  1. +1... and then get a VERY basic 2 track, such as tascam dr5, and a cable.. feed it from one of the many outputs on your Cooper or SD (or Wendt x4/PSC M4+... ANd feed the camera with another set of outputs.. I also see many Filmtech 4 channel mixers on Ebay , starting at $95!!! I don't know these machines as well, but they were considered pro enough to be in Glen Trew's old list of viable 4 ch mixers. They also have DIrect Outs, for ISO tracks!!! they will greatly improve a lower end recorder.. I have owned a Roland R4 Pro, and I think your budget would be well served by a good working LSP4 and either a zoom f8 or R4Pro.... that would get you 4 isos, or 4 isos and a mix (Zoom), run through decent preamps.. and a flavor or TC... Or.. SD 302 and 2 track transcription recorder.. if you can raise 650, I bet you can do something to get another $300... PA for a weekend?. Or, partner with someone, but a used 552, and split the kit rental to pay yourselves back These will all give good results, and let you build a better kit and better clientele.
  2. My condolences as well. His art and influence will be missed. CM
  3. Thanks, Larry. When my local dealer gets theirs, I will go try them out. Looking forward to it.
  4. Yep.. not happy with the results of TrackR model. battery life is 6 hours! for a cr2032! can only sync 10 of them per smartphone, and the app would only show you within a block or two where the item was. It would show you if it had left the area. Also, as a cloudsource GPS system, to use it you had to grant access to your device that was a very poor personal data security practice. Now, I am interested in these VHF-IFB as a tool for boom and utility crew members. The range will matter to me, as the UHF IFB system has huge range. And yes, I hope it will sound comparable to the UHF model within the useful range.
  5. I'm going to dissent on one category: ESP in the developing world POWER! With all the issues surrounding travel with modern batteries, and the current scary climate for world travel anyhow... consider pre arranging rentable power for your kit in each country. you should bring lots of adapters, BDS cables, interfaces, and if you can find one of those NP1 shaped shells that hold disposable AA batteries, bring that. I would give serious thought to Hawk-Woods BDS/interfaces for consumer sony camcorder batteries. Second choice: In the developed/Industrial world: Wireles channels... esp in Japan.. pre-plan with rental houses so you have legal and pre-coordinated wireless to stay legal and effective. You are taking a chance on the maintenance of these.. but you can check on who has a good rep through your friends in this community.
  6. Do headphones work? likely you'd get sound only to one ear, and would need to set output to +12
  7. AGREE! I have been telling the county that I am conducting a natural landscaping project on the wildlife sanctuary that surrounds my home for over a decade. Of course the neighborhood considers our house a poor candidate for the annual garden club award!
  8. And of course, you never see a leaf blower used to gather leaves, only to push them on to someone else's property.
  9. If you can lay hands on the Loon pole you wish to buy before handing over money, you'll probably love it. Ordering one and getting it delivered has taken wildly varying amounts of time in recent years. I am not sure what their delivery timetable currently is. But I like them very much. I also like Ambient, and think you'd be happy if you want an internal cable capability. Panamic's are excellent external cable booms.
  10. Absolutely, the Senator is fun and inspiring conversation in person. He is quite willing to have theoretical and practical discussions without pointing at the <hat>. If you come to one of our Atlanta Sound Mixer gatherings, you may get a chance to have a great talk with a wonderful person.
  11. Did this producer have anything to do with your need for G&E gear in Decatur GA? Sorry I did not get to meet you then.
  12. love seeing the running fan in the setup.
  13. Hello, It looks like I am going to be in Jax from Mid October to Late November. Keeping a family member company while they are stationed there. Was thinking of bringing my Bag Kit and being available for work there. Could theoretically bring cart.. or be someone's utility. Experienced EPK/Splinter unit on union shows.. and of course I have done corporate and industrial. I am an IA member, and can check in with local for permission to work there. If anyone there wants me to cover a day here and there, I am not relocating permanently, and won't keep your clients. Drop me a PM if you'd like to discuss.
  14. Chris and Laurie in Atlanta wish you the Happiest of Birthdays!
  15. I know this production company. This is work for hire for them, and they do not pick the music for their shows.. the network does.. look up the music supervisor of record for the program and contact them. BTW.. Crazylegs are reputable, and fine to work with. Many Atlanta based sound mixers have worked for them
  16. Tried TRACKR earlier in the year. It's not a great choice for a few reasons. 1)Map App Not very precise. About a one city block is as small as it can tell you. which is not consistently enough for you to hear if you turn on its sound producing function. My mixer felt it was better than nothing, but I don't think it was that helpful 2)you can match a max of 10 of them per mobile device, and I am not certain that you really get a unique identifier per trackr unit. That is, I think we had two tx units with the same signature. 3) the battery life for the disc battery is ..... 6-10 hours! making it prohibitively expensive to deploy these very day.
  17. REPLICANT ALERT!!! Check to see if his wardrobe has any metailc cloth near your antenna.. and just to see if his entire body is a problem... try finding an area on the outside of his wardrobe where the pack does work... and then try to hide it under clothing there.. Seriously... Check to see if he has a blackberry device.... or any personal electronics at all. I have met and worked with a few people that do interfere with electrical devices from time to time (including my spouse).. boom him if he's like that..
  18. add me to the list of people happy to buy a 744t for $1k... even though I would need at least a couple channels of pre-amp to use it in my workflow. Seriously... if anyone out there has one at that price, PM me
  19. I would absolutely try hiding lav mics in overhead lighting. Sanken Cos11, Countryman B6, or AKG 417.. see if you can find an online photo of the restaurant.. absolutely try to get in with the Art Dept people to plan this. And.. prop vase with an tx and an omnigoose may also work.. but I bet an OST and a TX will be the winner.. consider if you can find some ornamental straw or tubing and some joe's sticky stuff to hide the mic in plain sight..
  20. We remain an afterthought BTW, Literally worked with a DEAF focus puller this year. he had a 2nd AC next to him wearing a comtek to tap him on the shoulder to cue him for dialog motivated focus pulls. This frustrated the DoP pretty badly
  21. did you "lock" the two layers of the shirt and mic concealer all together with top stick? the more static the combination is, the better it sounds
  22. CIne Tape = noise.. always Also, I think this was probably not properly loaded/threaded if it made noise like a sewing machine. My memory is that this model was very quiet, esp compared to the 35BL cameras. I wont be surprised at all to hear that they had film scratches on your project.
  23. had no appropriate materials, tried them at the cart, rejected both for the reason in your post.
