  1. Canare makes a very durable and rugged starquad duplex pair cable that I've been using for years. Highly reccomended. Eric
  2. Regardless of whether it's film or video -20dbfs seems to be the defacto standard for tone level in the digital world. Eric
  3. I'm probably the guy in the audio business the longest on this group. Been involved in audio since 1957 as a hobby. Got started professionally in 1962 with a radio station in NY. Then moved on to various recording studios in NY working on Ampex decks with razor blades & splicing tape. Great fun back then doing 24 mics to one track mixes on an Ampex 300. Then on to production companys in both NY & Chicago as production sound mixer & technical director. In S. Florida for the past 10 years. Most of the work is spots & video talking heads. I turn down any work that requires me to walk & carry equipment. Spare time & passion is competitive trapshooting. If I should win the $82,000,000 Florida lottery tonight, this will be my last post here.;-)))) Eric
  4. I think ORTF is a strange format for TV post to work with. XY and MS are most likely more familiar for them and fits into their setups easier. Many shows are finished in stereo and the major networks do broadcast stereo but not all cable outlets broadcast in stereo. The Bravo channel is one of them. Eric
  5. You could also use a wireless lav mic mounted on the sun visor between the driver & passenger. Eric
  6. The street prices for the 702 & 702t are $1850 & $2375 respectively. Eric
  7. The RAMPS party at NAB will be at "Fireflys On Paradise" Tuesday night April 25 starting about 6:30pm. It's $20 in the hat to cover tapas food and sangria. Fireflys is on Paradise Blvd about a 20 minute walk from the LVCC. Eric
  8. Perhaps it is but for the spot jobs that I do they only require 1 or 2 tracks at most and for that my Portadats are still the medium of choice. When you've learned your skill set as I did sitting at a 20 input console going into a mono Ampex it's kind of hard to give up the old habits. Eric
  9. Not speaking for Jeff but yes most mixers have their favorite boom swinger that knows their gear and the way they work. Boom swingers usually use the mixers gear. Eric
  10. If the Metacorder requires a laptop to run it then go with the 744t. It's designed to take the abuse of bag & cart use. 4 tracks should be enough for most jobs. Remember, at one time there was only 1 track. That's why it's called "mixing." Eric
  11. Put any of the "Nagra" size machines (Deva, HHb, Fostex pd6, Cantar) on a cart and it looks like it belongs there. Put a 744t there and it looks like a toy. Eric
  12. One of my favourites, "well we don't have a big budget for this project, but listen......(voice usually drops a little in volume to add drama) I've got this other one coming up, and it's a much better budget and I can get you on it, if you can do this one for me at the ridiculously low rate I'm asking of you !"<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The perfect answer is; "Tell you what, you pay me my rate for this job and I'll give you a discount on the the big budget job" Eric
  13. Most likely not. The B6 requires a special wired supply. Countryman offers supplies wired just for the B6, about $170. Eric
  14. You can start by asking $550 for 10 hrs plus gear rental of $350 per day. You probably won't get it but it is a starting point to negotiate from. It works like this, they'll offer $50 a day and you want $900, somewhere between the two is a number you both can live with, stand firm in that the number will be closer to your number than theirs. Eric
  15. Saturday night and no Wexler forum? How does one cope cope with the withdrawl problems?;-((((( Eric
  16. Your tax preparer accountant should be able itemize the parkng fees as reimbursed expenses along with any other expenses you were reimbursed for. You should not have to pay tax on any of that. Keep the reciepts just in case. Eric
  17. I used an AT835st on a job a week or two ago. Strange mic, you get more low end when the hp filter is on. Output is a bit low but not bad. I used it in the x/y wide position which works well beyond about 30ft from the mic. Anything closer and there's a hole in the middle and you should switch to the x/y narrow setting. It also has an m/s setting. Overall for outside efx it's not too shabby. Eric
  18. No his phones are not on backwards. When that pix was taken there was no stereo only mono. In fact I remember when we used oxen to pull the tape across the heads. Actually it was one ox for mono & two for stereo. Eric
  19. All of that screaming & yelling for 75 cents an hour? That's a Mc Donalds or Wal Mart type raise. Eric
  20. I've internally cabled all 5 of my poles with straight cable. I use Canare L 2E5 a very thin 1 pair + shield. The head end is tied off with 12" for mic connection, the total length is the max pole length plus 5 ft extra. So for a 16ft pole it would be 21ft of cable. All the cables exit from the pole base. I've added a 3/4" long leg on the bottom for the pole to rest when needed to protect the cable. Eric
  21. The K-Tek mounts are very good in supressing handling noise. For fast swings across a shot I've found that the "Fat Cat" from Remote Audio does a great job in cutting down any "swoosh" sounds. One of these days I'm going to build a prototype of my boom op's head gear. A hat with a built in oar lock type of mount on top to support the pole so you can swing it with one hand. Might even make it so it could clamp on to the top of the headphone band. Eric
