Nagra transfer machine
Malcolm Davies Amps CAS replied to Malcolm Davies Amps CAS's topic in Images of Interest
Well spotted! That is the one. David also made an 8 track recorder using half inch tape. Most of the electronics were in another 4.2 case. I don't know what happened to after he passed away. -
JBond. In your vast collection do you have the Nagra transfer machine (or a photo) made by the UK's legendary Nagra Guru David Lane. It was based on a 4.2 with a synchroniser and was built to a BBC specification. Most BBC transfer Bays were quipped with these in the 70's.

Vin! The main UK factory is very close to me, if you email me with a list of what you are after I will call them and see if they can help. They probably won't be back till the 4th of Jan. but I can certainly do it then. malcolm at manxmoviesound dot com

Philip, I have always maintained that just in case the Turns, Director or Camera get it right once we have to get it right every-time- 40 replies

Nick, considering your quiet calm and unflappable nature I'm really surprised at your "gut wrenching fear." When I started in television at the BBC everything was live. All the drama, big music shows, everything. As we had nothing to compare it to then, we just did it.- 40 replies

Second Boom on Project Greenlight
Malcolm Davies Amps CAS replied to Richard Ragon's topic in General Discussion
Joshua Anderson wrote: In narrative television, we're constantly facing the two camera dilemma. We mostly boom (and double boom) entire scenes. I hate using the wires, and we'll try our best to not even put them on the actors. Joshua a man after my own heart but what do you do when post asks for Iso's in addition to your mix? -
would like to hear from someone who is not built like a racing snake and preferably works in inclement weather as some of us are of a heavier build and have to wear warm/wet weather gear more often than not. Any comments K-Tek?

Sound speed much to the amusement of a lot of the crew because of my broad Lancashire Accent. -

Rolling was frowned on as it confirmed that although the sound recorder was running but not necessarily at speed or sync. -
Just as a point of interest is the 100Mw booster frequency specific or will it cover a wider band?

Meldon Junction Signal Box in the 1950s
Malcolm Davies Amps CAS replied to Nick Flowers's topic in General Discussion
As Nick correctly points out these were Audio Radio mics & were the first radio mics I ever owned. (their designation was the RM12) and apart from the Microns they were the only ones you could buy off the shelf. Micron at the time had nearly a nine month lead time. I had four of the single channel ones two of which are in the Lady Vanishes photo. The two channel ones That Doug mentions were a disaster but in the early seventies it was either Audio RM12, Micron or nothing as Vega were virtually unheard of or obtainable in the UK. -

I would have thought that the Kudelski archives could throw some light on the mystery. -

Nick, just seen your question. It was indeed Fred Feast who played the sound man. The original version is still available on DVD from Amazon Prime under 10 UK pounds. -

Not if you are UK Vat registered. It is just a matter of giving the Italian supplier your registration number and it just becomes a paper exchange. -

Worst Customs Experience
Malcolm Davies Amps CAS replied to Nick Flowers's topic in General Discussion
Horses for courses Jack. I went to Montreal at very short notice with all the equipment taken as excess baggage. On arrival in Montreal I was interviewed by a SNOT from immigration who checked every letter of my work permit and I could tell he wasn't happy. Firstly he didn't want to speak English but as my French is restricted to the pen of my aunt he had to use English. It all came to a head when he said Why isn't a French Canadian doing this movie? There was only one possible answer I could give him which was. Because they want it done right! I had a marvelous time there and the people from Montreal were kindness themselves it's just that there's always one -

A colleague wants to read timecode jammed from a lockit box on a small android tablet and as it's a bit out of my comfort zone I thought I would ask here if anyone: A. Recommend any suitable software. B. give an indication of the size of memory that the tablet would require to run such software.
