe... What could possibly go wrong? Thanks. John
  13. I am bringing the camera headphone out into my 788T ta3 inputs, to use them as the camera return monitor. My camera snake is customized so that the headphone out from the camera is split at the mixer to a TA3 right and a ta3 left. Problem is: My shotgun going into the mixer is not clipping, the signal on the camera is not clipping, but my return is showing red. This is disconcerting because sometimes I cannot monitor the camera audio and I rely on the return signal to be sure that it's not too hot. But in this case it seems, it's giving me a false "red". Tone reads unity on the inputs, on the camera, and on the return inputs. I have the return input at mixer set at line Level, and the monitor/headphone volume dial on the camera has been set at various levels and I still get the same problem. Of course, if I put a limiter on my return inputs they don't clip anymore, but that defeats the purpose of monitoring the return since that limit happens after the camera.… I am thinking that the headphone jack is perhaps too hot, or my custom cables are not attenuated correctly. Can any of you think of any other reason this might be occurring, or a possible solution? Thank you! John
  14. i just bought a bunch of gear - need to label everything (including the ends of the xlr's, batteries, boom poles, etc.). Anybody have a favorite label company? I have a p-touch labeler, but those labels wear out fairly quickly. I saw a great plastic label (about 1/2" x 1&1/2"), that looked really sturdy. Asked the soundman where he got it (Nametags are us), but I could not find those labels. Also - now that those iphone qr codes exist, I'm thinking I might be able to create some kind of photo inventory for everything. Anybody have a recommendation? John
  15. I demo'd a Nomad, and the empty battery cartridge powered off the system. If I pushed a bit on the cartridge, the system would just power down. I'm sure it's an easy fix- and it'll be working again in no time. I bought a 788T, cl 8, Comtek, and deneke box (with all accoutrements- rx, tx, mics, etc.). I must say I don't think I've ever researched any product more than I did the Nomad. Been following it since the very first hints appeared a couple years ago. I tried really hard to learn it, and like it. It's clear to me that the Nomad is working great in the field, and that people really love it. I have great respect for Zaxcom, and I do think they're creating the future of sound mixing. I just decided I wanted something that was built for an environment more like war (plus the colored lights on the SD are really cool). This purchase was a fat chunk of my hard earned dough; I think the down payment on my house was less- I can't really overstate how important this forum (and all of your interaction) is to me. Thanks for asking the questions, and thanks to the beta testers and early adopters - you guys make me a bettter soundman. John
  16. Right, W. Ear. I thought it'd be useful to get that TC audio married to the scratch track for when it came time to swap sound - I guess most would likely prefer a slate/clap over a TC audio track that'd need to be converted. I guess I'd assumed that audio track timecode workflow'd be wider spread than just transcription houses.... Still, if shooting short shots, clapping will be junked and post will have to pluraleyes. ...unless/until it's discoverd whether TC audio conversion is quicker. Great point about it not being a common workflow - workflow is trump. Thanks. John
  17. Zack and Jack. Sending hardline code out of nomad, to trx - then to qrx (sound and code) , and finally into camera: QRX will only send TC via another hardline to cam's tc in, right? I just want to be sure qrx doesn't also stamp the audio (L&R channels) somehow... Thanks. jc
  18. I'm hoping it is a cable issue - could also be that the signal is too strong for the 7d, and it's just bleeding over onto the other channel - some of the sounds make me suspect that... On my last test, I could hear my voice from time to time, then a blast of tc audio - of course a bad cable could do this too... Thanks for your help - I'll check that cable next. Really appreciate all of you who take the time here. John
  19. Right - found that, thanks. TC out Left Tip recorded TC on both tracks. TC out right recorded TC on both tracks. Could this be another crappy demo cable - or have I missed yet another thing?
  20. Thanks Zack. I am trying to get the TC to show up just on the 7D file. L and R look exactly the same in fcp - thinking it didn't record a TC audio track. I remember Glen mentioning this should be possible - to get audio and tc into the 5D. I don't see relevant TC that came from Nomad in the meta, and since the audio tracks don't show TC audio, do you know if we are able to see TC on 7D without syncing with nomad sound, or do we only see the correct TC after we sync with nomad(off cam) sound?
  21. But wait - there's more! I just tried the ifb erx1 on my 7D, and there was a lot of hiss. Probably ok for a scratch track, but it'd be cool if there was less hiss - any thoughts about how to minimize that? Also, Is that ifb supposed to be stamping timecode, or is it sending a TC audio track? Finally - and this might be off topic, but it is about a camera hop: anyone know how to get fcp to recognize the timecode from the ifb? I'd like to test this stuff all the way down the line. Thanks and thanks and ever oft such terms are shuffled off with such uncurrent pay!
  22. Errp. Roger that - no tip out. Probably a cable issue then. Thank you! John
  23. Thank you, Jack - that got it into the trx. Does the manual state these kinds of setups/configurations explicitly - I couldn't find such a thing - seems like a lot of unecessary trial and error (thank you for reducing that for me). OK, I got it into the qrx, too. Now I'm not getting it into the camera. Not jamming cam's tc. Zack, I could not find tip out irrc in the qrx menu anywhere. I'm going from 1/8" mini QRX TC in/out to bnc, (but my bnc is padded -30, which could be the problem...). Do you guys think this is a cable problem (I don't have another to test), or do you think I've missed a menu item that will tell the qrx to send TC to the 1/8 mini TC in/out? Thank you! John
  24. sweet, I'll check it. thank you both! jc
  25. Thanks Zack. That uhf signal, what's it do in the camera? It can't alter the camera's (metered) tc, can it? Does it just embed a tc, that you can't see on the cam's meter, and if so - how do you verify it's getting tc from the nomad/trx? My Nomad has the ifb, I'm assuming (is this an ASSumption?), because it's sending ifb to the erx1. I can ifb enable stuff, but my trx continues to show only what appears to be it's own gen: timcode - not the nomads. John
