  1. Laurence made a believer out of me recently. I was 2nd boom for a movie last week and found myself looking for places I could stick the model 2 in an office set. It would have been no problem, and we would have been able to rely less on radios. At the very least, anywhere that there is a stage, a fisher boom should be found.
  2. So, so true. And some places the cost of living is less, others, not so much. Although I understand the ASA, and recently even spoke with president Loeb about it, I still feel (as sound department members) being divided into separate contracts only weakens us as a whole.
  3. Recently I spent some time in Los Angeles, and thanks to my 695 membership was able to take the Fisher Boom class taught by Laurence Abrams. All I can say is wow. Incredibly thorough and thoughtful class, teaching both current models of Fisher booms/bases from head to toe. It's so unfortunate these beautiful pieces of equipment don't see their way onto sets more often. I feel this way even more after recently taking an ergonomics workshop put on by my home local, 481, and learning that the normal positions a boom operator with a fish pole has to hold (longer and longer, thanks to modern digital shooting techniques) are simply hazardous to one's body. Laurence is a true pro, who appreciates the art of booming, and anyone who spends time taking the class will certainly understand and appreciate his years of experience. Thank you, Laurence! Also a huge thank you to Steve Morantz. I met Steve through this site, while buying some gear from him. (he's got two Sanken CS3-Es I know he's trying to sell right now :-) shameless thank you plug) We kept in touch and found that we knew a few people in common from sets, and when he heard I was in LA he invited me to the set of his current show, Parks and Recreation. Steve has an amazing and charming team, and they have a fantastic set atmosphere. It was refreshing to see how another mixer works, and the requirements of post production on a 'mocumentary' style show, of which Steve is quite the veteran. It was also amazing to see that everyone, even the cast, knew him by name and appreciated his hard work. Thanks Steve! Being one who likes to give loud credit where its due, I figured I'd post here. This site helps unite people from all areas who share the common love for sound, and I find that very cool.
  4. Another big difference, I suppose, is that you could not replicate your issue with another SR unit. Please let us know if you find the solution! My SRs are brand new as well, maybe 2 weeks old, so I'm hoping this isn't some kind of front end issue that requires a recall. (this doesn't seem to be the case, as Nick could replicate my issue with an older SR model)
  5. I never get tired of watching camera operators slam into door frames while wearing these silly things. They are quite cumbersome.
  6. Sounds similar to a little harmonic interference I discovered in the SR, which depends on the relationship of your TX freq, plus your RXch1 and ch2 freqs - they all have to line up in a particular way. I believe Nick Jabour from Talamas did some calculations, which he may post here if he's around today. If all line up right, strange things can happen. Here's the link to the thread where I describe my problem:
  7. I am arranging a Fisher Boom demo/workshop here in Boston, and I'm in the process of putting together some paperwork. What I really need is photos of people operating these beasts. At Emerson College (my alma mater, where the class is taking place) we have a model 3 base on a model 2 arm, of which I plan to snap plenty of photos. What I'm looking for are photos of actual users. I realize I can scour the site and find photos, and I will, but I want permission first. So if you have a photo of you looking sexy on a fisher boom, and you want to be the star of some educational material, let me know and point me in the right direction. I don't care if you're using the model we're teaching on, just photos of people using the boom will work. Thanks!
  8. Thanks! To clarify, Besides LA, I've only worked here (besides the occasional weekly trip to where have you) so I honestly haven't got much worldly work experience. Now we'll see if I put my moola where my mouth is when the incentive eventually goes away, as they all will sooner or later.
  9. Robert seems to be saying anywhere with a film tax incentive is an undesirable place, which is why they need an incentive. At least, that's how I read it. I tend to disagree, at least for me. If the work left Boston, I'd stay right here anyway.
  10. So, what you're saying is 'sound mixer hell' won't be re posted on JWSound again until 2013?
  11. I would also stear pretty clear of a 250mw tx on a bag with no tracking front end, regardless of block coordination, but only tests will tell you for sure. If you're thinking of buying rent first! The money for a 411a may be well spent in your case.
  12. My issue was between my talent transmitters. Yes, I could replicate it with just one transmitter on Distance between the transmitter tuned to 550.000 and either SR helped, yes. A 411a is an amazing receiver, but I've had luck with standard front end (used 401s in this config) with a proper intermod as long as the scan is clear.
  13. Yes, I had three transmitters on the bag during the day. When I got home, however, I was able to re create this with the SR and one transmitter. Everything else was off, and disconnected from my BDS.
  14. Hello! Before you judge, I fully plan to contact lectro, but its too late right now and I'm curious if anyone has had a similar issue. Today, I was mixing a show using 2 brand new SR receivers in block 21. I have 4 talent wires in 21, and did an intermod check using Freq Finder. For some reason my first channel, tuned to 0A (538.600) was taking a lot of strange sounding hits. I noticed that when it would take a hit, the pilot tone would disappear, and the audio would drop with a loud reverberant pop, but the RF stayed full. The talent on channel 3 of my system was tuned to 7C (550.000), and I noticed that sometimes when I would take these hits, I would hear cross talk from her. When I got home I decided to investigate further. The same issue happens on both of my brand new SRs: IF, on one SR unit, with no transmitters on, channel 1 is tuned to 0A(538.600) and channel 2 is tuned to 50(545.600) than channel 1 will show full RF when a transmitter is on and tuned to 7C (550.000) IF you change channel 2 away from 50, this phenomenon will not happen. Stranger still, the reverse is not true. If channel 1 is tuned to 50 and channel 2 is tuned to 0A, the results are not the same. Something about the combination of those two freqs will see a lot of RF coming from the 550 range, but only if the settings matched above. Although I didn't try for long, I couldn't make other combinations re create the issue. I could, however, re create the issue on both of my new SRs. What the heck? I'm calling Lectro tomorrow, I'll report back with what I find out.
  15. You aren't out in the cold with nimhs, per chance, are you?
  16. did the same as you Matt, except with a rock n rolla. Keep in in the car in case of 90 minute OTFs. Luckily I haven't done much pack mule work in the past year.
  17. While I didn't work on this particular show, I can tell you that a 788, 8 receivers, 3 transmitters, and 4 VPXs with a battery distro is nothing out of the ordinary. Those in 'reality' can expect to wear those rigs 12+ hours a day, 6 days a week.
  18. 2 volts TC output here, use it every day. It's a great way to work!
  19. I wasn't really fair in my previous post, as I don't know your specific situation, but I do know you to be a fantastic mixer. I know you always go the extra mile. I just get apprehensive about giving something so expensive away for free. I've used gear when not being paid for it (used to swap my mkh 60 for ME66s that I often got in pre built kits), and it's not fun if it gets damaged, plus the perpetual natural wear and tear... If it's possible, borrow or rent the mic and do a field test on a shoot with the rough conditions. If they're happy with the results then negotiate at least some money to make your investment worth your while, and always get your gear on the company's insurance with some paperwork to show it! Now I've pulled this way too far off topic anyway. You'll be amazed at the light weight and directionality of the CS3-e. Hope you're able to get some surfing in this summer.
  20. I'd vote for the CS3-E. I would also vote for you not buying something to use for producers who provide you gear and don't care about sound. If they aren't paying for a rental, and the gear they give you isn't cutting the mustard, that's their problem. At least that's how I feel after 4 years or getting severely under paid by them :-) Hope you're well Dave!
  21. schoeps CMIT5u and schoeps CMC641, depending on the situation.
  22. XLRs are fairly easy if you can solder. I actually tend to get parts locally because I have a cheap source but I'm sure others will chime in with good places online. For Hirose, the connectors are a pain to find and solder, my suggestion is to buy a hirose-hirose power cable, cut it in half, and solder the bare ends into XLR4s. Then you have 2 cables where the hirose ends have been professionally built.
  23. Here's a screen shot from this behind the scenes video of TED. This is me booming Seth MacFarlane as he performed the TED lines in full mocap wear while on set. We fed him the other actors in his comtek, and fed his lines to the actors with in-ears when they were too far away to hear him, so that they could interact. He's sitting up looking at pictures to emulate being teddy bear sized.
  24. I've heard great things about this program, and grew up in Maine. Very cool! I'll have to go check it out one of these days.
  25. Red Epic has a 120ms delay while rolling. OK, delay audio to match picture. Director decides "hey, I want to be on set for a take", now he hears the real actors plus the delayed headphone feed. "WHAT IS THIS DELAY? SOUND??? WHAT IS THE PROBLEM??" But they don't want their headphones to be out of sync with monitors either. And then they want to know the 'fix' ... "This didn't happen last time; our last sound guy didn't have this problem!" (the funny thing is, according to the 1st AC, the last shoot they did was on an epic as well, and they had the exact same problem.)
