  1. ProTools 10 for sure. Upgrade the internal drive to an SSD, or just get a small portable FW800 for your PT Sessions.. More RAm for sure.. I've got 16gigs in my 2 year old MBpro 15.. PTools screams on it Then again.. So does Logic..but doing Post in Logic is like death.
  2. Just got back from NAMM...the brain is spinning about having an Apogee D/A available for an iPad... The Duet is a nice little box nonetheless... http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/duet.php
  3. newbie guilt Rode NTG3, Rode NTG4 Stereo AKG Blue Line with 3 Capsules AT 1821 soooooo need a CS3e...sigh
  4. just to be clear..these 3.5mm inputs labled Mic 1 and Mic 2 are still MONO inputs (just have a choice of balance or unbalanced). Correct? A client wants to potentially just put a new Rode Stereo Video Mic Pro on this camera.. Would love to give him proper advice.. Thanks
  5. it looks really amazing..but I need to replace my 5 year old Mac Book Pro first..and the new Quad Core i7 Chips in the new laptops are INSANE.
  6. you crack me up And I just ordered a x2XLR-5Pin cable. just cuz.
  7. fwiw..Kenneth at TrewAudio has been great to me..advice, pricing, etc.
  8. Adam..as someone who also recently just put together a basic 'starter' package, don't forgot to think about all the 'extras'. Cables, adapters, gear bags/harness, cases, even a small cart of some kind (Like a Rok N Roller with shelf). Try and imagine as many 'what if' scenarios as you can (which NO DOUBT you'll forget something and get bit in the ass a few times). Talk to the people doing your post production (that's my main world). Try to get as much fore-knowledge on the POST side of it as possible and try and anticipate their needs as well. Anticipate how you may need to do a backup of your recordings (like a small mp3 recorder in the bag). I ended up with a 302 mixer, 702T recorder, 416 shotgun, a 2ch. Audio Technica Lav system, and an AKG BlueLine mic with a few different capsules (it ain't a Schoeps, but it sounds pretty amazing). My budget was less than half of yours, sadly. So I didn't get the Schoeps systems or Lav's that I wanted..but am surely saving my pennies. I ended up buying a Deneke Slate/sync box.. In retrospect, for the few times I've needed them, I should have just rented them and bought the better mics first. Lesson learned. And, frankly, for what I'm doing, my gear sounds fine, and I can rent/borrow a Schoeps or other mics if I need it. But frankly and honeslty, any gigs that come to me that need better/more gear, or exceed my skills at this stage, I'm glad to be able to refer those clients to the A-list guys in town and hopefully pick up an A2 gig along the way.
  9. me and my greyhound girls and a bunch of video.
  10. can't go wrong with the Portabrace bags: http://www.portabrace.com/productC-PB-CSBAST and these Aerostitch Motorcycle bags are really nice and soft for protecting gear..not as padded, but nice: http://www.aerostich.com/packing-it-in/more-packing-options/small-storage-accessories/aerostich-fleece-bags.html
  11. Well..I've got a 100 gig Boot Camp Partition running on my MacBook Pro for Quicken and the like, and it's working fine with Windows 7. BWF Widget Pro works just fine on that rig (just a few workflow things you need to know) , and the transcriptionist I used was happy. Might be worth looking into until someone jumps on and makes a Mac program (helllooooo Sound Devices.....). Pretty sure most everyone here would cough up the $100 for a killer program. At least I would
  12. absolutely, without at doubt. BRILLIANT sound-design and mix. The Incredibles is a close 2nd, for sure. I wish more BluRay/DVD's would let you listen to just the sound tracks. Last one I saw that did it was Monsters Inc. You could kill the dialog and music and just listen to the sfx stems. Simply brilliant work.
  13. Zack..I scoured all over to try and find a Mac based program that's comparable to the BWF-Convert..nothing exists..Even the Sound Devices Wave Agent won't. I wonder if it's a Lame MP3 Licensing issue... That cable from Turner Audio looks pretty cool tho!
  14. ahh..thanks for the heads up. I should have clarified that I was specifically referring to ProTools not playing nice with the h264 files during audio post, and, at least on the Mac side that I've seen, the 422 ProRes Proxy files I usually get from Final Cut seem to work great.
  15. the problem with h264 in editing is that it's an insanely processor intensive codec. ProTools simply will NOT work with it and keep sync of any kind..even on my 8 Core monster tower. I always get 422 ProRes Proxy files for audio post. Since I'm a newbie, I asked the guys at Juiced Link for some advice when sending from my 702T to the JL231 to the 5D'..so this is what I did... "The typical setting on the 5D is to manually throttle back its gain all the way (1 click above off), then adjust the CX231 to the peaks are splashing just past -12dBFS on the 5D meter."
  16. Hmmm..I wonder if I got a bad batch of batteries...I used the Juiced Link 231 (no phantom power..just a single line out of the 702T)...it died after 8 hours. Took me a little time to resync the last 8 clips of the shoot in ProTools, but that's what slates are for. I learn fast I'm lucky that most of the people here using PluralEyes KNOW to not use the 5D audio for anything but a scratch track to line stuff up. I'm glad to be the post guy hmm..that BeachTek box looks great. Love the meters....hmmm..
  17. fwiw.. the BWFWidget-Pro software works just fine on Windows 7 on the BootCamp partion of my MacBook Pro (running 10.6.5). Gotta do a little tweak to make sure you run it as an Adminsitrator...but it did fine on embedding the metadata into the MP3's and creating a sound report. I really like the Wave Agent program. I hope they can add and Embedded MP3 Batch option into it.
  18. well...maybe...but, considering I'm not as experienced in this field as the other location people they're used to using, they may have assumed (rightly, imvho) that I would know about the transcription needs/workflow. I consider it a lesson learned without any great damage to me, no loss to the client (MOST importantly), and more education opportunity for me. Lordy knows in my years as a post-engineer/composer/sound designer, I've had my share of sessions that started out with the 'Oh...we forgot to mention that in pre-pro, didn't we...sorry". and..this shoot taught me just how long a 9V in a Juiced Link 231 to a 5D can last. D'OH. Damn glad we slated every take, jammed to the 702T, and that I record not only to the internal CF card, but to an External FW drive. Easy hour in ProTools to line my audio back up to the source video, delete the bad audio file, layin the new synced audio, and layback to a new video file. Quicktime 7 rocks for doing a simple replacement of an audio file within a QT movie WITHOUT having to rerender video. I'm a fast learner
  19. Very nice...Thank you.. I'm surprised I haven't heard of that. I'm a big fan of Izotope plugins. Use a lot of them. Will download the demo and see what I can make it do!. If I'm not using ProTools or Logic for conversions, I use a cool little shareware app called Sound Converter...Simple, fast, and good.. But doesn't transfer over the TC embedded MetaDate from a BWF to Mp3 http://dekorte.com/projects/shareware/SoundConverter/ Grazie!!
  20. you may also want to check out Music Pro Insurance: https://www.musicproinsurance.com./default.aspx They cover my whole onsite post studio, my field gear anywhere I take it, my piano, etc... Now..I've never filed a claim, so I can't attest to that side of their service, but the rates are quite reasonable.
  21. Most of us post-guys sleep while you guys are on the stage recording then again..we sometimes sleep while the producer is making the VO talent do 35 takes of the same VO line... "yeah..uhm..you said 'THe...could you maybe say 'ThE' with 10% more yellow in your tone?" yup..I agree with everything all of you have said. MUST sleep.
  22. thanks for the reply... I must be missing something really obvious..I've read thru the PDF twice now...can't find any kind of 'batch convert' function. The 'Copy To' doesn't bring up any conversion windows. uhm..help, por favor?
  23. I'd love to expand on this discussion and ask for some newbie advice... Using a 302 and 702T for now til I can afford the bigger recorder. I recently recorded about 75 audio files...single boom mic. Used 24 hr Time of Day as my TC base on the 702T.... jammed from the 702 to my SB-T box for the RED, and to the TS-C slate. Everyone happy I sent the 302 l/r out to a RED camera, and one channel of TA3 out of the 702 to a Juiced Link 231 for one of the 5D cameras (the other 5D just captured nat sound from its camera mic).. The transcription issue just came up when I got home. My bad for not doing a proper PrePro. So now I have WAV files with the proper TC metadata...but I hate sending 15 gigs of files to the transcriptionist (even tho she said it was ok...bless her heart). so..two inquiries: 1- I've yet to find a Mac based program that can convert the WAV's to MP3 (or maybe something else for her???) and keep the TC metadata intact. Anyone know of one? I saw BFW-Widget Pro (http://www.bwfwidget.com/html/bwf-widget-pro.html)..but it's PC Only and hasn't been updated for a year or so. (I do have a BootCamp partition with Windows 7 on my laptop so I could try and see if it works....) 2- The thought of recording TC to one of the channels...uhm..nope...didn't think of that. Lesson learned. Need to develop a workflow for this and would love thoughts. I do have a Sony D50 handheld that could be tossed into the fray. Thanks!
  24. Exactly. I'm all for just 'understanding' whatever I can. If it's something that's old and dead, I'll learn that pretty quickly. Some people still use TC DAT machines I think I actually found this board doing a Bing Search on 'tri level sync' and read a bunch of posts on a thread here. Quite informative. As an audio post-engineer, I always want to know what's going on from the video people. Things change FAST. New cameras, new formats. I've run into camera ops that know a LOT about audio, and I love that. And have met some that want the audio guy to know as much about their cameras and the video side of it. All knowledge is a good thing. My favorite quote is from one of my favorite FCP editors when I was hired to be the on-site Audio Post guy at their studio: "Just because your dentist has scissors, doesn't mean you want him to cut your hair'.
