On a side note you can achieve almost any control wirelessly of the nomad (except fader control and heaphone volume control ) with a 40$ Tiny bluetooth keyboard.

can it record on a card AND a usb stick (or a second card)? I like to have a backup when i hand over my files.

Not if that's been discussed here but have you seen this? It s like a tascam dr-10 that works on a AA. Wireless remote roll is cool but how can u be 100% sure that it rolls when u press that button? Interesting and cheap anyway. Will this be sold in the USA? Now that s the big question.

- a new nomad with a real battery slot, zaxnet antenna on top and power distribution similar to what rado did.

- a two channel lectro transmitter.

- a six channel wideband reciever from lectro that could fit in a bag and output aes.

If i may ad an advice:

A coiled boom cable with a smalljumper in the bag side + Internally cabled boompole + straight headphone cable (like on the hd25's) will make things nice, fast and out of the way.

oh and if you get a snake, get a quick release connector on each side and right angled xlr connectors.

last thing you want to do is to get in your own way by getting tangled.

Good question, a quality two part cable adaptor would be better. I still haven't found anything other than to have them custom made.

and same question but asked differently: can you send different mix/channel to the standard ta-3 line output AND the optionnal xlr5 balanced output?

 

so if understand correctly, the options for the xlr sized output could be:

 

- 2 balanced analog outputs

OR

- 4 unbalanced analog outputs

OR

- 2 AES pairs (4 channels)

then there is also the 2 channel ta-3 output that will send unbalanced.

Let's say i want to send 4 independent channels to camera will i be able to route differently the two channel balanced line output AND the two channel unbalanced outputs on ta-3?

And last question: how would you tipically monitor a return feed from a camera in this recorder?

Hi all,

i m contemplating the idea of stepping up my antenna reception in my bag while remaining light and portable.

Vast majority of my work my reception is sufficient with whips but once in a while i need that extra range.

For now i got 3 lectro srb's (two in block 22 and one in block 25).

i know i could get dipole antenna type to plug directly on the sr's but maybe allowing to remote my antenna to up to 15 feet would be better.

size and weight is a priority in my choice of equipement and i d rather not have to put another piece in my bag permanently. Just something i could plug directly to the srb's sma when needed.

A two channel transmitter would be cool for camera hop.

A model for the nomad yes with a sma connector for the zaxnet antenna and space for 2 sr's and a distro.

Talking about demand, is it in the plans to design a dashboard with a vertical battery slot for np1 and integrated dc distribution?

My ideal model would be 2 srb and one np1 slot fit for nomad.

Slightly off topic but gotta ask while we re on subject. Have any of you guys ever operated a prompter AND mixed at the same time? Seems doable if the mixing part is basic like a one person sit and talk to camera thing.

From what i can see a zaxcom zfr200 is listed at 950usd from trew's website.

I have to say that i m very impressed by your project. I own three of these so a tc solution would be amazing.

Since these devices work with infrared transmission have you considered develloping an app for a smartphone equipped with a tiny infrared transmitter hardware device instead of building a whole device?

You can also switch the zaxnet antenna to a much smaller one. It will be less in the way and will stress less the connector. Ambient makes a tiny one. Range will not be drastically diminished. Appart from small glitches in the beggining my nomad has been very reliable for me. It never let me down. I do wish that certain design elements were different such as: - Faster dedicated record button on the right - integrated battery slot (np1 or equivalent) that have enough capacity to power and distribute power to a bag for 4-5 hours. - foldable sun hood - more durable screen - zaxnet antenna on top But all in all i love my nomad.

For Zoom to make these at a "game changing" price point they will have to sacrifice something. Zoom products are cheap partly because of the large amount of units they can produce and sell and field recording is not a large market relative to the other markets Zoom has all but flooded. I suspect a questionable time code generator with low accuracy would be one such skimp. Also, I would wager their limiters will be less than ideal and Zoom will be incorporating recycled technology from their H series (Preamps and all). There is also the question of how it handles Poly and Monophonic Wav files as well as Zoom's very questionable reliability. I do however like the form factor and redundancy on the SD cards though. These will probably flood the market just long enough for Zoom to make a profit right before they all start croaking.

A lot of good points there. I do hope higher end manifacturers note good design elements of that device.
