I would like to have a wired lav for my smartphone. Something durable. Is the smartlav+ a good choice.
Not sure if the Countryman b3/b6 would work with a smartphone.
This is for if I am out and about and just need to record someones voice, I can pull out my phone and lav.
It is my understanding that you cannot use a b3/b6 or other professional quality lav's for this purpose without power. Testing a b6 with an emuel xlr adapter right now and it wont work without phantom engaged.

One tip i picked up in is not just the tip! Multiple tips! for your solder station a few different sized tips are also a bonus for different sized cables and connectors. One that is good for xlr connectors may not be best for ta3 connectors, etc.

Genius! This is a shining example of how helpful jw sound is. Making a call on monday.

Dont know if this is what you are looking for, but a few of these around ea side of the lcd readout?

I've found some third party Lemo-compatible screw-on type connectors that I much prefer over the actual Lemo version.
They use a tightening collar strain relief (that can be reused) rather than the crimp style that Lemo screw-ons have. Picture a strain relief more like what Neutrik XLRs use.
These are easier to both wire and assemble and can be reused. One caution is that if you're removing a previous cable, be very careful not to pry the tiny strain relief "fingers" out too far (in order to release the old cable), as they can break.
These connectors seem to screw on and off the Zaxcom transmitters easier than the actual Lemos.
...Oh, and they cost less, too.
I stumbled onto a few some time back and then searched for months to find a source for them -- to finally discover they are readily available via our regular suppliers, if only you know what to ask for and where to tell the dealer to source them from.
...Gotta dash to a gig -- more later if anyone's interested.
John that is great insight. I would love to know what to ask for as i am returning the 3 i have to exchange for push/ pulls at the moment. Would love to try these even if i need to get them from a different source.

After 5 months of using push pull I am very happy. Only 1 out of 7 failed but I think it was because I did not do a good job wiring it...
Hello Rado, i am about to wire my first lemo for zaxcom transmitters. I ordered 3 from a usual suspect. 3 screw-on/crimp versions arrived today. I too like to repair my own stuff when the need arrises and i am a sucker for strain relief connectors over crimp types in most cases. While i am always one for sexy looking smaller footprint connectors, a lav is where long term durability trumps in my eyes. I am contemplating sending these back in exchange for the other versions you mention above. How have your version of connectors held up to this point? I just know what a hard time i had with red tc lemos and those at least had the strain relief collar inside. I fear the reaper on these connectors i have in front of me... Hot damn are they expensive for me to screw up!

Especially if you decide to go with the 8 pin Neutricon connectors. Although I prefer using the barrel of a soldering iron to enlarge the connector nut opening of the Neutricon.
Brilliant!

Sorry to pile on. On a shoot with a dragon today. Same problem with a qrx235 - 23.98 at the camera and transmitting 23.98 from the bag. had to cross jam via 29.97 at the qrx to get the tc to light up and all good now. Did a workflow test on a straight up epic on saturday and it worked perfect at 23.98 all the way through.

Since you only need three cores, you cut away one core from the Mogami at the connector ends and now you've got a more flexible snake
Plus take a drill to the connector nut to open it up a bit. Easy fix

some of my clients want this too, actually spoke to the women who was doing the transcribing and had her download Sound Devices beta wav agent! She is forever indebted to me and I have been getting more work with this company as a result!
I was tickled when a client of mine for a sports feature told me she had wav agent on her laptop so she could transcribe on the plane. She told me she didnt fully understand it all but liked the workflow someone else turned her onto. Will keep the wav agent suggestion in my back pocket for sure.

A couple of XLR/XLR barrel line to mic level variable pads in your kit is always a good thing to have.
Agreed! Need some ta3 and ta5 versions as well

I thought the epic/Scarlett could take line level.. I used a QRX straight into the 3.5mm with a custom cable on a movie last year and it worked. No attenuater.
Was this red by chance equipped with a pro i/o module? I recall something in the manual referring to that being the only way mic/line is an option. According to my test with my current pad calculations, i was already near the bottom of the slider scale just to get -20 ref on the meters. Had i been feeing full line level i estimate i would have been over full scale 0dB. No red i have worked with thus far is equiped with more than a wooden camera adapter kit which is still mic level inputs AFAIK. I prefer to bypass extra connectors and adapters to help eliminate bulk when possible.

Wanted to use my camera link kit with a client I do a lot of work with who owns a Red Epic. A few days ago, I built output cables for use with an Epic or Scarlet. I completed the cables, and later was in a panic when it hit me that my QRX was line level output only. Silly me as I knew this already having RTFM'ed quite a bit, but blocked that factoid out for some reason. Glad it hit me now and not standing next to the camera on set. This was my project from this morning in preparation for a job next Monday/Tuesday.
I cut the previously made cables (yikes) 6" down from the ta5f connectors. used scrap ta3 connector parts for a strain relief of sorts, as well as scrap ta5f connector boots to build a make-shift in-line cable case (I tried looking for one of these "in-line cases" online but had no idea what they were called to even find them, so i decided to get crafty). soldered H style pads for balanced cables based on info from this link and this calculator link below:
http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/line_to_mic.html
http://www.grahambrock.com/thpad.htm
Just got back from the local camera dept, tested complete camera link on a red epic and all was a success. was able to feed proper level audio to both channels, while also sending timecode and receiving return from camera. Dolphins were doing backflips in my head when i saw it all work. Thought maybe this will help others with some ideas of there own in a similar situation. So many mic level possibilities!

I agree, but in cases like that fire breathing red dragon, its the only way so far ive been able to get the happy green tc with an erx. I believe cross jamming could help with erx's or any sync boxes where cameras have problems accepting them. If your recorder and camera are both set to match tc rates like 23.98 for example, cross jam the box for the camera to 29.97 and see if you get success.Ken

NFL can have their own workflow, they are sort of an island universe. On normal jobs, anymore, it is expected that all TC + frame rates will match.

Hi Tom,
yes, set the ACL204 to manual/ once when working with a bidirectional cable and set the Alexa to regenerate. Only in this mode the cam will continously take the external time code and not jam once and continou counting up with the internal generator.
Btw. the ALEX does not own a sync input but syncs internally to the incoming tc rythm. (If set to regenerate mode)
Best
Timo
Off topic and maybe i am way off in general - does this issue have anything to do with the alexa issues with erx's mentioned in other threads? Is this possibly a similar fix? I realize tho the wrx and acl's are different beasts

osa: " Curious to know... "
I just answered this for Jack in another thread...
Saw that and was going to tie it back to this one! You beat me to it. All makes sense to me. Will keep on truckin with the cross jam...

Curious to know if anyone is still creating linear timecode MP3s and sending them to transcription houses? Had request for them yesterday – the ones with timecode on channel 1 and audio on channel 2 etc., but I haven't made them in a long long time. I made two versions of mp3's simultaneously just in case and am waiting to hear back if that's what they actually needed. Just curious if transcription houses even want those types of files anymore. This is one of those situations if I don't hear back from the client then I will have my answer to this question.

Curious to know if transmitting 23.98, 29.97 at the erx and driving the dragon set at 23.98 is a valid work around? Burned clips with a slate to check. I still cant get an editor to confirm this for me unfortunately. But this has been the only way i have been able to get the green tc to light up. To the naked eye it appears to be i sync at full seconds. I called zaxcom to discuss this a while back and at the time it was believed to be the case but yet to be proven. I am going with it in the meantime because it appeared to work on several jobs thus far

Hi Ken, Yes you're right, some lens set-ups are tight that way, and you've got a good suggestion for improvement. I do like to gloat that I can make cable for $20 that works as well as the expensive cables that Red sells. DS

That is a great point!

Here's a photo of my Epic audio input cable I made for about $20 in parts and an hour of labor. Works reliably for me. The key is to wire the mini-plugs as balanced TRS connections: Tip to XLR 2, Ring to XLR 3, Sleeve to XLR 1
Settings: go to Epic Settings menu / Channel 1/2 , choose Cam Analog, CH 1 Balanced, Ch 2 Balanced
This is a mic level input. You will need to find the Settings screen for adjusting the Pre-Amp input to set your tone -- oh and while you're there, find the headphone screen and adjust the headphone level for the return.
I find these Red Epic menus confusing , so I like to have to the camera assistant there in case I get lost.
and be sure 48 volt power is off.
If i may suggest - neutrik right angle 1/8" trs connectors at the red. After 1 shoot with my straight cables i made up i learned quick that various focus pullers and lense accessories leave very little room for connectors and cabling to stick out. On one particular setup the focus pullers teeth were barely making contact but just enough to get by. The next day with right angles worked perfect.

I'm sure you know that the Neutrik R/A XLR connectors can be rotated in the shell from 12 to 6 o'clock positions.
Eric
correct. just want to make my own if i can for less connector bulk. since this will be a cable specifically for the alexa and no other camera i want to customize it for best fit. i am making a cable for a zaxcom qrx.

I know i am late to the party but i am in love with the possibilities of this mixer. I cant stop dreaming about it over the last couple days. The idea mentioned about qrx outputs split feeding this mini and a recorder simultaneously was someting that never occured to me. Sheer genius all around. Loved reading this thread and seeing it go from pit to plate!
