  1. I have been reading recently in TV Technology some articles or letters from people who are experiencing EMI interference from the new LED light bulbs that are starting to appear at Home Depot and other Hardware stores and lightning supply stores. These bulbs they tested emitted enough radiation out of the Bulb and associated wiring to knock ATSC channel 10 off the air in the vicinity of several hundred feet.. Frequencies in the 400 to 600 Mhz range were found to be emitted from the switching power supply contained in these bulbs. Has anyone noticed this interference reducing Wireless Mic sensitivity in production situations where we are seeing more and more LED fixtures showing up? Larry Fisher. Have you done any testing with spectrum analyzer to see if this will be an increasing problem in the future with more and more of these "dimmable" LED lamps being used in buildings or on sets? I just noticed all the streetlights in my neighborhood have been replaced with LED based lamps. Will this add to the noise floor of the VHF spectrum? Apparently Part 15 FCC approval is really not policed and is really granted without testing on the honor system.
  2. For these Mono files recorded on different Recorders to be assembled into a Poly file they must all start at the same frame. and or sample. Not sure that happens when using multiple Zaxcom recording Wireless. All the programs that batch convert BWF Mono into Poly files don't sync them up by time code they just interleave them from the starting sample to the end sample.
  3. You left out JVC with their new 4K Camera under $5000. http://gizmodo.com/5875213/hands-on-with-jvcs-4k-video-camera-it-wont-break-your-back-or-your-budget
  4. I have one of these and they work great. They also function as HDMI to HDSDI and HDSDI to HDMI converter as well as a DNXHD recorder. The built in Battery will run it for a hour or so. It dosen't convert frame rates or resolution, like the Pix240 but for under $400 it is hard to beat. You do need adaptor pigtails for BNC inputs as the HDSDI inputs and outputs on this device are DIN connectors.
  5. I agree it is probably not a filename issure it is probably a data formatting issue in the iXML chunk. Perhaps they are expecting a different layout than the SD744 Schema. Did you have a chance to look at the iXML metadata chunks on working and non working files? It is probably a problem with the data parsing algorythm in the AVID MC6.
  6. What does the iXML Chunk metadata look like in comparison between the 744 and Cantar? Could be a difference there if the new verison of AVID is pulling metadata first from the iXML and second from the BEXT chunk. As I always have said they should first pull from BEXT then fill any fields from the iXML that arn't already populated by the BEXT metadata. If the data conflicts, use the Bext. Also since this seems to be a MAC version only problem it could be the formatting of the iXML chunk with PC carriage returns and line feeds. The Mac only uses line feed characters. Could be the AVID metadata parser is not taking that into account and is being flumoxed by the extra CR character in the BEXT and iXML chunks.
  7. Sure Fusion may be slightly different from Readyboost in its Apple approved version because the SSD Non-volatile Ram portion of the Disk mapping is not easily removed. Readyboost uses any type of Non Volatile Ram including removeable SD cards or USB thumb drives. which seems very similar to the method you linked to in the Hack of the Apple Fusion to allow it to use externally connected SSD.
  8. They are probaly keeping quiet about the details to keep from being sued. It sounds exactly like "Ready Boost" (Not as cool a name) the Mirosoft Non Volatile Ram speed up found in all versions of Windows since 2006. Or they licensed the technology from Microsoft and don't want that little detail in the press. Apple is good at taking off the shelf technology and putting a Hyperbolic name on it. Like "Power Book" instead of notebook and "FireWire" instead of iLink or IEEE1394 and "Thunderbolt" for lntel Light-peak.. Now "Lightning" for "high speed serial port with power.
  9. That gives new meaning to the term White Elephant. Other than the fact that it was designed by Steve Jobs I don't think its resale value will ever come close to it's cost. This looks like something that is not very seaworthy and probably cost much more than anyone with any sense and lots of money would buy. I hope Steves family likes to sit on a boat in a harbor because that will be about all the thing iwill ever do. Looks a lot like a 1950s tract home on a floating barge.
  10. Apple Booted two of it's top executives today. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-apple-ouster-20121030,0,676001.story Jeff, now's your chance to retire from the sound business and apply for that job you always dreamed of, Executive Vice president of Apple.
  11. Thunderbolt is not much of a solution. Sure it's fast, but It ends up bing a kludge and if you want to add a couple of periferals like large hard drives, capture card, and firewire adaptor Giabit ethernet and an HD monitor you end up having to buy $150 to $200 worth of the Apple proprietary Thunderbolt cables and adapters to daisy chain a bunch of periferals together. Plus you quickly exceed the power handling capacity and end up having to also connect additional power supplies for each periferal. I haven't seen any Thunderbolt Hubs and a lot of periferals like those from BlackMagic Design only have a single port so must be at the end of the chain. All those periferals would easily fit in the PCI express slots of a Tower machine it Apple decides to update them with newer processors. I also wonder about the robustness of the Thunderbolt connector. They are very tiny and have no Locking mechanism. Not even a magnet to hold them in so I wonder what happens to your external HD array when you re-position your laptop and accidentally knock loose the TB cable when the drive is writing data. What's really funny is that Apple used to advertise the first iMac and make fun of all the cables the PC tower used. check this early commercial I worked on. That's my own personal PC in that spot. I do admit that we found the longest wires we could for each periferal to make it look a lot worse. All the PC cables were tangled and clumped. The iMac cables were carefully arranged and coiled. We even ironed the iMac's modem phone line so it would lie flat. Now with the new iMacs and Thunderbolt and Firewire and USB running to all the external "Upgrades" for the iMac, the tables have turned.
  12. Jeff, The single page sign-in works great in both IE9 and Chrome. And it is much faster than that bogus pop-up window I don't see any reason to regret the change. It is faster and returns you to whatever page you were on after sign in. Plus all iE9 users can log in without problems
  13. From the JVC Press Release: Likewise, high end digital motion picture cameras may capture 4K images, but often provide a raw data output to an external storage array for later processing-again due to lack of processing power in the camera. There just hasn't been the ability to capture, process, display and record full 4K images in real time until now. JVC's exclusive Falconbrid LSI processing takes raw image data from the camera's CMOS device and dematrixes (deBayers) it in real time. Unlike many high end 4K cameras, the GY-HMQ10 is able to output 4K images to a monitor or projection system in real time with virtually no latency. This capability opens up applications in cinematography, medical microscopy, telepresence, specialized observation / surveillance, and live wide-view event coverage. Using MPEG-4 technology and a variable bit rate H.264 codec operating at up to 144 Mbps, the GY-HMQ10 records up to two hours of 4K video to economical SDHC or SDXC memory cards. ------------- Although I believe it records to 4 cards simultaneously. and I believe the 2 hour figure is with 4 128 GB SDXC cards. SDHC can be up to 32 GB each
  14. JVC just announced a 4K camcorder that records in real time to 4 on-board standard class 6 SDHC or SDXC cards. It will sell for about $5000 including Zoom lens and Balanced Audio. available in March of 2013. Will also record 2K and standard 1080p HD. http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/jvc-4k-camcorder/
  15. I didn't know about the 3rd party skin. That could very well be where the problem is. Since it could be a GDI incompatibility since that fancy skin uses rounded corners and alpha blending of the modal pop-up box and background dimming. Graphics primitive bugs (screen rendering) are common and very hard to debug since there are a multitude of drivers out there in the Windows world. Did you try removing the skin or Template and see if the log-in problem remains?
  16. The direction Apple is going is for thinner (for no reason) desktops like the new iMacs. Thin and sealed is a bad way to package a high end machine that may be required for fast or real-time video processing. High end Multi GPU video cards have 2 4-inch fans and some even have liquid or water cooling. That kind of hardware will never fit in a laptop with a puny 1" low volume fan or in a thin all in one computer like the iMac that also has to dissipate heat from the High Rez LCD display and quad core CPU.
  17. Well you could roll back to the older version until they come up with a fix for the sign in.. I liked it better anyway. And maybe Safari and Firefox are the major browsers in use on this website because all the people with IE9 as their only installed browser can't sign in to complain. Jeff you should buy a cheap Windows machine (preferably with Windows 7) and use it to check your website/ You can pick them up new for about $275 or even cheaper used. Although I use Windows primarily and have over 20 Windows machines I keep a couple of Macs just to check for compatibility issues with my websites. If they are telling you the new forum software is working fine on all browsers they are lying. It is obvious from the number of identical complaints from a variety of users on this forum alone. I have just tried it on 4 different Windows machines with up-to-date windows 7 and iE9 and the sign in fails on all of them. . So you need to file a trouble ticket with the forum developers specifically about the sign in Box for IE9 on Windows 7. Hopefully they can find where the code in hanging up and fix it.
  18. It seems like it could be javascript or other local runtime code that may be the problem. It may vary from computer to computer and from browser to browser. This problem just started recently (a few weeks ago) Did you change the Login code or the version of the forum software recently? Most publishers have no way of testing on all versions of current browsers there are too many variables.
  19. Not helpful for those of us without Facebook accounts.
  20. I love that Reality distortion field that the Fruity computer company emits. Yeah Apple may have the Number 1 selling "desktop" in the US this year, i.e. the 2 iMac Models. That's only if you are comparing single SKU sales. However if you compare to all models of Windows desktops sold, the iMac is a single digit percentage. This is because Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer and all the others may have 50 to 100 models to choose from and no single one sells like the only 2 models of desktop that Apple users are forced to buy. I haven't talked about the Mac Pro since it has been a dead man walking for 3 years..
  21. I have the same problem in IE9 half the time the box won't display fully and when it does, You enter your info and hit the button and nothing happens. Window stays up and won't go away unless you close it manually. I think it is a Javascript issue since it also happens in Chrome occasionally. Maybe you should stay away from fancy pop-up boxes with drop shadows and animation. It took me 3 trys in Chrome and I never could log in in IE9. Unfortunately IE9 and Chrome make up about 95% of the browsers in use worldwide.
  22. Once again Apple copies Microsoft. Microsoft came up with this same technology several years ago in Vista called "ReadyBoost' It is built into all Versions of Windows since Vista. It uses any source of flash memory (USB2 drives SD cards CF cards etc) to hold most used programs and boot sectors. Speeds up Windows Quite a bit. Read more Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost
  23. I have been using the Seagate Momentus XT drives in my laptops for a couple of years. They are hybrid drives with a similar function to what Apple is promoting. The Apple drives have more Flash Ram than the Momentus, but I think the speedup where it counts in booting and loading your most used programs will be about the same as a standard hybrid. The 500 GB Momentus XTs are under $80 on NewEgg and can serve to speed up any laptop with eSata drives. The 750GB drives are about $119.
  24. Here's an idea for the people at Comtek or Lectro to consider. How about an audio receiver with Near Field Com chip that would detect when you are near the monitor and drop into delay mode. When you wandered away from the monitor it would return to normal no delay. Just put a NFC transmitter on top of the delayed Video Monitors and let the people wander where they want.
  25. Jeff, you are mistaken on several points. First, Microsoft is a hardware and software company, they have been designing and selling Mice and Keyboards since before the introduction of Windows 1.0. Second, no one can Copyright a single word. Not even Microsoft. You can however register a word as a Trademark if you are using it to represent your product or services. Like "Apple" or "Windows" even though those words are common and represent other objects that don't relate to the Trademark holders products. Once registered as a trademark and the word is used in commerce to represent a specific product or service you must protect that trademark to prevent dilution by preventing others from using that mark to represent similar products or services. Apple computer can't sue a Fruit juice company for using Apple in the description of their drink products. And Microsoft can't sue Pella for advertising "Pella Windows" since they don't refer to Software products. These laws serve to protect the consumer from counterfeit products or from competitors trying to confuse consumers by capitalizing on another companies Trademark. Patents are completely different and were designed to cover unique mechanical devices and the processes they accomplish.(like the mouse and the use of a second mechanical button to bring up a contextual choice menu) That was a unique concept and was non-obvious when it was introduced. An example of a perfectly legal patent under our original system. However application of Patents to protect designs (look and feel patents) have crept into the system and have now completely stymied the creative process. Software Patents and Look and Feel patents were all denied a couple of decades ago. Only through intense lobbying efforts and political manipulation of the Judicial system have multi-billion dollar corporations like Apple and Microsoft and big Pharmaceutical companies. been able to game the system to try and use it to give them each unfair advantage by preventing innovation by competitors. The system is broken and the consumer is the victim.
