  1. So, how does one become a Y-16A trainee? I don't see any info on the IATSE website and Scott is out of the office for the rest of the day.
  2. Jeff, This is what I initially discovered when doing my initial search for the SKB. I noticed Coffey and LSC only sell complete units. I'm more of a DIY kinda guy anyways so I was hoping to get more info on where I can get parts. Now that I know the manufacturer names it has been a lot easier tracking down good deals on parts. It would be nice having a parts breakdown on the photo gallery but I guess having this website alone is a great resource since I would have a terrible time without the advice offered by the great people I've met here! Thanks a million, Mike
  3. Yeah man, I didn't know who made them so that was the problem.
  4. Everyone, thanks so much for all the info. I honestly didn't have time to get back to this thread soon after posting it but I did read every single comment just now. I really appreciate all the input as it will be a good reference for future gigs. Mike
  5. Robert, Yeah, I figure nothing worth having ever comes easy so I'm willing to put in the work. At least now I know to be a bit more demanding when it comes to payroll/paperwork for future gigs.
  6. Hello Jay, I just spoke to Scott this morning and he told me basically the same thing you did except he didn't mention the trainee position. Since I've done a lot of indy gigs some of my pay was in the form of a personal check or cash. I see now how this is going to bite me in the ass. Can this type of work be considered for my days if I had the Producer write a letter? I'm going to see if I can get my foot in the door via the trainee position. It may be a stretch but it is worth a shot. Again, thanks a lot!
  7. ok, well for the type of work I'm doing (mainly commercials, indy films, low budget type stuff) I was looking to build a smaller SKB type setup that would have a couple drawers on the bottom for all my wireless stuff, mics, etc. I wasn't planning on building something quite as large as what most people use because right now I'm not at that level yet. Since I know how to build just about anything I figured this would be a fun project for me as well as save some money. Those collapsable carts that Marc suggested look great and seem to be just the right size. Unfortunately my budget is about 1/4 of what those cost, however I still think I can pull it off if I build it myself. thanks for the input everyone. It is always appreciated!
  8. Ok, well thanks a lot for the information everyone. I appreciate all the input.
  9. Does anyone know if I can work on a major network's TV show as a boom op intern and get my union days at the same time? I figured I'd give IATSE a call in the morning but I was a little eager and figured I'd post here in case someone knows. Thanks, Mike
  10. Hello again everyone, So, I'm off to build my own cart now. I've looked at a few of the designs on here and decided to use those plastic cases that have rack mounts. Problem is that I've been googling for an hour and can't find out who makes/supplies them. Any thoughts?
  11. Freaking awesome!!! I was saving for the Nomad 8. I'm pumped.
  12. Hey Tom, Thanks a bunch for the info. I will do my best to do what you say.
  13. Ok, so I'm still quite a newbie when it comes to sound so please excuse my question if it sounds silly. Does anyone have advice as to how to kill/tone down an echo in a large room. I'm helping a friend out tomorrow with a student gig of his and so we will be shooting in a large warehouse/studio type location (floor is concrete with high ceilings). I noticed a slight echo when I did some preliminary testing. I was wondering if there were any tips you guys may have that can help me out. Any info is immensely appreciated. Thanks, MIke
  14. I have to admit that I was suckered into this deal. Thanks for the video!!!! I can now confirm my headphones are fake aside from the right speaker going out in only a week of use. I did learn a valuable lesson though. I'm paying the extra $$$ to buy from a legit dealer. I can't afford to have my equipment crap out on me during a shoot...its just not worth any type of savings in my book.
  15. Thanks! I didn't even realize there was a sound cart gallery.
  16. Glenn, any chance we can get a jwsound group buy discount??
  17. Ok, so I've decided to build my first sound cart but since I'm still a newbie I'm not quite sure what the "ideal cart" would have. So, would you guys be so generous as to share your thoughts as to things I should consider in my build? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike
  18. My first feature. "Mamitas". Now playing at the LA Film Festival.
  19. John Paul, would you recommend a shelved or peaked EMW since I'm mainly going to be hiding these under clothing?
  20. On one gig I was on the DP scoffed at the Fostex FR2LE when I busted it out to snag the audio. Most other times when I'm bidding a job I'm asked what equipment I'm bringing to the table. You're right, it could be my imagination or maybe just a producer wanting to hear me say SoundDevices so they feel comfortable hiring me. In any case, having the better stuff will solve both these issues. ;-) Thanks for the tip on buying the better lavs first. I wasn't sure what part to upgrade and this makes more sense. It would be silly of me to use an ME2 on a better wireless unit.
  21. Senator, yes, I see your point and totally agree. But I've noticed on some sets I've been on the Producer, DP, and everyone else who doesn't know squat about sound feels a bit more comfortable knowing their sound guy has the "standard equipment" that is widely recognized by everyone and mainly used by professionals. Maybe when I get better I'll get over this equipment complex I have right now.
  22. Eric and Rado, thanks for the info guys. I think I will just go with the G3's and EMW until I get more experience. BTW Rado, SOrry for not picking up your 744T after all. I had an unexpected expense that wiped out my funds for a few weeks. I had seen that you already sold it though....drats! I missed out. ;(
