  1. I'm noticing that there is only a TC input, so no jamming external devices, unless I'm missing something, Also since the the headphone knob is multifunctional for menu scrolling and selecting in menu mode it seems it would be one of those never ending encoder dials. It also has a small db display in the lower right hand corner indicating your level. I like feeling where full counter clockwise is myself. But I'll get over it.

  2. Thanks everyone for the excellent input. It is an attached garage to a small commercial space so I think my initial temperature variation predictions are probably a bit off. I do have the ability to store some gear indoors so I'll probably do so with selected particular items like the ones suggested. And when it comes to taking things home, when I get the 664 I'll probably have that next to my pillow at night for at least the first month or so :-)

  3. So I'm moving my gear to a new location and the workflow of the space gives me some new equipment storage options. The type of gear is anything and everything you may find in a production sound kit. I'm considering storing my gear in a non temperature controlled garage. I believe i've covered all my bases as far as security and dust but my main concern is the possible affects of temperature variations and if this is a concern. It could be as low as 15 degrees to high 90's. Thanks for your input.

  4. I truly don't understand all the Sven hate. I think it's a very creative solutionfor setting configurations on a digital/analog hybrid machine with no screen to look at. It sure beats looking at the cheat sheet every time! It's a huge time saver if you ask me.

Anyway, back to the 664 talk! :)

+1, useful and cool sounding IMO

  5. Having both the 702t and 552 myself I like this idea for a must have 4 iso situation, however I would def run my aes b out of the 552 to the 702t to avoid the extra a/d conversion. I typically use the 552 as back up only recorder when feeding the primary source which gives me that extra layer of insurance

  6. Just got done from doing production mixing for a 48 hour film this past weekend and haven't worked on one of these since 2006. As usual the hours were grueling, but it was so much fun at the same time. I was on a great team in Atlanta, learned a lot and found a lot of satisfaction to sit in on the mix with Curt Bush at White Dog here in Atlanta. I also was able to get stereo ambiences for every scene that I delivered to the film mixer right before the mix which added a whole other dimension to each scene. And the best part is that we were at a beautiful horse ranch in the North Georgia so the sounds were very natural and beautiful.

  7. . Going to shows was tough because we really wanted to talk about the exciting hardware we were working on.

I love SD, I wouldn't change my 552, or 702t one but. It sounds and feels incredible. It's obvious how well SD thinks through there product design, implementation and there incredible commitment to their existing product line support from a hardware and software stand point.

Thinking of a 788-SSD but trying my best to hold off, thinking something's coming soon. I can feel it :) Probably will get an MM1 next another 411 / SMQV to hold me off for a bit. Thank god for understanding wives, with this gear acquiring habit of mine.

  8. So after dropping myi iPhone 4 and watching it bounce at least a few times on concrete steps, i damaged the audio input hardware inside the phone ( which I find ironic ) . So after trying some work arounds it became clear to me that I would need to do the dreaded trip to the apple store where apparently service is no longer necessary, because there is an app for that too. On arrival, the gentleman in the blue shirt who was inquiring about my visit informed me that I could exchange it buy purchasing at a reduced rate. I said great lets do it, and he said i would need to make an appointment, and I could make that appointment on an a app on my phone. I said well why don't we just do it now and he informed me once again that I would need an appointment. Never mind as i looked around there were at least six employees standing around with clip boards. It became apparent to me then that these guys were not customer service associates, they are in fact apple product and policy informants and enforcers designed to move you along in the appropriate direction. And since I drank the macintosh koolaid, many years ago. I'll be back on Sunday at noon once again giving them my business.

  9. Wow ! Thanks for the quick and professional response Charlie ! This is what I absolutely love about dealing with companies like yours. Incredible commitment and service. No worries at all, I'm still very excited about this slate and am looking forward to integrating into my set up. I'll give you guys a ring tomorrow.

  10. So I was very excited to receive my new Denecke TS-C slate today and noticed a annoying high pitched whining type oscillator noise coming from the slate only when the backlit display is illuminated. I thought this may have been low batteries, so i changed those and no luck. If the backlit is turned off or the clapper is closed it goes away, I read through the paperwork and searched around the net and couldn't find anything on it. I'm not real familiar with this slate so am I missing something, or does this slate have a problem and possibly need repair?

  11. One thing I've noticed on JWS (especially, recently) is that there is no lack of knee-jerk reactions.

Sound Devices is firmly established in our industry and that isn't going to change overnight. Yes, Zaxcom came out with a gamechanger in the Nomad. But, I agree with Tom, the development cycle on products is longer than most people here would realize.

All of Sound Devices current audio products are still viable and work extremely well for their intended purposes. But, with the excitement (and even controversy) that some of the recent innovative products have precipitated, there seems to be a voracious appetite for more stimulation, more adrenaline-producing devices -- another "fix."

I would remind everyone that most of what we do is about our abilities rather than our gear. And I would also remind everyone that the best companies are those that meet our needs well, after the sale as well as before. In the support department, Sound Devices holds an enviable position near the top of the list.

I just think that in a knee-jerk furor, Sound Devices is being a bit unfairly chastised.

This is coming from someone who likes his new toys as well as anyone, and who owns, and appreciates, products from both of the above-mentioned companies (as well as many, many others).

...Back to our regularly scheduled salivating.

  12. The black box may be perfect for my cart based live production / filming client, were currently using a pro tools rig which takes up to much space and this would eliminate that all together simplifying setup as well. I'd probably go with tos link out versions, to work with our 01v96 per fade direct outs.....tos link version does not include loop back would be cool but over kill for our needs, I really like app idea for levels as a 3 step led leaves a bit to be desired.

  13. I got fitted by an audiologist for the custom ear plugs made by a company called Sensaphonics. Was only 180 for the molds + a custom set at 15db reduction. I also ordered a 25db filter since they are interchangeable, for an additional 80. Ironically they just came in yesterday so I'm picking them up this afternoon. I've got many uses in mind for these things. Also be weary of doing this with anyone besides an audiologist. Your ears may need professional cleaning due to excessive wax build up inside your ear canal and this can become lodged against your ear drum when molds are taken. An audiologist will check for this and clean first if necessary.

  14. I can say from personal experience you should say no to CC or small loans ! They are not a good idea ever. My personal rule for gear is if I can't buy it out right, i don't get it. Work as hard as you can to save up, you'll appreciate your purchase more that way.

Also the cost of rental can easily be reimbursed when taking a gig, just figure it in to your rate in a way that makes sense for you and the client. Do your research and spend some time building a relationship with a rental house negotiating rates before the call for the gig comes in. I rented all my equipment for the occasional location sound gigs ( besides headphones ) for the first 5-6 years before I invested in kit.

  15. Def plus mix, maybe a simple record-arm LED on each track, I agree that joystick is not ideal, but to change we would probably have to give up something else on front panel which I wouldn't be a fan of personally.
