  1. I've just tested the DVDram burner from the 744T as an external drive for Boom Recorder. I format the disk using utilities on the computer and Boom Recorder seems to be able write to it until I wait between rolls for about 5 minutes. Then if I hit record on Boom Recorder the red buffer wheel on Boom Recorder goes all the way around and then the whole computer hangs. Wondering if anyone here has had a similar situation? The burner works great with the 744T On it's own, writing to an external FW drive, Boom Recorder has never failed. Many Thanks, Patrick
  2. Take, As you know I am super happy with Boom Recorder. I like that you have made the patch bay squares a bit bigger. I guess I am similar to some other mixers in that we like Boom Recorder for it's ease of use and robust behavior. Changing Metadata after the fact is the only thing I can think of which might help me although I only needed it once on the last movie (out of two thousand "roll sound's"). Anything you add is a bonus to me. All the best, Patrick
  3. Itunes play through my cart speakers and usually it is the Pretty Department and Stand-ins listening. I try to keep a little distance between me and Video Village. To much tension over there. I like to chill as much as possible. Our Directors were late this morning so I played some Spa Music for the whole crew. We had a good laugh discussing the various types of spas we had seen around the world...I'm sure some others here might have a few stories!
  4. I like to roll from the Apple remote. I push 1 button and it pauses Itunes and rolls Boom Recorder. I push it again and we're back to the tunes and Boom Recorder is ready for the next take! OK, maybe it was a bit of a slow night... Wonderful work Take. We've got 5 shooting days left and it has perfomed flawlessly and as expected the analyzer has created quite a bit of interest. The Line Producer was was watching it dance around last night while he said "Birdie Num Nums' into the mic. Remember the movie?! Cheers, Patrick
  5. It works Take! Can I roll from my home if I'm too tired to go in??
  6. Man, I feel your pain. What a great post. The norm now seems to be 3 cameras, no waiting...I heard a funny story from our first AD about a DP we have both worked with who is notorious for "bring in another camera." Apparantly on SWAT he decided he could get a tow shot in a Limo with 6 actors as a oner. Many hours lighting, trying to blast through the tinted windows, 6 cameras, roll sound and...wait a minute the rig is too heavy. It didn't even budge. That was a wrap. Best to you Thomas. Keep the war stories coming. P.

    Who's doing what?

Shooting AVP2 in Vancouver on film. Recently wrapped "Deck The Halls". Always a three person crew except if it's really boring or late at night and we're tired. 744T and Boom Recorder with Dat backup. PR
  8. It sounds like you had 48K going in and 44.1 trying to be recorded. Likely that was the problem but I'm sure Take will chime in. It may also have to do with your clock source. How was your system set up? When I first set up my Boom Recorder I had the wrong clock source selected and I noticed it was a similar sound to what you described. My Motu is clocked to the 744 Spdif and Boom Recorder is also clocked to Spdif.
  9. i just spoke with Pierre at Sonosax. They shipped the miniR8 with my Mixer. (not sure if I will be able to use it on the next show). They ARE planning to do a rev which would allow it to record poly files but there are no plans to give it T.C. out. The internal T.C. system is more a reader than anything, he said. BTW the Sonosax Mixer has Word out along with it's AES outputs but I gather from Darren that the 744T will no longer work as a T.C. master if I DID try to use the AES in's from the Sonosax. Too bad. I think I will have to buy an external T.C. master generator for all the recorders and clock it to the AES on the Sonosax. Boom Recorder has a feature which puts a sound report showing scene and take info in to each folder generated during multi folder recordings. It opens in Safari but I am not sure how it can be used in post. The CSV file (which opens in Excel) is also included in each DVD burn. Regarding 48.048 we are lookiing in to it but there is still some confusion (on my part too) if with a film delivery if .048 is correct. The show is being cut on a FCP system. Thanks for the great q's and responses. I don't know where I'd be without this site!
  10. Just a quick note. I'm not feeding digital audio in to the 744T, only analog.
  11. Hooked up the 744T, Motu, and Boom Recorder on the MacBook 2 gig. Used the spdif out from the 744T and everything sounded great. 10 tracks with 2 spare on the 744T, no waiting. Burned a DVD on the Mac Book while I recorded 10 tracks of poly files to an external Maxtor one Touch 111 and recorded the dailies mix backup on the 744T. Thanks Take and Darren for the info. I guess I could surf the Net at the same time too! I don't start my next show til the end of Sept., so I will keep testing the system and sending test DVD's to post. BTW, Fox has asked for 24bit 48K DVD-R dailies delivery. Two folders, one with a two track poly consistng of my mono mix and seperate radio's only mix. the other folder would contain a poly 8 track pre fader. Also spoke to a local sound mixer yesterday. He's doing a Pierce Brosnen picture. He was asked by Post to have everyone wired all the time! Pierce declined the obviously OTT idea and told the mixer to have post call him if there was a problem. The mixer was happy...
  12. I am planning on using the 744T as a master TC to feed the Motu Ultralight which in turn outputs to Boom recorder. I am also using the 744T to output a two track dailies mix to the Motu's SPDIF input. I was hoping to use the AES outs from my Sonosax to generate the dailies mix into the 744T and use the analog outs from the Sonosax directly to the Motu for the splits. Are there clocking issues which I am missing? I spoke with Sound Devices about my plan and they said there are no latency issues but I didn't ask them specifically about word clock. I haven't got my Sonosax back from Switzerland yet to test the AES outs but the rest of the setup seems to be working fine. Thanks, Patrick
  13. I have been reading the R8 (french) manual as best I can. It can record stereo pairs. or mono only . On the mixer, I am only having them do certain of the Trew audio mods. I like having 4 XLR aux outs and I'm having no problem working with a 25 pin return. I also don't mind the center detent on the pots. With the headroom on the new mixer I don't do any "two handed" mixing any more. I have asked Sonosax if it is possible to use the analogue ins on the R8 as tracks 9 and 10. Either mixed to the HD or to the CF card. I'm finding 8 iso tracks is a good # to work with. I agree that the channel mutes are important. I don't want to spend all day arming and unarming tracks. The most important mod is to alow easy switching of track assignments and have them either pre or post fader.
  14. Here's our answer to those pesky planes flying over. We had some guy circling so we sent him a message!
  15. I have the Sonosax ST8D prewired for the internal recorder. I will use the Mini R8 until the internal Recorder is ready. I am sending the St8D back to Sonosax monday for the "North American" mods. Our next show doesn't start til late Sptember so I may leave the mixer at Sonosax for a bit if they think they can get the internal recorder installed. I have been a Sonosax user for 18 years and I must say the sonic quality of the ST8D is really something. We actually found ourselves using the boom in some shots where previously we would have wired the actors. I'm a bit worried about the Metadata with the Sonosax recorder. I'm thinking that we will deliver the dailies on the cf card with minimal metadata and use Boom Recorder/Metacorder for burning multi track DVD's. I really try to keep things streamlined because it can go nuts so quickly on set these days. Still working out the T.C. set up. On another note, the Sanken CS3E has been very good at rejecting the ritter fans blowing snow, distant traffic and we get an extra few seconds before I have to tell the Director "The plane is on the track".
  16. Just got an email from Sonosax. Apparently my Minir8 recorder will be shipped Aug 14th. Anyone else order/have one yet?
  17. My 8 track mono files seem to be importing into pro tools fine, and as we're just about to finish this movie I'm going to use my prep. time on the next one to "lock in" a delivery which works for editing and audio post. My biggest wish is for a Mac programme which can view/change Metadata after the tracks are recorded. Have I missed a thread somewhere where this is discussed? I've read about BWF widget, but I don't think it will do all of this. BTW, I've had 7 radios and three cameras (and new dialogue, overlaps and ad libs) to deal with on many of our shots this past month and having Boom Recorder (even with the occasional missed ID has probably saved some lines from being looped. We strive for that perfect mix for dailes, but things are just getting a little crazy out there!
  18. I took them up on the offer of a free room. 10 minute drive instead of 1.5 hours. Amazing what 8 hours of decent sleep will do. Even with the minimum (10 hours) turnaround and 14+ hour days (nights).
  19. Not exactly a sound issue but the special effects coordinator on our show didn't come to work friday because he fell asleep at the wheel thursday and totalled his new F250 truck. The police said if it wasn't for the size of his truck and the airbags he wouldn't have made it. The Producer, who up to this point has been a very unpleasant person to the whole crew has offered free rooms to any crew who have a long drive home. I can't remember the # of stories like this I have heard over the years. Feel free to add yours. I'm sure there are many more.
  20. Thanks Scott. I've emailed Take. And on a side note, Kudo's to Jeff yourself and all the posters on this site. I've been a mixer for many years and still remember the Post Supervisor at Cannell Films calling me with specific instructions NOT to split tracks."One track only, there's no time to deal with two". My how times have changed....And thanks to Darren Brisker for his knowledge about Metaflow
  21. I've started testing boom recorder and we are trying to import the files into Avid. For some reason it can imprt one file but cannot put all 8 together. I have set the boom recorder up to create 8 files and 1 folder. Is there a "standard" method of setup. I've got a mono mix one 1 and then split out radios on the other 7. I must say, I'm a late adopter of the non linear format. I've been waiting for a year and a half for the 8 track internal recorder for my Sonosax ST8D and I'm starting to wonder if it will ever happen. In the meantime I'm trying not to spend too much on another system. Many Thanks, Patrick
