  1. Constantin: " Chosing that has no effect on the actual transmitting power, though " more angst... more cognitive dissonance... Oh, the humanity! If only you hadn't told him... the bliss could go on, and he might never have known the difference.
  2. speaking of patents: how about Mr. Olsen's: " A prolific inventor and engineer, Olson won more than 100 patents for the various types of microphones (including the widely used 44- and 77-series), cardioid (directional) microphones, loudspeaker baffles, air-suspension loudspeakers, isobaric loudspeakers, early video recording equipment, audio recording equipment, phonograph pickups, underwater sound equipment, noise reduction, sound technology in motion-pictures, and public-address systems he developed. " or Dr. Dolby's..? or Zippers...? Velcro... ?
  3. CK: " what does everyone charge for working Christmas " whatever they can get... you may ask for whatever you want to... (non-union) and of course, it depends.
  4. RN: " I cut my own from a phone protector that I chopped down to size... " I do this for a number of items that have screens...
  5. CK: " Does anyone know the technical differences between Wisycom MTP40S and MTP41? ...Are there any other differences? " yes, and could be... cognitive dissonance... web site...?
  6. my favorite budget short shotgun mic, typically for students, is the AT 897; they not only perform well, they hold up to the students (ab)use!
  7. ET: " and mounted on the wall. " at your new office ?
  8. THR: " when director Christopher Nolan admitted he deliberately mixed his dialogue lower than Zimmer's thunder-chords in key scenes, he may have endeared Interstellar to every living composer. " http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-why-interstellars-unorthodox-sound-751459?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=hollywoodreporter_therace&utm_campaign=THR%20Race%20Alerts_2014-11-28%2011%3A00%3A00_HLewis
  9. plain AL: " I do not recall Sennheiser threatening a lawsuit against the other interference tube microphone manufacturers " so..? Who said Sennheiser even invented the interference tube design ?? although Electro-Voice made several early dynamic interference tube mic's, it was actually RCA that controlled the original patents. ... Shure originally patented the single dynamic element cardioid microphone (aka uni-dyn) ... so..? Sennheiser, like lots of most companies patents its inventions, but there are a lot of factors you also may not recall: other companies often license the IP of their competitors, and patents expire.
  10. hi, and welcome...L7N: " Which mic is better to purchase for location sound I'll probably be doing more motion picture stuff. Ntg3 or Mkh416? " yes! before such a post, you probably should have looked around (searched) here...and found some of those 642 other posts! Bralle: " they still make the MD 421 and MD 21 (dynamic workhorses!) " the current versions are not the same as the originals (I believe the new versions carry a "mark 2" notation. I once sent in a badly trashed old MD-421, and the repair estimate was really astronomical, as they were basically going to rebuild me an original version from original parts. MD: " The guy is asking a genuine question!! " and you are not answering it...
  11. macw: " I don't see the Tascam as an infringement of zaxcom because... " this isn't about what you see... not at all. " are you saying eg. that a recorder built into a mixer should only be allowed to be made by the first manufacturer to market them? " no not at all... this is about inventors protecting their creations. reminder: Dan Dugan patented his auto-mixing inventions... in fact patent holders typically make a lot of their money by licensing their IP. Gerrard: " the essence and meat of the zaxcom patent " + " the key words in the patent award (for the sake of this discussion) are virtual and system. " how do you know you are looking at the correct patent ..? ET: " ...How that type of setup infringes on a patent is beyond comprehension. " while I don't believe that is exactly the issue, maybe it does infringe... that happens all the time, but the patent holder may not realize it; OTOH, when a big entity like TEAC/TASCAM introduces a significant new product at a major trade show, just an aisles away from the patent holder, and proudly shows it off to him... " All I asked for was a simple explanation based on my interpretation of the involved units. No one has bothered to offer any at all. " the parties involved , no doubt following their legal advice have chosen not to discuss this publicly, as they work the matters out. very typical. completely typical! plain AL: " How come we have so many microphones that look like a 416 ? " patents are not particularly about what something looks like... and, BTW: GD: " Plus apparently the 416 is being discontinued??? " Sennheiser has been in the process of discontinuing the 416 for ~20 years... (since the MKH-60/70) --and I see what you tried to do there, but it didn't work!
  12. FN: " The production should at least pay for a motel close to the set, me thinks. " many "proper" productions have been doing that since Brent Hirshberg's death plain AL: " I really hope you grow out using emoticons. " when JW removes them.
  13. Duffy: " the only people that benefit are the hourly paid Lawyers. " and that includes the lawyers on all sides! everyone else loses, although some more than others... SK: " it's unfortunate that so many in the states are disappointed that they cannot try this new product. " at least right away, and yes, that is an unfortunate (though certainly not life threatening) effect. meanwhile Philip keeps saying: " If "
  14. update TRESPASS : " Despite settling with the family of camera assistant Sarah Jones last week, Midnight Rider’s director and producer are still trying to escape the sights of rail company CSX. Randall Miller and Jody Savin today asked a Georgia court to dismiss them and their business entities from a cross-claim by CSX, whose remaining involvement in the ongoing civil suit filed by Jones’ family has kept the filmmakers tethered to the wrongful death case... Now that Miller and Savin have settled with Jones’ parents, they’re arguing that their lingering battle with CSX is “essentially a business dispute” that shouldn’t be tried together with the wrongful death claim. “... The filmmakers are asking to be dismissed from the civil cross-claim alongside Unclaimed Freight and Film Allman, LLC, and also to be legally protected from answering any orders of discovery for 90 days as the court considers their request for dismissal. They’ve also asked the court to stay any and all discovery until Miller and Savin’s criminal case is resolved next spring, “to protect Miller and Savin from the oppression that would otherwise occur.”. 15. mace: " Or is any recording device on a person's body, who also has a radio mic transmitter, a violation of their patent?" you need to study the devices and patents in question " That would be a very generous interpretation of the patent. " I'm sorry, did I miss something ? do you, in fact know what patent(s) is involved, specifically and exactly ?? what would you do if you were TASCAM/TEAC ?? for that matter, what would you be doing if you were ZAXCOM ?? " but a patent defence can have the useful effect of delaying the introduction of a product into a market, or making it not worthwhile to fight. " yes, it can, it is protection of the inventors' IP; and that is as it should be.
  16. Gerard: " it appears (without reading through the whole of the description)" sorry, but in order to be clear, the entire description(s) must be considered... and also other patents that Zaxcom controls, or has licensed must be included. philip: " I'm not ready to get over this, thanks. I'm curious to know what Zax thinks the infringement is, " you are of course free to be curious, but it is, at this point, completely between the parties. whatever it is, TEAC/TASCAM thinks it has enough merit to take the actions they feel are prudent and appropriate. " I sincerely hope the infringment in question is not over the fact of the DR being a mini battery-operated recorder that uses micro SD as media, because that would be ridiculous. " sorry, but there is a lot of disagreement there... the patent office considered what it awarded the patent for to be patentable, and they do not award a patent to everything that is applied for. there are numerous things that have been patented; just one example:superhetrodyne receivers and FM transmission and reception were originally patented by RCA. did you perhaps see the movie about intermittent windshield wipers ?? and keep in mind that the patent office does not enforce patents, that is done by the civil courts, and the policing is done by (or on behalf of) the patent holders.
  17. RPS: " Sadly, there are times I'd like the extra one or two channels on the Solice. " but you have a Solice..
  18. JD: " I've built a number of these for myself and crew members over the years. Its a great idea and fantastic that someone has commercialized it! " reading this comment immediately brought to my mind our discussion in another thread about patents!
  19. OS: " it must be software related " there are numerous other possibilities: they include operator error
  20. AR: " I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in the UK you can pay to licence radio mics with an output of up to 1000mW " I speculate that for the purpose of answering CK's question: " I'm mulling buying a 50mW wisycom or lectrosonics kit. My question is this. Will 50mW be strong enough to pick up from TX inside a car, and be picked up in another car following it reliably? " the higher power licenses are not really in consideration...
  21. Isn't one of our usual suspects opening a branch there ??
