  1. I certainly see everyones points, for and against, but I for one would LOVE to get feedback on my work and see how others in our department go about solving the many problems of production. Everyone is different and nothing is done the same way twice, although similar, so I for one am in favor of this kind of topic. Good on ya' Zack!
  2. Thanks for the advice Senator, would you mind looking it over for feedback after a few drafts?
  3. Hang out with Camera dept. or make-up artist. It's usually the same people I "run into" on most sets.
  4. Hello beautiful people, I am starting to make a resume for myself before my list of productions get too long for me to look back on. Problem being: I don't know how to format my list of projects or what to emphasize on when talking about myself as a Sound man. Any ideas, tips, or examples?
  5. Personally, I offer both because I always have a back up plan. If somethings funks up on the boom, they could always use the lav and even any wild lines I may get from set. So I support using both lav and Boom. Besides, the lav might sound more personal , from the audience, to the actor.
  6. My school just recently got a SoundDevices 552 mixer and I am extremely anxious to get my hands on it and test it out. Are there any tips and/or tricks to using the 552? Like how to bag it, any short cuts or anything of the sort? How similar are the controls/system to the 744T? Thanks everyone in advance!
  7. I just came home from a shoot where they used an underwater camera. I put my wireless in two cups wrapped it in glad wrap, tape, and rubber bands. Very clean. How about putting a mic, cardioid or so, in a water tight box, attach it to a poll and track them underneath. Depending on size of pool and swimmer speed. Consider it boom oping, just under water. Hope that sparks an idea.
  8. Very recently I was recording for a commercial and we used an underwater camera rig. Two of my large friends where going to do a cannonball so I thought to jimmy rig my lav in an airtight seal of Glad Wrap, Duck Tape, and Rubber bands over 2 cups and more bags. It worked very well, really clean. How many of you have had a more clean underwater recording rig and how'd you do it?
  9. Thank you so much Jan, this is exactly what I'm looking for. As of now, unfortunately, I do not have any gear of my own. I always use my schools gear. I usually "check out" the same things every weekend, 744T, shotgun, lavs, and a dynamic. I might as well have my own shelf. ha.
  10. Sorry for not being more clear. I'm still in school learning more and more about production mixing on my own and a lot of my friends have asked me to record for their final project and I am wondering if here are any accessories I could get to reduce hum or if I ever run into a huge problem like a weak signal or the lights mess with my lavs. Sorry for being vague, just trying to learn from mistake of my own and others when possible. Also for the future for when I work on larger budget shoots. The does and don'ts so not to get fired, or do more harm than good on a production.
  11. Thanks so much for the help! Unfortunately I couldn't get any of my usual gear so I had to use the house set up, and the mixer was on another gig so I just bought some mini DV tape and recorded all the mics to the house cam. Marc and Whitney thanks for the link I will be sure to buy those when I can. Greatly appreciate the help guys.
  12. I have yet to record for features, will very soon I think, but choosing my love for production recording as a career. What are the biggest things I should look out for, buy, rent so I can at least crash but not burn on those fantastic days. Thanks the replies!
  13. I was asked to record a stand up comedian tomorrow night. I plan to record on the 744t, a dynamic, maybe lavalier, and shotgun mic (seinheizer mk 416 I think). I really don't know how to set up to record the comedian and or project his vice if need be. Suggestions appreciated!
  14. Tutorial please? I'm reading all of these posts and not understanding a thing, but I still get excited cause I want to be able to put in my input! Can someone help a brotha' out?
  15. I always hide lavs, that's just me, its fun to plant mics and still get clean sounds. (Some day I will be able to plant a mic in a roasted chicken.)
  16. Gasp, Shock, and Awe! Next Test: Live Rounds.
  17. So far, I carry an extension cord, Mole Skin, Cotton Balls, 8-inch long bungie cords/ties, Alcohol Pads, Freezer Bags, Rubber Bands, Glad Wrap, those rock climber hook ring thing-a-ma-yagers, and Batteries, lots of Batteries. May be missing some things....... Anyone else!?
  18. What was your greatest mistake (if you want to admit to it) and what did you learn from it? I learned, from someone else, you should ALWAYS record away from a power source!but from my own, I'd say always have a back up for a back up and batteries.
  19. Thanks for the replies! I now know to run in the other direction if someone asks for my "reel." Now I just gotta work on my resume.
  20. I am using Shure, I think, 226s or something rather, but the wire keeps failing on me so I have to get it replaced at customer service over and over. I am looking for good field/listening over ear headphones with high durability because I am always listening to music and the wire needs to be able to withstand my routines.
  21. I am starting to make my reel but don't know what or how to go about doing it. I am more production sound (Recordist) then post so any suggestions? I would appreciate it!
  22. Any ideas where I can get a vintage microphone in or near Ventura CA, Hollywood even?
  23. Thanks for the help guys! Really appreciate it. I'm starting to look for a place near my school to learn yoga and hittin' the gym at least an hour a day.
