  1. Nice! Which store were you at? K http://wanderingear.net
  2. To quote you, "it depends". I can think of numerous situations where it's not posts job to get those recordings, and it sounds like the primary goal of the op is to get a good recording, so that makes it his job, not someone else's. I second the use of 57s, and in general hard wired dynamic mics or lavs where the larger dynamics won't fit. I had good success on a Shelby cobra replica last year mixing exhaust and engine mics with a bit of tire. The tempatures get quite high in the engine compartment, I melted a mic cable and the mic mount, but it didn't matter cause I had it strapped, taped, and secured every which way I could imagine. I also tried to find and isolate the different sounds in the engine, valves, exhaust manifold, etc and then mic each one. I recommend telling them you need to be in the car to monitor, that way you get to go flying around the track at 200mph :-D Most of all, have fun! http://wanderingear.net
  3. Any info on your system? What is the exact error? I ran into a problem recently on a long timeline where pro tools hit the ram limit of a 32 bit application (2.7 gb) I downsized my session a bit and things went smoothly after. This would only be an issue on a native system, not an HD system. It's easy to check for by opening up activity monitor and looking at the ram usage if the pro tools process. http://wanderingear.net
  4. I stand corrected. I suppose I was thinking the self noise of the mic would be attenuated also, but since both mics has the same self noise (28dba according to sanken's website) I was thinking incorrectly. http://wanderingear.net
  5. I agree that overloading can be an issue with loud sound sources. No argument there. My point was that a mic with a 10db pad doesn't correlate to a 10db higher noise floor if using a quiet pre amp, which was the original statement. http://wanderingear.net
  6. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't believe that this is accurate. If you are using a good clean pre amp, like most of our proffesional gear is, adding 10db of gain on the pre amp should add very little noise. http://wanderingear.net
  7. That's interesting that you get more spray on the LCD side. My radios live in the power side, so I've never tried moving them over. I sent my nomad back to have them add the RF blocking cap on the power out. Fortunately I don't need it right now cause I'm doing a bunch of booming work. I'll post updated scans once I get it back. The cobaltex helped a bit too, but only a bit. http://wanderingear.net
  8. Nice. I plan on buying some erx to accompany my nomad and I want to use them as camera and TC hops. http://wanderingear.net
  9. I have a couple of the rycote and koala lav fur balls (can't remember their actual name) that I modified and mounted on a vampire clip for high wind work. They are bulky, and a bit scratchy when hidden, but I used them on a history channel show with vets bungee jumping off a 300? Ft. Bridge, and the wind noise was minimal. These days I have better luck with over covers, I get less clothing noise, but I pull out my furry vampires when the winds get really high. For me in that situation, the talent is usually wearing a big coat or something easy for me to hide the bulky thing in. Might not be the same in the desert. Good luck http://wanderingear.net
  10. I recently had an opportunity to watch a short film i did production sound for play at my all time favorite theatre, the Cinerama in Seattle. I think it has the best sound system in town. That was the most thrilling first time experience for me, and it still excites me. Great topic, thanks for posting you're excitement. K http://wanderingear.net
  11. I just received my Cobaltex, and did some updated scans. It seems like the fabric helps a bit, but doesn't get rid of it completely. I lined the recorder pocket with a layer, and also lined the receiver pocket with a layer. As Glenn mentioned Zaxcom does have a fix for RF spray coming from the power plug. I'm sending my unit back to get the update. Let's hope it takes care of it. Nomad powered off: Nomad powered on, no Cobaltex: Nomad powered on, with Cobaltex:
  12. The fact that I listen for a living. Also the variety.
  13. Yeah, I miss traveling. Don't have the ability to travel like that these days. I prefer having a career in sound. Someday hopefully I can do both.
  14. I thought Zaxcom released an upgrade for the STA that was supposed to help with the rf spray?
  15. Running interviews, recording to camera. Here's a pic of the fan out I made. I meant to post this pic in another thread about nomad breakaway cables, but I never got around to it.
  16. I fully agree that nothing works perfectly.
  17. Cool photos, and a cool thread. Here's how I feel today. This is a photo from Kosi Bay in South Africa. Can we say day off?
  18. Last I heard, this is a planned feature, but has not been implamented yet. Need a ta5-ta5 cable for the time being.
  19. I built a mixer fan out for my nomad with a ta5 output and a ta5 return which connects to my existing snake. Used it for the first time on friday.
  20. 1 lock up in 20 power ons? That seems hi to me. Have you asked SD what they think about that? I've only had my 552 lock up a few times in the couple years I've owned it.
  21. I didn't mean to question Jack's knowledge on the subject, but the wording of the manual seems ambiguous. It recommends to avoid a feature but doesn't state that cards faster than 133x should be avoided anywhere. http://wanderingear.net
  22. I saw this part of the manual, but I interpret it differently. It says don't use "double write speed features" but that doesn't mean any card faster than 133x. Maybe I should call zaxcom and get some clarification as to what they mean by double write speed features. http://wanderingear.net
