  1. The one thing you are all forgetting is the QUALITY of the old 1/4" tape. It also has a shelf life of 25+ years. CDs, DVDs and Hard Drives are still an unknown quantity as far as archiving. As has been said in other posts " you get what you pay for". What happens is people want to buy cheaper so the manufacturer makes cheaper.....eventually quality takes a hit and then...... it ends up in tears!!! Having been a Tape Distributor for over 20 years in a past life, I have seen what happens to companies that try to "DO Cheap"! Or try and compete against a cheaper product/Format. Why do you think Quantegy/Ampex and BASF/Emtec disappeared? So don't keep asking for Cheaper, Ask for the Producers and Production Companies to buy QUALITY. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH that feels better!
  2. Isn't it our job as the FIELD recordist to catch the best sound we can in the field, and POST to mix it to get the best mix? I agree we are mixers as well as catchers, so if we give them both, don't we allow POST to clean up any problems that might be found?? Depending on the shoot Feature, corporate, commercial or drama. Some need to be mixed on set/field, while some they want ISO so it can be built up in POST? The problem is that once recorded and it goes to post, it's too late!! Because sound isn't seen during the shoot, it only becomes a problem when it is too late.
  3. I recently was on a feature shoot and was using a SD788T. I recorded on a CF as well as an external HD. The production team would dump the CF card each night to master HD that they had for the Camera also recording on CF. I kept the HD as a Master Master just in case everything went pear shaped.
  4. Taken a while but us Aussies always support a good cause. $100 Keep up the great work upwards and onwards. Regards Tony
  5. Might help with an email address !!!
  6. With all due respect I waited nearly 6 months to get my order in Australia. All up 7 units from 4 different blocks. Why There is always an excuse, but at the end of the day, suppliers can't expect clients to wait for their products. One way to loose your business is to burn your client......and that happens without gear!!
  7. The biggest problem I see is that we have too many tracks ( 6+) to mix and the ability to actually get it right first time every time. I find being able to ISO gives me a lot more flexibility and the POST guys/gals a chance to recover, if it all goes pear shaped.
  8. Thanks Phil I know this has always been a sore point between location and post. It seems the more technology we get the wider the gap!! Thanks again Tony
  9. I recently worked on a Feature and was asked by POST to record 24bit at 96Khz. I was using a 788ssd from a bag as it was a documentary style shoot. A) not easy recording multiple tracks and this function drops most functions like Eq and Limiters. My question is. As a POST mixer why would you ask for 24/96 and would you use the mix tracks or the ISO tracks? If ISO is there a point in doing a MIX in Field?? I ended up ISOing all tracks and sending a Guide track mix to the HD recorder.
  10. The sad thing is........most of the stuff still works......... As my grandfather would say " Almost brand new!!!!" ............ Anyone remember the Gibson Girl Splicer? Now that's showing your age!!
  11. I did try to block, but the connection would simply drop out. even when the Ipad was 2 inches from the CL-WiFi!! But I always noticed it more when a crew member with a 3g phone walked by. Just thought I'd mention it, in case. Most annoying when you load up for the next scene and it drops out. Also you have to be careful when you use the record function as it takes a couple of seconds to activate, and if you get overly excited you can do a double roll and jump to the next take (false Take).....also annoying.
  12. I have been using the CL-WiFi on a feature where the local mobile service was non existent. I have a strange feeling that the reason the CL-WiFi was dropping out all the time was that most of the crew were using 3g and because there was no service their phones kept trying to hook into the CL-Wifi. I have to say the application is fantastic and simple..........yes it would be nice to have more features, but I'm sure SD will do that.
