    ZFR100

I don't know if many people use this use this as a backup recorder on a wireless gig. It is seldom mentioned, but when you only need backup 2 tracks it is fantastically small and light. However, what does baffle me about this unit is the apparently arbitrary limit on segment (file) numbers, which is I think 250. It can take sd cards up to 16 Gb, but as anyone knows in the field, if you are on auto-load, which syncs your recorder to the camera via TC, then on docs the number of shots (and thus files) per tape can easily be 30 or more. So you can max out your sd card in terms of segments within half a dozen tapes, which might be 3 hours of recording. So what is the point of having cards which can record for 12 hours and more? If you wan to keep a days shooting on one card, you can't if you are shooting a lot. It just seems stupid that you are limited to 250 takes, when it could theoretically go up to 999. The zfr seems to be the forgotten runt of the litter, neglected, even thought it is actually very useful. Before you ask, I have emailed and phoned about these and a couple of other useful changes to Zaxcom and they have never replied in detail. So I guess it is too small a unit for them to waste time on and bother with. Which is a shame.
  2. Interesting. Where is the input trim? In the software screen? Can we have a manual or some diagrams of menus and routing, please?
  3. The main question for me is whether you can use the front panel to mix 6 into 2 and send that out, whilst recording the six channels (or hopefully 8, though I don't see how you could mix 8 with 6 pots) as separate iso's. A manual would be very helpful so that we can see the routing possibilities - in fact I would say it is essential for prospective purchasers. And what is it with the rec button - do you need to press menu then rec?
