  1. Simon im sorta in love and awe of your use of the D4 for the hops and director ifb. Im sure lots of others use this but i really dig it. After i get some more money and start doing some more gigs with my bag i may have to upgrade to one D4 system. It has given me some ideas for future upgrades. thou Its a pricy for the use of the comtek may be just crazy for myself. Im going to have to get a picture of my current set up. I want to keep my bag as small as can be but be super functional. No more than 4 channels, I have a 302 and use an RX emergency with the mix in, if i need an extra wireless, i also have a 702 in my bag since i do alot of 5/7D shoots. Im give a full description later when i post the picture.
  2. i would like to see this cart in action. these are some pretty shots taken already but i wanta see it in action.
  3. i have to say this is pretty cool. And could interesting use on some sets for boom opt's. I worked on a commercial where the DP decided to put a large zoom lens on to be able to get tights or wides without swapping the lens. Good for them, saves some time, but i could never tell if they were tight or wide. The ipod getting a video feed would be nice to check. I could see the boom opt wearing the ipod in a "joggers" arm strap, to check the frame and such.
  4. Maybe the original reason he was calling was to stir up some more business out of people who already own loons. Maybe it was his last chance to turn the company around. Who knows. Since posting this i was really looking forward to hearing that he was getting his act together and getting the factory back up and running in MT. Looks like this hasnt happen. He was he was going to update the loon website, but he hasnt. Same old sad story. Great products but poor decisions in the company have been made. For some of the guys on here talking about waiting 2 months or even a month without contact. I suggest you call your card company and talk about what actions to be taken. Find out the wait time to needed to report, and do so promptly.
  5. I have been on a shoot on a soccer field in mid summer, where there was lighting and thunder rain storms popping all over. One came close and a lightning strike hit the ground and shocked a PA while she was under a popup tent, ground wet. She was taken to the hospital. Storms should not be overlooked. I think you did the smart thing, by taking care of your crew and making sure safety was highest priority.
  6. Toronoto is a large film area. Tons of TV series film there, and lots of movies film there also because they dont want to pay to film in expensives cities like NYC or DC ect. Dont worry about moving. Just learn what you need to learn.
  7. Finding them is hit or miss, Look on film offices, (i typed in toronto film office and found this http://www.toronto.ca/tfto/pdf/currentlist.pdf ) its a semi current list of ongoing productions. If you can find a crew directory this could also be helpful. Then you can learn the names of mixers, boom opts, and utilities in your area. And dont hesitate on also contacting booms and utilities, they may need someone to fill in a day, or may recommend you to some other company. ALso find a directory of film companies, cant hurt to call them and tell them you are looking to PA. Also since you have done AV stuff, you could also try working as a Video assit assistant, Video Assit normally is close to the sound department, a lot of times they share a trailer. You could also lurk around Trew Audio in Toronto and hassle soundies that go in to the shop. Im just kidding about that.
  8. Find your fellow local mixers and boom opts, with film offices, imdb, ect ect. Email or call them and stay persistent. But then don't over do it, remember working on sets are normally long hours, so it may take some time to return a call or email. You can PA to also meet these sound mixers in person. Get ahold of smaller production companies and work up a indie resume. Like Crew says toronto produces a lot of media theres probably room for you to learn and grow. It can take time, or no time at all. It does take hard work.
  9. For DSLR shoots time code is semi existent. You can buy lockit boxes for a 5d now but a lot of people just use pluraleyes on those shoots. But on your features films and TV series TC is still widely used. Gotta be redundant when filming because its cost so much. The scenes are still using a marker slate to be the back up plan. In case the TC is lost(red cameras notoriously are known for this) the clapper will be your back up. If there was a mic on the camera or you were sending wireless or line level to camera they can use plauraleyes to sync your double system tracks. Most features use TC slates, which redundantly show the timecode and other info on the slate to help give another visual frame reference. Your teacher may have ment this as TC is dying but he is wrong. TC will be used for a long time to come still.
  10. I have 2 rode lavs, with one senn connector, 2 lectro connectors, and one Xlr connector. I Leave the lectros connectors on, and when i do switch them, i take an extra few seconds to take my time, to make sure they are secure. You can buy a replacement/Longer cables to go with them. The extra cable may be helpful if the usage ware is a problem. I try my hardest not to swap my connectors, and just use that as a back up plan. I like the way they sound. I know they can be a bit wider than the sankens but they have a nice tone. Id say they have some body to them. The only complain is the foam wind screen. I like the sankens metal mesh windscreen, They may fit the rode lav. But Rode has been coming out with expanded ideas with there lav's. I see they now make a violin clip, to the rode lav. So im sure they will pop out a little rode wire mess pop filter. I think DVE sells the lavs with a choice of connector, which most stores you have to buy them separate.
  11. I heard a New York DP say this the other day.(This only sounds right when using a Brooklyn Accent) "It's Wider, Don't Matter"
  12. Those bags look over priced, your better suited using the usual suspects.
  13. Jealous, Drive had some great sound design. And overall the film is my favorite this year so far.
  14. haha Greg sextro's link made me laugh to hard. That was pretty nifty.
  15. http://www.vimeo.com/25339960 Just found this, watching this guy play the moog, reminded me of how i used to love synths because of the knobs and design aspect. And now knobs are still my favorite part of my mixer. haha
  16. I use a MK012, paired with my NTG-3. I bought mine from Oktava mod. Which the owner mod's the mic to make it sound even better, maybe you should return yours to the sound room, and order one from him. Oktavamod.com this didn't answer your question but maybe you will get a better mic out of it.
  17. The Petrol is nice, it has the wireless pouches, that can be mounted to your shoulders, or taken off. You could use this to put a comtek transmitter to get some height and distance from the rest of your wireless.
  18. Thank you. Another great read. I will have to go back and read all of the older issues.
  19. Haha im bring this up next time i'm on set, see what else we can come up with. I like squeaks, i also like being referred as The Noise Boys. that one always made me laugh too.
  20. Looks to be made of a better material than the zoom h4n. Or maybe not. its hard to say from a picture. Interesting for ambiance sound design.
  21. Charge the production for the receivers and use a cable, Easy done, no body gets hurt. Baddabing baddaboom
  22. Since the google doodle isnt showing in america, but was shown else where, maybe because its a holiday or some other reason, i found the doodle on youtube. * Update* I heard google, may put it up on tuesday here in the US.
  23. Hey all, Music is a big part of a lot of our "why we became sound men and women" stories. Today at google, the google logo will show a tribute video to Queen singer Freddie Mercury who would of been 65 today. Check it out and smile. http://www.google.com.sg/
