  1. Only problem with the Kingston 512GB THumb drive is the price. It is about $800 for the 512GB. And probably more than $1500 for the 1 TB when it becomes available. Cheaper 240GB SSDs at about $200 would be a better choice and just as rugged
  2. Well I don't know where the problem is in your case but I would question the Workflow. You are just asking for trouble using the 24.00 frame rate in cameras that are normally run at 23.976. This complicated by the non standard sample rate of 48048 makes things worse. The chances for math errors to happen in pull down/pull up operations is very great here. All it takes is one link in the chain set to the wrong sample rate or frame rate to throw a monkey wrench in the whole mess. The 24.00 and 4808 combo made sense (as much as it could) when shooting on Film and doing Telecine Transfers to 29.97 video.from linear (non file based) media..This method was developed to fool the machines into slowing down their electronicly controlled motors to stay in sync since there was no metadata stored in DAT or 1/4' tape that told the machines what speed the original was recorded at. When we went to file based recorders, we had to create a "F" or fake mode that recorded at a pulled up sample rate but marked the metadata with a normal sample rate so the telecine controlers would automatically pull down the files. However without Telecine, none of this is necessary . When using a file based Recorder and file based Alexa and a Modern version of AVID (also file based) there is no reason to do any of the girations necessary for shooting at speeds requireing pull-down and pull up. Speed changes in file based media are simulated by changing the math used in calculating the playback sample rate and the time code is calculated based on that sample rate so the opportunity for error is great. A better workflow would have been to shoot everyting at 23.976 and 48k. Set the Avid project to the same frame rate and if the project is going to FILM OUT (which is becoming rare these days) they can do the pull up of everthing to 24.00 in the prep of the stems for mastering the release formats. -----Courtney
  3. Well I have worked up close and personal with Tigers and The CG work in Pi is good but it is NOT all CGI. About 23 shots in the film that feature the tiger are of a living Bengal Beast. The CGI was used more for the Killing scenes and the more complex action scenes with flying fish etc. I think the mixing in of the Real Tiger footage with the CGI made the CGI much more believable.
  4. Looks like an ad placed by an elementary school student who fancies himself as the next Steven Speilberg. Except Steven Speilberg probably knew what a fishpole was when he was 10.
  5. Yeah that is a good price for the area. But to show you how the Flippers have forced up prices in L.A. That house sold for 340K in 2001 then 895K Just 3 years later as the bubble was growing. It probably got up to 1.5 Million before the bubble broke in 2008. Now it is a deal at 995k. But remember it was 340k just 12 years ago. Of course Engin is moving from New York where 2 Bedroom apartments in Manhattan can go for over 2 million.
  6. I guess "Speed" is easier to shout than "Digitizing" Which would be accurate.
  7. Don't look at it as replacing what the DIT does. You can have a Pix 260i (Or 2 of them) on your cart to basically replace your sound recorder. It will record up to 32 tracks of audio every time you hit the record button. But it also does another thing that is of great value to the producer. It eliminates the need to sync up dailies and create proxies for editorial. The DIT sill handles all the color LUT creation and aid to the DP by providing High quality HD monitoring and scopes for exposure. You would just take 2 feeds from the DIT station of the color corrected HD video from both A and B cameras thereby providing you with 2 clear monitors on your cart which you probably are doing now. Except at the end of the day you hand in the 2 hard drives with all the sound and Video Proxies all synced and ready for edit. For this the producer may pay an additional fee for the the machines because they will save them hours in post. And if you are rolling 2 Pix 260s for A and B cameras you would have a full backup of all tracks in a redundant machine. (and you could record to an external HD on one of them as well for on set archive)
  8. Pacific Radio Burbank moved and are not far from Frys but are now on Thornton East of the entry to the burbank Airport. You could also try Electronic City on Burbank blvd. They are open Saturday.
  9. Although the "Techflex" and other expandable flexible nylon sheaths work quite well and protect the cable I should mention that they are very dangerous on a set. When run across a linoleum or polished floor they make great banana peel substitutes. Since our camera department has started using Techflex to enclose the 2 HDSDI coax cables to the camera I, (and others on the set) have nearly broken my neck or twisted my ankle every time I step on one of these slippery devils. They are a big liability and you need to carry a lot of good insurance if you plan on stringing them across a floor where people can walk. I have used 1" pieces of Heat shrink as mentioned above carefully slid on the cables from one end while the connectors are off and then shrunk down at 1 foot intervals. Another possibility if you can't or don't want to remove connectors, is to use that silicon or self vulcanizing rubber tape that has no adhesive but fuses to itself. You can find it at some surplus stores or is sold under the name "Rescue Tape" at Amazon and some other online stores. http://www.amazon.com/RESCUE-Self-Fusing-Silicone-Tape-BLACK/dp/B000ZTK6CI Put a 1" strip holding the cables together about every foot. Remember to stretch it tight before wrapping it onto itself
  10. Steig is 100 percent correct once you lose a fiber box your out of luck and sometimes when you lose a box it can be maddening trying to figure out which one and where it is. No doubt about the fiber link, but why didn't they have local UPS in the Booth to power the link? A couple of $100 off the shelf UPS boxes pluged into the Wireless receivers, Fiber link power supply and com box would have at least let them have communication. And if the camreas were also used in HH mode they would have had batteries on them and been able to cover it as a news event. I had a similar power failure in the booth of a Super Bowl in Pasadena decades ago and had the teleprompter on my own Local UPS. I lost local booth power for about 10 minutes during the halftime recap and continued on with the UPS power until we could find a new source of power and ran a 100 foot cable to restore the feed to the UPS. No one was the wiser. Even the booth did not know.
  11. I think CBS really "Dropped the Ball" when it came to coverage of the Super Bowl. What, No battery Backups on their audio console and wireless Mic receivers? Although no one is yet talking about it officially, it was obvious when the power went out in Half of the Super Bowl Superdome stadium in New Orleans, they clearly had all their audio eggs (or at least most of them) in one basket. The video truck still had power but apparently the main press box lost power and all the on-air commentators as well as the house PA remained mute for the balance of the half hour blackout. Only when they scrambled to get a sideline mic activated after about 5 minutes of just crowd noise, was there any reference to what was going on. Five minutes of silence during a Super Bowl is an eternity. I would have loved to hear a recording what was going on on the headset channel of that CBS Truck. I bet in the future all radio mic receivers, inlne DAs and sub mixers will have UPS power in the future of all football broadcasts. Anyone there have any first hand info to add to my speculation?
  12. University of North Caroline has demonstrated a stretchable "Self Healing" wire that re-connects itself after 10 minutes at room temperature. How long till we can have mic cables made of this stuff? http://video.techbriefs.com/video/Self-Healing-Stretchable-Wires;Materials
  13. Remember in temperatures lower than about 5 degrees farenghight Your cables may freeze. If you make a long cable run through the snow you may not be able to wrap the cable without cracking it as it will be frozen into a straight line. Always keep your hands covered. Don't touch metal recorders/mixers etc with exposed skin.
  14. I wonder how many Pounds of "Hazardous Waste" as surplus electronics are now called, have been added to land-fills in China as a result of Pro Tools.
  15. Just was leafing through the latest HD Video Pro magazine and hit the section called Cine Sound Pro. with an article on Boom Mic Techniques. Please note the illustration on the cover and later in the article. The boom man has a shotgun mic aimed at least 6 feet above what the camera is shooting. If pointing at a person for dialogue you would never have the boom on the pole at the angle it is illustrated.... Maybe if they were doing an article on boom techniques they would have an illustrator that knows something about booming. Also the hanging cable from the boom pole is in danger of getting in the shot or at least getting in the way of the cameraman.
  16. I was having a lot of problems with this site and was working with Jeff and LB Abrams to try to find out what the cause was. Certain text boxes like the reply box had light grey fonts and no Rich Text Ribbon to allow font changes or insertion of links or pictures. Also the quotes appeared but the box that showed who was being quoted did not appear. Well I found my problem was that unbeknown to me, my IE9 browser was in "Compatibility Mode" Which apparently breaks a lot of the features of this site. To turn on and off compatibility mode click the small icon in the URL field just to the left of the Refresh Page Icon.(See attached screen grab) IF the icon is colored, compatibility mode is turned ON. If it is grey Compatibility Mode is turned OFF. If you are having troubles check the Compatibility Mode and make sure it is turned OFF.

  18. Well I just found I could "Change Theme"  To IP Board and at least the font goes back to Black for the text entry box and it doesn't seem to have the freezing problem after each page refresh.  So I like that "theme" better since is is easier on the eyes for text entry and doesn't seem to freeze up.  I would suggest anyone else having problems with IE9 go back to that theme and test it.  I have ie Spell check as you type  turned on but it doesn't in the text entry boxes on this forum for some reason.   However when I post a message the Signature is still light Grey on white.   Why don't you just stay with black on white and make it easier on us.  Highlight  of selected text could be inverse and be really visible.  It also shows who the quotes are from where your custom (Baisik NEW 3.4.0 did not show who is being quoted in the box when published.& (however that seems to have been fixed in the last few minutes)& Here is a sample of how the text entry box looks in my IE9 browser. The darker text at the bottom is Selected or Hilighted text but the lighter color text is the way the text entry box normally appears. Also, In trying to edit this post upload the sample screen grab, I discovered that Attach Files dosen't seem to work in the new Baisik New theme in IE9. I had to switch back to the IP Board theme in order to attach the JPEG below. Now all the embeded codes for non breaking space (&nbs;) seem to be incorporated into the visible text... AAAHHHHHHHHHH I give up.
  19. Jeff, The popup sign in now works in IE9. I still have the sluggish problem and when entereing text in a reply the cursor will frequenty Freeze and loose keystrokes about every 30 seconds. I checked to see if some browser plug in may be causing a confilct, but the only browser plugin That is not disabled is Flash. I have Java turned off at the moment. Whenever I choos a topic from the main page, the topic thread comes up at the top of the thread but I can't scroll down for select anything for about 12 seconds untill the chat room is populated. . I also noticed the IE or your forums automatic spell check is not working in the text entry mode. Maybe that is the cause of the freezing problem. Sorry if there are spelling errors with it droping characters and not spell checking it is a bit of a pain to type on your forum. Also when entering text in a reply the light gray font on white backround is Very hard to read. Can you go to BLACK font during text entry so it is easier to visually check spelling? I also note that the Quote in the final post window lacks info on who is being quoted.
  20. Wow , the site is so sluggish now that When I hit post reply , nothing happens then I press the button again and aparently it puts 2 copies of the post in a single reply. Didn't have any of these sluggish problems before you added chat. Now as I type in IE9 it frequently hangs for 5 or 6 seconds and loses all keystrokes that happen during those freezes. I only have this problem on this board. Other forums dosn't seem to have this problem.
  21. Are things back to norma now> The previous incarnation of quotes also failed to show who the quote was from. This is a test to see if the above quote from Jeff shows who is being quoted. 22. Oricale has patched Java Version 7 build 11 download the latest version and you shuuld be safe .
  23. Maybe you need to explain to the client that 1 file per take is how things work in the 21st Century. It saves them time and money, allows random access and offers better organization and is far less wasteful. Just tell them that it is the "Green" way to go. Do they expect the Video camera to roll continuously between setups so they just have 1 file to look at? They better get used to how things work now since film and Tape and all forms of Linear recording are going away faster than US manufacturing jobs.
  24. I know this company in Australia does 24 hour turn around and since they are quite a bit ahead of us in time, you can email them MP3 files (with time stamps) at the end of the day in the US which is the start of the day in Australia so they type while you sleep. So Turn around is quick and since you are just sending files over the internet it dosen't matter where the transcription is really done. Talk to Nicole at Mediascript Express. They use BWF Widget Pro and TC- Transcriber for Time Stamped MP3 files. http://mediascriptexpress.com/ I highly recommend them.
