  1. I love it when people describe my job to me.
  2. Asking a friend to do you a solid is one thing. Asking a total stranger...
  3. They probably had "proper" equipment. Technology was very different in that time. And even if it wasn't, I'd argue that the level of processing you put the sound through is an important distinction the same as the level of color correction you imply. Some directors are happy with very raw unprocessed elements.
  4. In the US of A, we are typically paid a rate for services rendered. If the film does well, we get bragging rights but no financial kickback.
  5. Is it wrong that I am more annoyed that they misspelled Comteks than anything else in there? Good luck finding someone with that equipment and enough experience who'd do it for less than double that not including the cost of a boom op.
  6. I know. Next they'll be asking sound mixers for a reel.
  7. I made one when I bought my Nomad. Not terribly great with the soldering iron, but it's not that difficult make. Certainly was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy less than thirty bucks.
  8. I am always amused when their counter offer is half of what you offer. I mean, who the hell thinks anyone would bite? I suppose if you've dried up the well and there's an eviction notice in your future, but otherwise why would anyone assume that a 50 percent counteroffer is remotely enticing?
  9. I worry when I see a major Network offering such rates. Wouldn't be surprised if someone was pocketing the difference.
  10. That's 450 all in per 14 hour day, not including expendables. A 14 hour day is not standard in any project, union or otherwise. Generally with clients who ask for things like that, you're not gonna be able to negotiate up to a more reasonable rate, since more reasonable is more than double their offer. Give them a counter offer and expect them not to bite is what I would do.
  11. I too ordered an X-Mini a while back. Saweeet.
  12. As the Senator would say to this one, serial abuser. All red flags bolded for effect. "Shooting Feature Film (Our 5th One) Starting this Sun, Apr. 7th Still Need The Following: Hair & Make Up Person - (at least good ability with Make Up) Location Scout and/or Upscale Apt... (no studio apt) Also.... Possible "Sound Person" for on set & location recording as well. Very Low Budget - But Some Pay - Plus, Subway/Bus Money, Plus, Food - Plus Credit - Plus Copy Of Film" Why is sound person in quotes?
  13. Senator, I ain't touching that job! That's why I posted it here!
  14. Not sure how I feel about this one. "I'm looking for a sound guy who has experience recording dialogue scenes at Grand Central. It's a one day shoot next Sunday (twelve hours) and pays $400 but you need to have your own gear including at least 4 lavs. Please send details of your experience with this location and any sound samples that you've recorded there. CANDIDATES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION." Now the pay is better than your average Craigslist advertisement, but I had to raise my eyebrows and post it here because of that second paragraph.
  15. What you are doing is probably the best way to do it. At 300 bucks, you can't expect much. I'd say upgrade to one of Tascams recorders in the price range. I forget the model, but it does accept line level. It'll probably sound a bit better.
  16. Olle, I hope the makers of the ZenCam are ready to hear from the Senator's lawyers!
  17. You've done everything I would have done. You've offered alternatives, you've stated your concerns which are the same as anyone else would have, and they've ignored you. Honestly, it sounds like they are trying to bully you into complacency. If they can't understand that you, the sound expert, can't get what they want but have alternatives that would work somewhat (get them clean tc stamped audio at least) and refuse to listen to the dude they hired because you know more about that job than they do, then it might be time to walk away.
