  1. My usual supplier doesn't stock the right angled BNC plugs so I rather stubbornly made my own.

I have a few folks using these in the field right now, hopefully the slightly smaller size will be agreeable.

    S.

WOW i am blown away by these. Cant get any more compact. Those are some sexy bnc cables!

  2. I agree with Prahlad. Would fill a gap in the product lineup to have a hot-shoe appropriate size Zax digital ENG receiver. Maybe the size of an ERX or the TRX900CL. Internal powering, single receiver (which could still do stereo), analog or digital 2 channel output, diversity reception, all metal housing. TC output maybe (viaTC over UHF which is now possible with Zax).

    A mini RX900S basically.

Someone is now typing "just use the ERX, duh" but sometimes you need the RF reliability of UHF and full quality 2-ch mix. Mounting and powering a QRX on a full-size camera is no problem, but can be a real challenge or a no-go on smaller cameras.

I do agree with you, and a CL sized receiver would be awesome, BUT, i used to do what the qrx235 does with a sr and 2x sennheiser g2 transmitters for timecode and return at the camera. A poor house version of this camera link/qrx/qifb system. Quite a bulky rig plus no fancy zaxnet features. This qrx235 compared to that is an unbelievably huge upgrade in a much smaller footprint even with the external battery mount. All the zaxcom features are a huge added bonus. I had a rather bulky and clunky previous setup as a point of reference so that might explain my "wow this setup is so kickass" point of view. Derek what you are suggesting will come in time i am sure. BTW glenn how can i sign up to become a possible beta tester when it does??

  3. I've come across quite a few bigger ENG style cameras where the Hirose 4-pin power out doesn't work. All the more reason to carry backup batteries no matter what camera rig you are expecting.

Good point this particular varicam today does not spit power out hirose port but now that you mention i wonder if possibly might be a menu setting. Will explore this when i get a chance.

  4. I have quite a bit of power and mounting options on hand. A hirose, d-tap, np1 cup as well as battery sled all wired for zaxcom. Plus 2x saddles, hot show plates, articulating arms, and a stash of industrial velcro. Prob still more stuff i need to get that i am not thinking of.

Forgot about anton bauer plate as well, which i use when mount option is available. As in tis case a mount was NOT available. Used a dual saddle bag that i modified to show side meters. Hoping to have my wife stitch up to clean up edges. Power is taken from anton plate. Allows easy swap of camera batteries without tangled in the rig. Posted this pic from today as i believe someone was wanting to see mounting option examples.

  5. I'm using the hirose out on the XDCAM's on my current job to power my QRX. Works fine.

  6. man...

heres a vote for a new zaxcom camera receiver to go with the beautiful camera link

the qrx's are to big without a really beautiful battery option. to big, I shoot with a few news guys here and they wouldn't let me put the qrx100's + battery anywhere near their movi steady rigs.

They handed me a sennheiser g3 instead. I hate the sound those things get (especially when it's straight to the station), so really made me want a smaller battery capable zaxcom camera receiver.

if anyone can pull it off it's zaxcom, my old lectrosonics were about the same size but at least they had a 9v option, makes a big difference.

I have found with steady cam or various camera rigs, If you build/buy an extension cable of some sort to the camera you can put the receiver just about anywhere and it keeps camera people happy. Over the shoulder bags, clip to their belt, etc. I've seen people post here using np1's that way. But yeah also if there handing you a G3 then an erx would work too.

  7. Thanks John for posting your results. Very interesting.

The only testing I did was run it for a couple hours in a driving scene where my zaxnet couldn't reach, and it didn't hold sync, so I just decided I have to stay within range most the time.

I have been extremely happy with the performance of my erx system, and haven't used my lockit box once since switching over.

same here, i keep my denecke's in my kit just in case but have not used them since i first purchased erx's. they seem to do the job for the type of work i do, but i always keep other options handy.

  8. A Denecke Master Clock will compare incoming time code to its internal generator and display any offset to the nearest 1/100th of a frame.

I meant to include that following (which I'll add to the above):

My test setup utilized time code generated by a Denecke Master Clock feeding a Deva V which, in turn, fed an IFB100.  At the start point of the test, power was removed from the IFB100 and the offset of each unit -- compared to the Denecke Master Clock -- was noted.  The offset ranged from -.06 to -.07.

great info, john. thanks for your tests and posting your findings.

  9. That information isn't published. The information that is published is that the ERX will hold timecode when out of wireless range, so I was acting on the information available to me.

Same here - wasnt until this discussion that i realized that 1 frame every 6 hours was only when drivin by camera link or similar, and its that clock once jammed stays locked within 1 frame every 6 hours - if i have that correct. Glad this was all discussed, all good to know

  10. updated my power rig today with an LED voltage read. kind of clunky but i need glasses anyways so i can see it good from a distance. smallest i could find so far, but would love to know if anyone has a smaller solution for LED voltage reader. i originally was going to put a momentary switch on the side but i am going to ride this out seeing voltage full time and see how it works out. i can just look over at camera for batt status even from a good distance instead of running over to hit a switch. seems to draw very little power to make any impact when on constant display. LED color matches the casing at least. i wired it to read actual battery voltage so when it gets down to 6.75 i have about 15 minutes to change out batts. work in progress...

  11. Has anyone come up with a solution for this by chance? Lately Using a 633 Cabled to camera and Using a zax camera link's ifb feed with erx's. Several times been asked to feed camera playback audio to erx's and my only answer was to throw my qrx235 on the camera quickly and turn off my camera link transmitter to quickly switch over the erx audio feeds to be from camera via the qrx. Overkill for what seems like a simple request. Was thinking of a Y cable split from my camera return cable and feeding channel 6 and potting that ch up durring playback potting other channels down. Is there any other option besides this, especially if i need ch 6 for other things?

  12. Thanks for the replys. I don't think zaxcom would like to hear that " does not hold sync for too long"... I'm surprised. Is that real world experience?

In my experience it holds well over time without rejamming, but drops completely when batts go. Less than 1 frame in 6 hours possible drift i believe are the official specs

Dont know that a headphone jack can be reset to an input by firmware alone, IMHO.

  13. So far this is the best case and headphone combo i have found for the erx that withstands client abuse. Might help with erx headphone connector damage I hear folks having to deal with:

    - Sony MDR-210 Headphones - bought these and cut them 2' from connector to cut back cable slack

    - added Neutrik 1/8" stereo right angle connector

    - Body Glove EZ View LARGE smartphone case (I ordered 10 online, 4 of which were LARGE and 6 were MEDIUM. the larger size allows better protection and full screen view. request LARGE if possible).

The headphone cable length seems to be perfect for belt clip and handheld listening with minimal cable snag. The right angle connector combined with the case gives 2 points of strain relief when clients drop it. Because dropping is inevitable. Clients always feel better when they can listen and look the part simultaneously. win/win.

  14. In the past with erx's and dragons it has worked when i feed the erx 23.98, the camera is set to 23.98, but i set the erx to 29.97 and sync was perfect everytime. Slate at 23.98. According to zaxcom conversation, we both were pretty confident sync was taking place at the whole second. No offical test with edit done on my part yet to prove that. And i realize too this is just a workaround for the time being until zaxcom makes their update avail. Is there something wrong w my current method? Editors havent come back to me w sync issues so far.
