  1. I volunteer if you need any more Virgin Idiots for testing
  2. Knowing a little about the Sydney market, my advice would be to first work as a 2nd, or one of the TV networks. The main mixers on the bigger reality shows do look for audio assists, and the networks are a good way to cut your teeth, whilst under the umbrella of full time employment. The reason I say this is because it is a smaller market, and to make the leap from working on no/low budget jobs to getting work regularly as a freelance mixer can be a big step and take time. You would be competing against already established mixers. By being an assist or working at a network, you will also be networking at the same time, whilst working with gear, making a reasonable wage, and not have to invest in the gear
  3. Your client sounds like a pair of old shoes. As comfortable as they used to be, it's time to get a new pair to keep on moving up.
  4. I once tried to up sell a Producer. I said things like - "but he's got a mate who's a DOP who owns a Red Camera" "He's got a Subway discount card" "He counts to 10 like this 1, 2, 3 miss a few, 12" "He's very passionate about his projects, and expects everyone else to share that passion" and "He only has $300 for sound inc gear, but he will come and wash your car every Saturday for 6 months" But nobody would buy it, um, I mean him...
  5. If you do make one for a long mic, could it be called "The MEGA CYCLONE"?
  6. Better to do the right thing and carry them on - imagine how embracing it would be for the airline to X-ray your cases and find them. Your name is called after you have boarded the flight. You then delay take off while you get your lithium batts out and do a walk of shame back on to the full aircraft with the other passengers blaming you for their delay. This happens..... This happened only a few weeks ago to the DOP I was travelling with. I always carry mine on board. Ended up lending my V-Locks until his got couriered to him.
  7. Recently got a DPA4017B. It is a really nice microphone.
  8. Just finished a doco with a well known A-List actor, and the normal became "Let's rehearse on film". On the second last day, after 5 weeks of shooting, we set up a shot, and during the "rehearsal" I got a few splats on my radio mic. The producer and director looked at me and asked "did you hear that?" To which I replied "it's ok, it's only a rehearsal"...
  9. Mr Old School, I would think it's more a case of what you've forgotten : D
  10. If you pay for my flight to SF, you can test mine : D
  11. Hey mate! As the guys have said, be careful of the dust, take some cans of compressed air. There is a Jaycar there called Alicetronics. Also, wear light long sleeved shirts and pants, A for the sun, and B for the dust. Your looking at around 35-37 degrees Celsius during the day and 18-20 degrees Celsius during the nights, the temperature drop is huge in the evening. Get some sting-goes, Lucas pawpaw and Panadol. Sting-goes is for the mosquito bites, Lucas Paw Paw for the chapped lips, and Panadol for if you get dehydrated. Bushmans is the strongest repellent, but would eat the paint of a car, but there are some nicer non smelling ones you can get from the supermarket. The rest is fairly self explanatory, sunscreen, plenty of water, and snacks. On the gear front, I've never had any troubles working there or in more extreme environments. As long as your aware of the dust, there's nothing really much to change. There are two great restaurants there, one is an Italian place called La Casa, on the northern end of the Tod Mall, just across the river. The other is one of my all time favourites, it's a Thai place called Hunnamans, in the hotel with the Casino. The Chilli Crab Trumpet Mushrooms are to die for. There is also a decent coffee shop in the mall, in a little arcade on the right just up from the KFC end. Have a great time there mate, and if you have any questions give me a call. I've been there maybe 30 times now over the years.
  12. Are you the one in the singlet Jason?
  13. I've got a client who is talking about doing a similar type of job. The warning from the company is not to venture outside the huts at night as it has been known to have spears thrown onto the grounds from outside. I have been there a few times and it is beautiful, but Port Moresby is known to be one of the most dangerous places in the world to live. Don't take anything for granted. Also investigate if you need any shots and need to take Malaria drugs. And look at wearing lightweight hiking pants and long sleeve shirts to help with the Mosquitos and the humidity. The locals have a drug called Beedlenut, which you can tell if they are using it because of the red stains on their teeth, it gives you a mild high, but can also make people a little nasty. Have fun, good luck, and be safe.
  14. Where about's in PNG are you going?
  15. Loved the video, the new products look awesome, and how many takes did you do with the Pretzel Jack Norflus? I reckon I would've needed at least 3 Pretzels to get it right ; )
  16. Thank you Mr Wexler for continually trying to improve this community, but if it ain't broke, then grab another glass of wine : D
  17. Sadly, I don't need much foil...
  18. If it's still under warranty, and this is a known problem, you should be able to get a refund or replacement under Australian Consumer Law.
  19. You have lots of foil Mr Mega?
  20. The choice we have is great. It's like going to a big hotels buffet breakfast, but instead of one omelette kitchen, there are dozens, all offering up their own flavours, and continually tweeting them to taste. Cheers to all our vendors(omelette makers)!! P.S I'm hungry now...
  21. Another tip I was given was to tie your outer gloves on a rope/string(whatever really) so you can quickly take them off or put them back on with no fuss of having to put them somewhere.
