  1. Well, i can report that I have cmc6 and mk41, and on a rainy day in England, the mic started sputtering as soon as we moved indoors, having spent some time outside. So it can, and does, happen to some of them in damp conditions with the possibility of condensation. Never happened to my 50 or 60.
  2. None on the Mac. Which is why zaxconvert is so important/useful, and why I want it to work with a stereo Maxx marf file , given that the coding is already there.
  3. That all makes sense, except that zaxconvert also has a facility to choose what tracks to convert. Therefore it would seem possible to be limited to choosing two tracks (if you have more than two, which is actually seldom the case for interviews) and then converting to 2 track tc embedded mp3's. Which would be very useful, given that the coding is already there. Hopefully that will be the case in future. (I was never talking about converting onboard the machine itself, as should have been apparent from my quoting Jack re zaxconvert).
  4. Next time, try understanding the topic under discussion, instead of patronising nonsense like this. The issue under discussion is zaxconvert in relation to MARF, plainly something you are entirely ignorant about. Hey, maybe you could use the search function, or do some googling. Contact the manufacturer if you don't understand it. You might learn something instead of wasting our time.
  5. I have been using MARF files from the ZFR to make mp3 TC files for years. It has nothing to do with linux or whatever, it is a function of Zaxconvert. I hoped Maxx marfs would have the same functionality.
  6. rather frustratingly it won't make mp3 with timecode files, which was always a godsend for generating transcription files. I always thought that was one of the great things about MARF.
  7. I reserve the right not to deal with companies with an attitude like Red's.
  8. Interesting collection of views. So i am not the only one who wonders about the membrane switches, particularly for REC. (in addition, I would swap the awkward position of the star key for the power key). I am baffled by Jack's claim that 'what difference does it make', when it makes a big difference - I just want to jab REC and go into record, as often happens when you suddenly need to, boom in one hand, on the go - as I have done on innumerable machines since DAT. I really don't like going into TC functions by mistake on the major function of the machine. Glen's assertion about Nomad and Maxx being different machines also baffles me - does this minor but important unshift function really define the difference between the two machines, and is that supposed to make me want a Nomad? This is petty and silly, and makes me question Zaxcom's attitude and thinking - give users what they want, especially when it comes to very small software changes - it boggles my mind that 2 machines with exactly the same transport layout and switches have software options removed on one -which is why the dealer and Nomad users assured me that I would be able to unshift, never for a second dreaming that 2 identical transport systems would differ in functionality on this basic point. So I hope they see sense and relent. Yes, I like to be able to change folder on a major change of scene. On docs I often end up with 6 or 8 folders at the end of the day - for example INT 1, atmos, Interviews, EXT, voiceover etc. I just think that when people go back to them, they can easily identify what they are looking for, eg interviews for transcription, atmos etc. And are therefore more likely to use them. I like the SD way of quick next folder, then usually rename them at the end of the day Just keeps everything neat and organised. I don't like to give editors a humungous folder full of unidentified files, as they usually glaze over and give up beofre they started. I am sure you are right about the MARF business making this long-winded on the Maxx. My solution would be to give users the option not to have to have MARF, and choose whether they wanted MARF, WAV, or both. I know all the arguments about MARF, but I have never run out of power during a take, so don't consider that a priority, plus you could engage it if you felt it was likely. Then you could do a quick switch to next folder if just using WAV or MARF alone. But I'm not really expecting to see this one (!), unfortunately.
  9. Whether it is a mini nomad or not is beside the point. It shares a common operating system and design, that is the point. So why miss out a basic user choice, many of which are common to both machines. Keep it simple -sure, when you press record, your priority is to go into record, not Tc. It is only the most important function of the machine, yet it is a secondary one. What do you say about the cumbersome way to change folders? That isn't simple either.
  10. Jack, you have to turn off mirroring before you can change folder, this applies even with folder change set to on. That is why I counted the incredible number of button presses to achieve this simple function. It seems very arcane, when on my SD I press stop and FF to start a new folder on all media. I am very disappointed about the lack of unshifted option, as I was told by users and vendors about it, who naturally assumed that it would be the same as Nomad. Seems an oversight to me. I understand about holding it down, but it seems clumsy to me for the primary function to be shifted, and I would prefer it the other way round, as TC is a secondary function as far as I am concerned. I want to go quickly into record, not have to faff about holding a button for 2 sec. If the Nomad has it, why on earth has the Maxx not, when it is a mini Nomad?
  11. Thanks, Zack. I looked in MODE menu, but no options to unshift system. Is it only on the Nomad?
  12. OK, first impressions, possible rookie errors. I really don't like the REC button, finding myself in timecode screen more often than not. I thought there was a menu option to reverse this behaviour, but I can't find it. 2: Changing folders takes 12 button presses (I counted them), with mirroring on, and I can't see me not having mirroring on, ever. I would really like a quick shortcut to go to next folder, on both drives. This is clunky. Am I wrong? Also, what setting are people using to use the compressors as limiters? Thanks.
  13. Oh that's interesting. Didn't know about that unit. Can't find a price on it online - is it available at the moment?
  14. Fair enough, Glenn. On the Zaxnet thing, I already have a hop, which I like, so don't need the expense of the internal radio link. Anyway, I use other mixers as well, so need one that is external. Having zaxnet without the need for a zax hop would be a great thing, although I accept it is not the way you intend to go. I just think a separate zaxnet system, with the possibility of multiple monitor feeds and tc would be great, without the xpense of zax radio links which personally I don't need. I guess the other option is TC Buddy, which has the advantage of wifi. But apart from that Maxx is a perfect small form solution for many jobs.
  15. Yes, I imagine that they could route the return in as an extra analogue in, which would be very useful. But I am guessing that it is a sales decision as opposed to a technical one, since they probably don't want to cannibalise sales of the Nomad too much. Shame, as I think if they loaded up Maxx with this plus Zaxnet, then overall sales would rocket, as opposed to chipping away at other models. Everyone's a winner then.
  16. Jack, could you be more specific. As I said, I need to know the MS options - can I decode to LR while recording, and do I also have the option to monitor decoded MS whilst recording raw MS? I need a definitive answer but it is proving hard to get. If this phase invert option exists on both record buss and headphone matrix, is it easily saved as a preset for future use.
  17. On the Nomad thread there is a discussion about the ability to phase reverse both inputs to tracks and headphone monitoring. This allows MS decoding to recorded tracks, or MS decoded monitoring. Can someone please let me know if this is available in the Maxx? I had a run through of it yesterday, but we couldn't find these possibilities, though it may have been lack of familiarity. The only thing I wasn't keen on in Maxx was the position of the star key seems really awkward, when you want to flip between home screens, tucked behind those knobs - pity it wasn't up front, say where the tone button is, which is not going to be needed in a hurry, or very often in a day.
  18. I would seriously consider if you have the experience to take this on, if it is a genuine indie film. Going from a Zoom to Cubase is simply not anywhere in the ball park for a serious mixer/recordist. Blithely talking about getting a load of radios, without real world experience of managing all of the issues involved, or even mentioning sync, is just asking for trouble, and rest assured there will be a ton of that if you proceed with this plan. Expecting people on a forum to walk you through this is just completely unrealistic.
  19. No, of course there would be no point in recording return from camera. I was thinking of more like the 302, where you can press the return buss into service as an extra line level analogue in, when it is required. The advantage of that would be that you would not need radios or a second mixer with AES outputs. It's been tremendously useful on the 302. Flexibility, yes!
  20. Well, I'd prefer to know now, the screen grab Jack posted seems to support his statement that you can. It is surely either yes or no, so which is it, Zax?
  21. Yes, Jack, I was referring to inputs 5 & 6 on the Multipin input (presumably the same as the AES inputs?). At any rate, if 6 iso's are an option, that is exactly what i wanted to hear. I assume all these routing options - tracks, busses, and headphones are saveable as presets? The other useful option, in a future update, would be to route the return inputs to the bus, and as potential iso's to give an extra analogue stereo in.
  22. To ask again: what's the deal with inputs 5 & 6 - can they be recorded as iso's instead of the mix L&R? Thanks for the MS info - does that way of routing mean that one pot will control the gain of both channels? I assume that is a saveable preset?
  23. Also, as far as I can see you can link faders for stereo or MSM, but I don't see any mention of MS decoding on 1 & 2. Which is a shame, given that even low price mixers have this function (and presumably a piece of code which Zax already have).
  24. So you could use, say, a MixPre-D to have two extra analog channels going in. Great. Is the record tracks option available to not record the mix outputs, but set them instead to record Digital In 5 & 6, thus just recording 6 isos, and leave the mix to the camera? That would be a very useful facility for those odd occasions when you have more than 4 isos.
