  1. The barn owl has amazing listening abilities.Check it out. http://www.owlpages.com/articles.php?section=Owl+Physiology&title=Hearing
  2. Dan, I think you might this link interesting,http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070801091509.htm
  3. Hey Paul, I have some "old school " radio mike belts that are superior to neo-pax bands. This could be a whole other topic. Anyway, a really good thing to have on hand is some rolls of 3M Coband. It works well for ladies thighs and for calves, ankles, extra large folks and much more. Its the best thing since duct tape! Also; I think a plastic "can" of 3 in one oil is better to use than WD40, as you are able to put the exactly where you need it and there is no over spray or fumes. KKS.
  4. The Stanley Fat Max is my current follow cart, my main cart is kind of old school and carries a LOT of the main gear. The fat max is compact and makes excellent use of space. It fits almost perfectly in my Mitubishi Endeavor ( medium SUV.) Its great for day playing and small/ med. projects. KKS.
  5. It's good to carry your own furniture pads. Space blankets to cover carts. W/handy clamps. Cordless drill w/hole saw bit ( for making your own rat-holes for cables). I prefer velcro ties over zip ties, because they are reusable. Joes sticky stuff. 3M makes a version of it also, that I've seen at home depot. Flexable/malleable aluminium solid tubing can work well as boom/mount for lavs. in cars/trucks/small rooms, etc. Now to figure out how to get rid of crickets and the wild parrots of pasadena. KKS.
  6. This looks like a better way to make the sanken vampire clip, to me anyway . Pro Sound out of New York ......
  7. I had to shorten them up about 3/8" , that is trim em down with an exato knife . I did this before putting the mike to far in though. One thought is to use a hair dryer to carefully heat the out side tube and it may possibly expand enough to let you pull out the COS-11
  8. I hope the walking machine makes a comeback, what a fantastic invention ! I was on a commercial shoot where an off-road Segway ( a little bigger than street version, with knobby tires ) had a post on it to connect up a steady cam rig. The Dp/director was able to do some amazing 360 degree shots, in this case, circling around a charactor in a backyard. KKS
  9. Hey Bob D. and Chas, the comment I made was to the general vibe of the way this ( another informative thread ) affected me. No disrespect was meant for for anybody . Mel Gibson used to sing that line, and its kind of a metaphor for the motion picture business . KKS.
  10. " He's got a brown ring around his nose, and everyday it grows and grows ! " Sycophantism usually looks worse when you try to hide it. KKS.
  11. I think that on set theft is becoming one of the issues that needs to be pushed to the forefront of our discussions. Working fly by night shoots and day-playing, sound folk seem to to be easy pickings for the klepto-minded, who are also inhabiting these transient forms of employment. I have had a lav stolen off of my cart while i was sitting in front it ! Its not so easy to get reimbursed by the production company and you risk ever being hired again if you push the issue. That was my experience. So, never leave your cart unattended, pay as close attention as as possible and yes, suspect everyone. Now i think i know why some of the older mixers i used to work with stayed so far away from the set ! Oh yea, an thank God for Spell Check. KKS.
  12. I have a Sennheiser MKH50 & a 8050 and to my ears, the match up is excellent. If you use the 8050 on a pole with a 90% angled XLR, the profile is only a smidgen larger than a Schoeps with a GVC. And it's easier to maneuver. The 8050 pattern is some what forgiving and like I to have more side angle rejection. From what I have read, these mic's are all very close and match up well. The 8050 is my favorite mic right now. KKS.
  13. These look really cool & really functional. They are new and on back order at Sammy's Camera (an online purchase @ $299.00) I hope to receive mine in around 3 weeks. Here are some links, KKS. http://www.rodemic.com/accessory.php?product=Blimphttp://www.rodemic.com/news.php?article=0013
  14. Hey Billy, Thanks so much , but beware, you just might get your own "Main Board " Column on the jwsound discussion forum. Something like " Just ask Billy ? " or " Back at Billy's cart " or ,................... Take Care, KKS
  15. Hello Billy, Can I just ask, how are you powering up all of your gear ? Also it looks like you are not using a second recording machine. If that's the case, what are your thoughts about using a back up recorder? And what typically ends up being the media of choice for dallies/post etc.? Any archiving for sound editors, Raid etc. ? KKS
  16. I just saw this company via RAMPS and it is a very interesting sight for dyi. cart building. http://8020.net/T-Slot-1.asp Johnpaul has already made a cart from this type of extruded aluminum . KKS.
  17. That is a nice looking cart, one of the best I have ever seen, I like that you stayed away from the rack mount/case style. Excellent work Vin, its just beautiful. KKS
  18. My dad was the sound recordist on " Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid ", one of my all time favorite movies. Paul is one the best in the biz on or off the camera . Its sad when one of the great ones, goes. KKS
  19. oops, hit the post button, instead of the spell check one. I just wanted to say "ditto" to Mick's post . Well put. Plus now everybody gets to see what a groovy screen saver you have ! Best, KKS
  20. Its a good insurance policy for all sound crew members to be familiar with all aspects of each persons dailly rutien
  21. I don't know if its true, but I heard a rumor, that a sound mixer was actually seen bringing a waistband, transmitter and lav to an actors dressing room, while the the two boom ops were working out shadows & reflections on the set ? Isn't it a known fact that mixers don't leave their lap-tops unless there's an earthquake or something ??..... KKS
  22. " When actors need to be wired, often the sound department member wiring will have to go blocks away to camperland to do it there and then inevitably wait around for ages while hair and makeup finishes, all during which time the camera and electrics are busy adding things and tweaking. " This is a serious waste of manpower in my experience. We have always insisted on wiring the actors at the sound or utility sound cart. While watching the set there are windows of opportunity for both the boom op and the 3rd ( who may be needed on 2nd boom for the scene anyway ) to wire people as they make it to the set . The boom op will tell the 1st AD, that we need the actors a few minutes before they are called in for a for first team rehearsal and I will pitch in and help to expedite the wiring of talent if need be . my 2 c KKS.
  23. Rich and Noah, thank you for clearing that up for me. KKS.
  24. Going back to this original topic, I recently watched the movie " American Beauty " again and also have just seen the new Coen brothers movie "Burn After Reading" . Both of these films have scenes in them where two characters are engaged in a telephone conversation and are overlapping each other. Each person is in an isolated shot, when the off camera is heard, is sounds as if it is "phone filtered" and yet it is still overlapping the on camera dialog. I'm thinking that the other actor is being filmed and recorded simultaneously in an isolated set and the phone call is "live" and off camera dialog is getting the "phone filter " treatment in post ? RVD. am even I close to figuring this out ? as I believe you were the mixer on american beauty . Peter Kurland , did "Burn... " Best Regards, KKS.
