  1. I'm not sure about the tax laws in your country but what about a lease on the equipment? Talk to an accountant and find out about the best way to aquire plant for your business, it'll be worth it. A bank loan is only one method and sometimes not the best when it comes to tax issues. Remember, you are a business and finance companies/banks want your money so shop around and get professional advise before you commit to a loan/lease/hirepurchase agreement. Regards, Grant.
  2. Me too, last time I did a freebie was on a nearby island. I looked upon it as an excuse to do some nature recording at a great location in my down time. Turned out the director was full of s**t and we "worked" 12hr days plus because she was so unorganised. I ended up refusing to plug into the camera... Now I just say no unless the person is a personal friend that has an industry record. But in saying that... around ten years ago I worked on a project that travelled around the world for a month , included driving across the US and through Europe for a friend of a friend. I managed to negotiate a fee that was close to my average monthly income (the only paid crew member!) and don't regret it at all. Pity all offers that followed were a waste of time. I suppose the moral of the story is that you will work on some freebie turkeys but you never know whats around the corner... networking is everything. Regards, Grant.
  3. All I know is that I heard the camera mic on air... Grant.
  4. what about the editors that just listen to channel 1, don't read notes on tapes/cards or are just too green to know what to listen for? I've had my share of "cam mic on air" because of the above. And yes, notes included and producer/director notified. Grant.
  5. Sounds like Robert may be correct then. But still, if not... Grant.
  6. So the distortion is on both the boom & radio tracks and not an equipment issue, then: It's possible that he actually sounds like that, I've noticed it happen with several people (all men) over the years. Did you take the headphones off and listen to him? Grant.
  7. Try PM'ing "Tim Aptor" , he can be found in the members list here. I'm sure he's from SA and may be able give you some local knowledge. Regards, Grant.
  8. Have you never worked on a corporate video where someone is putting in place the latest recommendations from a marketing expert? That's all he's doing, improving the bottom line by pointing out an area that can be improved. Well, we all sort of are by doing a good job on set. Anyway, this is what I do as my other business: http://naturesounds.co.nz I say great business idea! He's found a very profitable niche with no competition. Regards, Grant. http://naturesounds.co.nz
  9. The first question really is, what do you plan to record in stereo? If it's nature sounds then forget about using the sennheiser 418 , it's usually fine if you're in the city where the ambient noise covers the self-noise of the mic. Secondly, a lot of people use the mkh30 in a standard mono rycote.(just clip it on top of your mkh50/60) It's not essential to use the stereo rycote blimp but it will help in high winds... Grant.
  10. More then you ever need to know... http://www.shootfirst.co.uk/lightbulbs.htm Regards, Grant.
  11. This was my office a few months ago , we were working on the launch of a new animal drench product and I managed to take some snaps during the pack shot. St Arnoud , Nelson Lakes, New Zealand. Regards, Grant.
  12. Curly, Re: the FR2 The combo input XLR's are at mic level and the TRS are line level. (can't remember if -10 or +4) Much like a lot of semi-pro recorders. Grant.
  13. I'm getting around 6hrs in older um195 tx / 195D rx The good thing is I'm not bugging talent about switching off during downtime , on my last show the presenter always asked me if I wanted to turn of the TX after a scene. He was pleased when he found out I was using rechargables as he's a bit of a greeny and didn't like the waste. (a BIG plus for me too) Grant.
  14. I've used it a few times now , as a result I always have a sanken mounted and ready to go in my kit. Well worth checking out! Grant.
  15. Here in New Zealand you can get it from an outfit called Para Rubber. http://www.pararubber.co.nz I went to a surf shop and asked... Grant.
  16. You can shut off the fan while in record mode , it's in the menu. (ie: runs when not rolling , turns off during takes) I had the assistant configure that last time I had a project that used the RED. Just don't ask me where in the menu it is though... Grant. update: The Latest RED manual for version 1.8.1 is here: http://www.red.com/support Look at page 33 onwards for audio related issues. (looks like the fan slows down, but doesn't stop)
  17. Chris, I do that all the time. I have some squares of fake fur that I use, both on the inside of a shirt to lessen chest hair noise and/or over a sanken rubber mount or millimic turtle mount to stop wind. As always sometimes they work wonderfully , other times I'm thinking oh damn now what... I also have some fabric from an old rycote high windcover that are good for lower profile rigs, roughly 1 inch square. One thing I've noticed is that when placed between the offending chest hair and shirt it will deaden the voice some (less chest resonance), a small trade off I think. With the millimic turtle mount I just put a spot of topstick to hold the (other brand lav) in place or even use bluetac sometimes ,also it helps to put a small strip of TS on the "overbar" to hold fabric/shirt in place. Grant.
  18. I'm pretty sure you'll go for the CS-1 in the echoey studio , the 416 just makes it sound "muddy". If you can, split track the cos-11 / cs-1 and compare afterwards in a better playback environment , you'll like what you hear. Grant.
  19. Jason, I use a CS-1 and am very happy, It's now my standard ENG mic. small, light and good reach / side rejection. Mines been from -10c to 40c & high humidity without any problem. Fantasic for IV's in noisey offices where you would usually have to resort to a lav and also matches well with the cos-11 too. (BTW, it's in my old 416 rycote blimp) Grant.
  20. Well, Seeing as it's video and not film you can probably get what you want for your budget. A good starting package can be rounded up from the consignment lists at various production audio specialists. You'll find most sound people tend to look after their equipment , I brought my entire rig used as I was low on cash just by looking for good deals and asking questions both locally and out of town, it took a few months but once I noted what I wanted it didn't take long to find to spot a deal. I just wrote this off the top of my head and am sure you may or may not wish to use different items. All of these are field proved and will hold their price , you won't be dissapointed with any of them. With some shopping around you should be able to find them used, in as new condition for about 60% (?) of their new price. suggested kit: sound devices 302 mixer sennheiser 416ph or sanken cs-1 & rycote kit. (softie?) 2x lectrosonics radios (you choose) 2x sanken or trams lavs boompole of choice (12ft seems to work for most eng apps) cable loom to camera & various interface cables ie: mic/line to lectro xmitter , spare boom cable etc. Sony 7506 h/phones. Try these links: (in no particular order) All these places give you a "cooldown" period to make sure it is indeed what you wanted. http://www.trewaudio.com/consignment/ http://www.gothamsound.com/main.shtml?page=usedgear http://www.locationsound.com/proaudio/ls/used.html http://www.colossalsound.com/ Grant.
  21. I was just thinking about that Dave.... I know some guys in an advertising co that run macs with no problems what so ever , where as another (accounting) company the same size have a tech on staff to look after the pc's. Grant.
  22. Not jumping on any band wagon but I love my emac 1.4Ghz , G4 , 1gb ram. I'm a computer novice and don't know much more then how to send emails and use it for my protools mbox. I had very bad luck with my first pc and sent it back twice in the first month due to it having major issues with going past the start up screen... So cut a long story short ended up going mac due to such a bad experience with both the reseller and the pc itself. The platform wasn't an issue, the fact the pc wouldn't even let me start using it was. ( 2 different machines!!) My macs locked up twice in 4 years.... not bad going considering my ex GF's pc crashed once a week not to mention the virus problems. So for me, 9.5/10 for mac! Grant.
  23. It's not a dumb question but... If you had to give up being a musical director , how are you going to cope with being a sound mixer/boom op as it can be a lot more physical ? I'm not the unfittest guy on the block but even then I still am tired after a 10hr eng/efp day carrying a SQN, 2 radios and boom mic. I imagine you may even have some trouble jumping into the low budget film production market after a break. If thats your market, just rent till you earn some extra cash or work out what you can afford that offers the highest return. (costs Z returns Y ,Vs cost A and returns Not trying to burst your bubble but just trying to highlight some points you may have overlooked. Whatever happens , good luck! Grant.
  24. I've had the bomber comment a few times too , lost count the number of times I've been asked to clean cobwebs on location with my "fuzzy thing". Then there's the cameraman that wanted to wire up the busty talent... As they say... glory , respect , money. you can only pick two Grant.
  25. last year I did some work for the fire dept and ended up surrounding an officer with jackets on LX stands for a voice over at a local station. Got some strange looks though while setting it up... Grant.
