  1. Sorry for the confusion. I am open to a softie or foamie. The Koala seems really good - not sure where to get it in the U.S. that has it in stock - but I will look. THANKS.
  2. Any recommendations? I have had bad luck with Wind Tech in the past. The way to test a foam mic cover is to get a white sheet of paper and rub the foam. If all sorts of powder comes out on the paper, then the foam is not good for the microphone. So it is a little bit of a risk to just buy one on line. But perhaps some of you pros know what is good for this mic. THANKS in advance. AB
  3. Anyone know if they can be linked with sample (or I suppose near sample) accuracy? And if so, how? And if not now, is it in the plans? I understand the SD788t can do thiis with a special cable. THANKS, AB
  4. Who has nomads in stock and ready to ship? OR is there a line for these.
  5. I used 600x Lexar 32gb cards (two of them even) - in a Fusion 12 - no problem. This includes recording 12 tracks at once at 48k and 2 tracks or more at 96K. I was told by Zaxcom not to use them - but I had them and they worked great. Maybe later firmware or later units took care of that. Now what happens in a Nomad? Not sure.
  6. The people at Zaxcom are AWESOME. Got great recordings with the Fusion 12. When I needed help, they bent over backwards to help me. Now a question (sorry not a new thread) - can two Nomads be linked together with sample accuracy? Probably most do not need this, but I am curious if this can happen.
  7. Thanks Mike. (Or Senator Mike?) - it was not the mics for sure. BUT I suspect it was the power supply. And I think the Zaxcom experts have narrowed it down to that as well. Great people on this board. AB
  8. Talked to Zaxcom last couple of days. They have been FANTASTIC ! ! ! Problem is likely the power supply and they are fixing it. They could have given up but they did not. I am impressed. Thanks Zaxcom.
  9. When I get it back - if the problem occurs again, I will try what you recomend MSpector. As far as the mics go - I have tried several different mics and the problem occurs: Sennheiser MKH 8070s (two different 8070s tried), MKH 8020s, DPA 4011s, and Neumann KMS 105s. Also cables have been swapped out. Also, as I said - if I take a microphone in input one and output it to track two - no problem. Only if outputed to an odd number track and because of the way I had it set up - the odd number tracks are on the left headphone output. And before anyone thinks it is the headphone output, the same problem is on the flash drive. THANKS everyone. I will talk to Zaxcom tomorrow , mention the help on this thread and see if there is any news. The Zaxcom people are good folks trying very hard to go the extra mile to make sure the problem is gone.
  10. To be fair to Zaxcom - they had a hurricance come by. And they did humid test it. It just doesn't seem to happen at their shop. I even wondered if something happened while it was shipped - or if the the unit just got some extra burning in? Maybe I will get lucky and it will come back and this will never happen again. If I just use even outputs it does not appear - only on the odd outputs. AND if I hook up a denecke phantom unit and take the phantom off the Zaxcom - 99% of the time, the weird sound goes away. So I am wondering about the power supply - even though it only affects the output going to odd numbers.
  11. You guys are really kind to listen and help. This is a great forum. THANKS, AB
  12. Thanks JonG. Is there something about humidity that could make a grounding problem worse? Best, AB
  13. It seems to only affect things that are panned to the odd channels (the left). In other words, if the mic is in input two but in the matrix it goes to output one, it still occurs. This only occurs outside and apparently in high humidity. One thought I have is to put caps over the unused mic inputs, because there are just not too many places for air to get in the unit. When I get it back from Zaxcom, I will likely try that. And, for all i know, the problem has just gone away for some reason, like temporary gremlins.
  14. I would add that I think this is so rare, that is why it is hard to solve.
  15. Thanks John. Everything was powered from the NP-1 IDX battery in the unit. The only connected device were the two microphones. And it seems to be outdoor related - such as humidity related. It is just strange that it only happens with the anything going to the left channel and never the right channel.
  16. It is a Fusion 12. Sorry, thought I mentioned it above.
  17. After months of having this sound intermittently appear only the left channel and usually only when phantom power is engaged - I sent the unit into Zaxcom about a month ago. Unfortunately, the problem will not repeat itself at Zaxcom and they have been diligently trying to find out how to recreate whatever I have done to make this sound. A hurricane even went by their area, and the sound did not repeat for them! Maybe it only happens West of the Rockies? It usually happens when I am near a lake or stream and it takes about 1/2 hour before the sound on the left channel kicks in. It takes hours for it to go away once it kicks in. I have switched mics, cables, etc. many times, and it makes no difference - always on this left channel. The biggest worry is that Zaxcom ships it back to me because they cannot get this sound to occur so they can fix it and then when I get it back, it happens to me again. Can anyone identify this electronic sound? THANKS. longnoisesample-maybethsiwillhelp.mp3
  18. If the mic pres are incredible - then I suppose it is an upgrade for some units using the line outs of the unit. If the AD in the unit it is going into is really good, then perhaps the lack of digital outputs does not matter. If using it with a Nagra VI, I can see where this would supply an extra two channels ASSUMING the mics pres are as good as what is in the Nagra VI (or at least close)l How much is this unit? Personally, I have a Sound Devices USBpre2 and I find the pres on board and the digital out really useful.
  19. A nice way to get 16 channels for $7000. Two of these tascams can be linked together. I wrote to Tascam about it a while ago.
  20. Jack - this would apply to Fusion 12, Nomad, etc. - is there some reason that 96K cannot be supported when running 12 tracks? Is it a mattter of what the flash card can handle? Is it a firmware limitation, processor limitation inside the unit? THANKS, AB
  21. Thanks Lawrence. That is amazing. Does anyone know how accurate the digital clock is in this unit? Any samples anywhere? I saw a video on the web about it, but I would like to hear some samples of instrument recording.' In the meantime, I don't think anyone should judge this unit without hearing it. It could be a sleeper. Best, AB
  22. Where is the Tascam unit available for $3500? That is a great price. And by the way, they do link together for 16 tracks. Best, AB
  23. This is what I could find so far: 12.Audioroot eSMART 42-DH battery-powered box for 10 Volt digital phantom powering (DPP) input: AES42, output: AES 3 2 additional HRS power outputs for mixer / recorder supply can also be operated from an external power supply
  24. Suppose your recorder does not support this. What is the best unit to make the connection into the regular AES inputs? (I.e. Deva/Fusion digtal ins, Sound Devices 744T, etc?)
  25. A great thing. Hopefully they will come out with more GBs on them soon.
