  1. Congrats, Jan. That's awesome! R
  2. +1. Try a Hush Lav foam pad on the end of the Tx antenna to keep it from coming into contact with sweaty skin... R
  3. Not a bad idea... I've used shrink tube over the cable before just to have the cable break at the end of the shrink tube, but looks like that final step of adhering to the wall wart itself would gain a lot of stress relief for the cable. Thx, R
  4. Ugh. You caught Mr Blankenship! That, and I wrap it using my elbow, like it's some kind of 40 year lawnmower extension cord. What could possibly go wrong? R
  5. Apparently because "businesses have concluded that most of their customers are completely pleased with the economical versions." Wrapping them carefully. In different ways. Standing them upright. Then laying them flat. Same end result. R
  6. I have a lot of wall warts and AC adaptors as well, some going out in the field and being used everyday, some live in cases and are seldom or never used, but it would seem as though it doesn't 'depend' which ones break, Michael Michaels. The ones that break, in my case, exclusively, are the iPower units. End of list. A big thanks to the electrically knowlegeable folks who posted above... so glad somebody knows about this stuff. Best, R
  7. Great job, Jonathan... Absolutely fantastic! She's one lucky girl. I'm glad the answer was a wholehearted 'yes' and not 'it depends'! Best to you both, R
  8. For me... Humidity issues with mics seem to be a bit of a cumulative thing. I've working in humid rainforests for days on end and had humidity issues - even with a 416. If you're shooting in Hong Kong and retiring to a nice air conditioned hotel in the evening... You might be OK with the MK41, but as many others have already said - have a backup ready. R
  9. The wall wart/AC adaptor on these have failed me many times as well... I've managed to wrangle a few AC adaptor replacements, but at $40, even if one had to buy one once a week, we'd still be ahead of the bad old days of using alkalines @ 2 bucks a pop. Still not an excuse for them to constantly fail as they do. If anyone out there has found reasonable replacements (hard to find 13V), I'd be interested in hearing about them. R
  10. The Nomad does Brazilians now? I thought that feature was being built into the next firmware update. R
  11. I was able to get everything (wireless, battery distro, etc) into the 617, but media access was quite difficult, it does NOT stand on its own. :-(
  12. Some cities (municipal by-laws) here charge $0.05 per bag, so you can save even more bringing your own bags! R
  13. Do: Never been downtown, but locals have always mentioned to me that the old downtown is pretty old school and not to be missed. Do: Ask for an upgrade. In a city full of hotel rooms, I think I've been upgraded every time I've stayed there... Point to your pile of gear, and mention a little extra space would be nice. Do: Some hotels have big pool party days on certain days ... Find out which ones are on which days... I think the HRH has a 'Rehab Sunday' pool party. Not to be missed. Do: Not sure if it has opened yet, but I worked on a doc about a month or two ago about Véronic DiCaire's show opening in Vegas. Might be up and running by now. Would be a good show to check out! Don't: Take a limo ride from the airport, it was about $50 for a 2 block trip for me. Cut to me taking a $50 limo ride to a restaurant about a block away from my hotel the next day. That Cut into my budget for other things! Have fun! R
  14. Agreed... not all big box stores are created equally... I think the Wal-Mart mentality of pressuring suppliers to constantly drive down price (and quality) at any cost has now leeched into the rest of our economies, making paying someone a fair wage for a fair days work now seems like somewhat of an extravagance. Costco operates at a something 1.25% profit margin, about half of what Wal-Mart does, and still manages to treat and pay their employees well... I know where I'm going to be spending money. R
  15. +1! Little wider with easier access to the media slots. AND handles! Perfection. R
  16. Regarding payment terms in our industry.... Waiting 30 days has always been the standard in the freelance world for me. That said, I noticed a few things the other day when getting some household things done. 1/ My plumber make $90/hour. I did not negotiate his price down because he didn't use all of his tools. 2/ An independent mechanic I take my car to, has a swipe thing on his iPhone for taking credit cards... Instant payment, (for a small percentage fee, I guess) not 30 days. The third thing I noticed... Instant payment and not negotiating constantly would be pretty nice! I want to be a little more like my plumber and mechanic when it comes to getting paid! Cheers, Rich
  17. No handles on the 617was a bit of a deal breaker for me. R
  18. 601 does, but it is too small for the 664... And no, the Petrol 617 does not sit flat very well and actually getting at the media cards was a PITA, in my opinion. R
  19. i'd be interested in hearing about other great bags people are actually using for their 664 as well. I'm currently using a modified Petrol PS601 to have a nice, tight rig, but it isn't ideal. I've tried a PS617, and don't love the fact that it doesn't stand up on it's own, and media was not all that easy to access, I've read that media access isn't that easy with the 664 PortaBrace bags, either. Folks seem to love the Kortwich bags... so I'd like to ask... does it stand up on its own when laid flat, and is it easy to access media? Cheers, Rich
