  1. Using the mic stand and stereo bar is clever for that application ! Very clean, simple, invision mounts, nice. I actually have all those parts, just never put it all together like that. Nice work. I'm dealing with period cars (40's early 50's) so I won't have the benefit of a center console. Probably wind up with fleximounts. Thanks for sharing the pic.
  2. Thanks Rick. For my application I don't think the teardrop windscreens will be enough protection and the round foam is a bit too large. I went to the Nite-Ize site but wasn't quite sure which "flexible wrap thingys" you meant? Are they the devices taped to the mics with the round tops? Thanks again. Geoff
  3. I totally agree with you about the variables however I think my original post falls under your "options and ideas" category. I've done dozens of car rigs but never with a convertible. Thanks for the reply.
  4. Wondering about some solutions for scenes in an open convertible on a process trailer with relatively quiet dialog. 1) If using Schoeps what sort of low profile wind protection have you found effective for open air ? 2) Cubs..again wind protection? 3) I would imagine booming would work for the singles but the reflection would be all over the windshield in the 2 shot frontal 4) Naturally, I would also wire the actors to hedge my bets. Thanks for any suggestions! Geoff
  5. I was in a similar situation on a stage with a cyclorama that had a wicked slap in a few spots. Fortunately I had the luxury of doing a test before the shoot. Comparing: Schoeps MK4 Schoeps MK41 Sanken CS3 Sennheiser 416 Schoeps SUPER CMIT (DSP plus the standard CMIT output) Sennheiser MKH 50 I then took the results to an audio post house. They used a program called Izotope? supposedly it can fix almost anything. They tried their best to eliminate the echo but the SUPER CMIT removed echo better than any solution they had in-house or were aware of...at any price. Note: The mics tested were the mics I had on-hand. There may be other mics which would have performed better.
  6. I'm a diehard Lectro user but I have to admit... that demo is extremely compelling. Along with the recent testing I've done with some other new Zaxcom wireless gear I'd say Lectro has some work to do. Zaxcom (Glenn) you have certainly garnered my full attention. How about a venue style receiver for cart use?
  7. Just a thought with regard to Lithium vs alkaline... I usually use lithium in the Denecke sync boxes ostensibly so i don't have to worry about them. The other day we re-jammed the boxes at lunch and got the green flashing light. 40 minutes later one unit was dead. The Denecke has a yellow light for low battery indication but because the discharge curve is so steep on the lithiums we missed it. Lesson learned, never again on sync boxes ...alkaline or rechargeable...my 2 ¢ And yes Whitney, Charlie and the gang at Denecke are THE BEST. Old school. Mentored by one of the giants of our industry Mike Denecke.
  8. 744T is a fantastic machine. I have two and don't think I would ever sell them. Great for small jobs and a handy backup recorder always at the ready. Two machines, eight years of service without a hiccup .
  9. Here's a follow up on the TRX 742 RF issue. My recent experience along with some other info. Might be helpful... Geoff Zaxcom TRX 742 Evaluation.pdf
  10. OK thanks for the clarifications guys. My trepidation occurs when imagining that conversation with the director or producer explaining why the last take is N/G and I need to swap out mics on the actors because of "Mic" RF issues and the reason I was using the Zaxcom (digital) radios in the first place was because of a marginal but definitely perceptable difference in quality....etc.etc.....a conversation I would rather not have. As far as the plug on situation, according to threads on this site and Zaxcom's user site the RF issue occurs not only when the TRX 742 is plugged directly into the mic, which one would never do in practice, but when used near the mic such as with an Ambient Top Tip or even in some cases at the bottom of the pole. Most of my boom swingers like the TX on top of an uncabled pole. The reports say various Schoeps and Neumann mics have been problematic and vintage doesn't seem to be the determining factor. Since Zaxcom is the only all digital system (that I know of) aren't we assuming the fix lies in the mics themselves and not something in the digital radio design? Pure speculation here because I am nothing close to an electrical engineer, just a monkey turning knobs and getting a paycheck.
  11. Thanks Jeff, I stand corrected. I was more or less hijacking this thread trying to get some resolution to the TRX 742 RF issue which seems similar. I have personally never had any RF issues with any Lectrosonics wireless using them with all types of lav mics DPA included and Lectro plug-ons with Schoeps , Neumann, Sennheiser. I'm trying to move into some Zaxcom wireless but all this RF stuff has me spooked.
  12. Why do these RF problems keep coming up with Zaxcom? Same for the TRX 742. I think Zaxcom needs to start addressing this problem.
  13. Glenn, I've been on the fence about purchasing one of these because of this RF problem. Other than that the unit looks fantastic and addresses many needs not the least of which is powering and transmitting AES42. I really do not want to be dependent upon a cable to solve the problem because cables go bad and cable length requirements vary depending upon configuration. I often use the Ambient QAT and adding a cable to that rig is sort of ridiculous. If the solution is frequency dependent and not mic dependent couldn't you just incorporate the RF solution into the unit itself? I assume this RF would be present in the internal recording as well? I'd really like to get one of these ASAP if we can resolve this issue. Regards, Geoff Maxwell
  14. Low budget, Theatrical TV, Union $30/hr please email: Geoff Maxwell gmax@earthlink.net Thanks!!
  15. PSC just released a drawer module for that cart. It's not on the site yet give Ron a call. http://professionalsound.com
  16. "To me, this is a decision better left to post... but that's me." Marc I totally agree...but often on docs or very short turn around stuff, the mixing I do will be 80% of the finished mix. In those cases it's nice to have a solution for the field. As far as the comb filtering, it really depends on the background noise. Sometimes it's very noticeable some times hardly at all. I'm just really glad to have it in the arsenal.
  17. For the right application it's an unbelievable solution. I often need to do playback just to be sure I heard what I heard. Amazing technology and producers fall at your feet when you save time and solve problems. They also gladly get out their checkbooks! I paid for mine in 4 months and now it's making some good profit. Go for it. There are some some coloration issues which vary depending on the source and background but I've pretty much been able to EQ them out with the Sonosax easily. When you consider the benefits it's really negligible. Not perfect but damn close.
  18. I was recently watching a film with my boom op that we did about 10 years ago. There was a crane shot where we used Audio 2020 or maybe 2000 can't remember. We both looked at each other and said "shit those radios sound great" I used to be all Audio Ltd. but when the frequency situation got bad I bailed in favor of agility, range and convenience. Plus they cost a bunch to tune and repair. But they are by far the best radios I ever heard including every Lectro, Sennys, Sony, micron (I'm dating myself ha) ..and as far as the key test....absolutely perfect response. I wonder if they ever got their frequency agility act together. And I had to laugh about the post above concerning the battery doors ridiculous design. They always ended up with tape holding them on. I really do miss he sound though.
  19. Great for reverberant spaces and as a plant. Needs a good preamp and a light touch.
  20. Hi all, I just received the new PSC Pelican LIFE battery. It's 20AH @12.8V with a Speakon connector. Even though I knew the dimensions when I ordered it, I was very surprised how small (and light 7 lbs.) it actually is! When it comes to electronics, I'm not much of a "do-it-yourselfer", so this was a great solution for me..for both the mini cart (primary power) and the big cart (aux power with the MeonLIFE) I have attached some pics, one with an i-phone to give you a sense of scale.
  21. Anybody ever work with one? How bad is it for recording sound? Time Code in/out? Seems similar to the Canon C300. Here's the B&H link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/853273-REG/Sony_NEX_FS700_4K_Ready_High_Speed.html Thanks in advance... Geoff
  22. I had the first mod done and so far so good. No Problems.
  23. Wow Jeff..."creepersweeper"...that's obscure. Very good. I can't imagine how you came up with that one! Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. Glad you like it!
