A few examples for sounds I'm recording:

Hits/impacts (such as shutting a door, punching/ hitting a trashcan etc.), additional sounds such as screeches, falling rocks etc., but also some quieter and more textural sounds (dripping water/ dirt, lighting a match, …) ...so also sounds that might be better categorised as Foley. But they are all sounds that will be processed, mangled with and layered in a daw (sometimes with synthetic Elements) to create sound effects.

If those are the sounds you're recording and complaining that the mic is too noisy, you're doing something wrong and it's your recorder or a faulty mic. BTW, what is your recorder? Please don't say a zoom (the F series is ok, H not so much)

I've used multiple 416's over the years with various professional recorders and never had that mic sound noisy with those sort of sounds. Something is wrong somewhere & you need to investigate more before spending money on a new mic.

Just my opinion and as always I reserve the wright to be wrong.

That said, if I were doing a lot of SFX recording I’d have a few different mics because, just like having a set of different sized wrenches, not one tool is going to be the right one every time.

    What Jon said.

As others have noted, what sort of FX are you recording that require such a quiet mic?

Also, even 13db self noise is quiet. I use a mkh 40/30 m/s pair and find self noise (mkh30 is 13dbA, mkh40 is 12dbA) isn't generally an issue unless my locations are VERY quiet, under 32dB SPL I start to get a bit of mic noise. (yep some of my recording locations are under that)  Make sure you're not cranking the h/phones too loud as that can give the impression that you have more self noise than you actually do. Don't forget often what sounds noisy in h/phones is often ok on speakers.  Well, depending on what you're recording..

I’ve got an audioroot battery system that has been great but I’ve been having a few issues. About a month after I bought it, I put it on charge the night before a shoot and went to bed. Woke up the next morning and it hadn’t charged. Found out there was a short in the iec type of cable so I replaced it, that fixed the problem for awhile. Now it’s been happening again where the battery will not charge but it doesn’t seem to be a bad connection because the light is responding to whether or not the battery is plugged into the charger, but it’s stuck on one bar.

Im trying to decide if I should stick with audioroot or switch over to remote audio.

Sounds like a faulty battery? , contact whoever sold it to you as they do fail. (other batteries charge fine?)

I have 2x 48Wh, 3x 96Wh. No issues after 18 months, have both the RSS & IE single bay chargers and am very happy. Love being able to see the realistic run time on my mixer with a load (SXR4+) rather than guess as I did with NP1's.

Hi Mathias, is your bag an OR30? I have a very similar set up, and I'm going to replace my old petrol PS607. I'm looking for something a little larger then mine, and the OR30 seems a good choice. Thanks a lot!

I currently use the PS607 for my SXR4+, sure the OR30 has slightly more room but honestly I prefer the 607 as it seems to conform to my body rather then sit against it. I'd recommend trying the OR30 on before purchasing, you'll understand what I'm saying then.

    hey patrick,

yeah, i have the daylight/night time switch programmed into a  button on part of the screen screen so i can change it on the fly. but still, its just not bright enough. i got a delkin 2.5inch digital camera collapsible screen hood which works and helps a bunch. its also nice because you can take the hood on and off. works like a charm. screen is definitely not as bright as the x3 screen or the sound devices and zaxcom screens though.

I'm the same and find the screen hood really helps, even then I'm struggling to see the screen on a bright summers day at times.

    Any hints at price?

Not cheap (expect around nzd$1500 but that's pure speculation.. ) , as a biased rx4+ owner it'll sound awesome and make your boom mics sound simply fantastic. I'm very impressed with the quality of my mkh50/dpa4017 through the rx4+ preamps so far, what's more I'm often asked by long term clients "what did I do?"...

The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is not having any balanced analog outputs. Any chance of making that analog output a TA5 so that we can get balanced signals?o have but for me I will use analog much more often.

As most of us are running cables 6inches or so into a mixer/recorder, unbalanced analogue isn't really an issue.

    But that's the theory..

    Me, I'll be using AES.

  7. Just an FYI:

The CH7000 charger from inspired energy will charge smart batteries directly from a solar panel.

    https://www.inspired-energy.com/products/ch7000/

I'm about to get the ch7000 as I have a few field recording projects coming up where I'll be away from AC power for a few days/weeks at a time.

My friend used to mod RV's so we're going to be installing solar panels etc for my campervan in the next few months. (it's currently spring here in New Zealand)

  8. I was always happy with my mkh8050 in the middle of a 2 header IV, 1-2 inches towards the quiet talker.

(Due to other reasons I now use mkh50's)

Always found a mkh40 a bit wide for my IV locations, even on a 2 header. I understand your thinking but the 8050 has a wide enough pattern from around a foot+ away for a 2 shot, well, it sounded fine in my situations.. If you can, have a listen with your kids or other family members sitting on a couch like a 'real IV', I found that's the best way to check mic's. My kids often turned into fake IV subjects when testing new audio kit.

If under 2kg would you go with a shouder strap? I'm looking for a small bag for the Sonosax-SX R4+.

I use the Petrol PS7 for my SXR4+ kit, it's the perfect size/weight with the AH-2HB Portabrace Harness and waist strap. I've been using this setup for the past year without issues. Tried an Orca32(?) but the PS7 is easier to manage and fits to my body shape better. (I'm an average size dude, no big belly yet..)

PM me if you want more photos, this is just one I found in a hurry.

Was shooting in a supermarket the other day. I tried my best to tame the noise from the dozen or so fridges or freezers. Some of them are semi-broken and rattle. I put some blankets, hoping it might reduca the noise at least a bit. I try to get the store guy to help me, but he says an alarm will go of in their headquarters when the temperature rises above a certain threshold. Even though they had initially told me that they could turn everything off on a per take basis.

But they can’t really. Producer, director, dop, everyone tells me it’s fine they‘ll be able to filter that (they wanted to air this three days later).

Next day they come back to me, and literally said „We can hear a lot of noise from the freezers. Couldn’t you do anything about that?“ ?!!??? Wtf? It‘s like there were two different sets of people there

I did 5+ years of (in store during biz hours) supermarket TVC's so hear your pain.

These days I just mention it's usable but you'll still need Izotope RX to fix it.

It's always surprising how many on set are audio pro's when you have a location issue and mention it. Try telling the DOP how to use his/her lamps..

  11. AFMY is correct, the best way to learn about your new kit is to sit down and spend a day or so playing with it.

I spent 2 days with my new field recorder last year trying all options before using it on a job!

When my kids were younger I laved them up and let them run around while checking signal flow dynamics from my new radios more than once..

I am newer..... and have a SD633 and ursa Pro.  I have heard of AES but can someone tell me the benefit of using AES?

The theory is less a/d & d/a conversions will give you a cleaner sound as you're basically outputting (cloning) a digital signal from your mixer straight into another device.

Did they say no to lavs because of the budget?
I can't remember the last shoot I did without lavs :-/

I could get everything on the boom,

No need to use lavs and it saved time,

We were at the final dress rehearsal grabbing people to talk too when possible.

100% the DPA 4017? No lavs?
Impressed then on the reach in a couple of those shots, very nice.

What about the performances on the stage?

Everything was the DPA 4017, no lavs.

That's what impressed me too when using it, the 'reach' of the mic, even slightly off axis was fine.

@engaudio used to be using a SQN in front of a F8 until he upgraded to a Sonosax, I think he has his SQN for sale now if you're interested.

Sure did and yes, it's currently for sale.

I received several glowing reports from post on the timbre of my tracks. (SQNmini-F8)

One US based post mixer said it was the most natural sounding audio he'd ever mixed on his current production. (HHI)

These days I just use my SXR4+, hope he's happy with that..

However, one of the biggest issues I see with it is the lack of outputs. It has one line out and a multi pin AES output. While I think it’s awesome to have aes outputs, many things we use don’t have digital inputs. For the jobs I do, I need to be able to easily send to camera, comtek, sometimes a boom ifb and route different things on them. I think they make a cable ($) for a special 7 pin xlr connector you can have installed on the side ($$$) to get direct analog outs, but that’s a lot to go through for such a basic thing. Maybe others have figured out better and easier ways to do this or I’m missing something. I’d love to be wrong.

    You're very wrong..

On the recorder the optional 7XLR is for the sennheiser ambeo mic input

    The 5XLR is switchable: 2xAES/2xbalanced out/4xunbalanced out

    There's a ta3 (2 channel balanced) analogue out

Plus a switchable in or out AES

All this is covered on the Sonosax site. https://www.sonosax.ch/product/sx-r4p/

You have to think of the recorder as a matrix mixer as there's no such thing as a main L/R out, any input/track/mix/aux/etc.. can be assigned to an output.

If you have any questions ask away, I've been using a Sonosax SXR4+ for the past year as my main recorder.

    Here's what it sounds like. int: mkh50  ext: sanken CS-1 & mkh50.

  17. I have a Nagra SD and it sounds wonderful, not cheap but I highly recommend it. I used one with my SQNmini mixer (via the unbalanced line out) for a long time and was always very happy with the results. (never used the optional clip on mics so can't comment on them but the line/mic inputs sounds great)

Here's a doco I worked on using the above combo.
