  1. That's my fault, gotten used to calling most bag work "ENG gigs" even when it's nothing like news gathering (commercials etc).
  2. As a 552/744 user on ENG gigs, I do gladly admit I'd prefer the 664. Simpler, lighter, much more pragmatic. I'm considering it. But to follow on from Olle and Justin, there's no way I'll give up my 744 for effects recording. I was really hoping Sound Devices had a 4xpreamp 744t with a CL-9 style attachment up their sleeve, but that's just me wanting one small unit that will do everything I possibly want. *those first-world problems*
  3. Wonderful looking piece of gear, with great features. The only downfall for me is the lack of higher sample rates. Is that a possibility in a firmware update? (lower available record tracks for 96 or 192 capability perhaps?) Or is the unit itself not possible of going above 48k?
  4. Two significant upgrades from the 552 that I can see in the specs, They've upgraded the A/D conversion from 105db to 114db (now has the same dynamic range as a 744) The preamps are now transformerless, possibly the same preamps in the 7-series recorders? EDIT: I see nothing mentioning high sample rates...hmmm
  5. My dream, a 744t MKII (or 844t perhaps?) 2 extra preamps for a total of 4 fully capable inputs (with AES42 capability on all) Capable of recording Mix + 4 Iso's CL-8 style attachment CL-Wifi compatible 192khz capable Exact same limiters as 744 (fixed, available at any sample rate) Improved A/D conversion from 788 USB 2.0/3.0 + Firewire 400/800 SSD version I would buy on day one.
  6. We have two SX-EX64's where I work. I think they use the same pres as the SX62R? They're very good, but I couldn't give a comparison.
  7. Recorded this last year. Schoeps MK21 pair in a sort of hybrid A-B / ORTF setup straight into a 744t. Solo Piano pieces in the second half is MK2S A-B, far end of piano with the MK21 pair against the stage wall, high up. Interviews, MKH8060. https://vimeo.com/29926788 Final mix has no EQ and a very small amount of compression.
  8. It's worth noting that Sound Devices Mixers and Recorders use different preamps. Their mixers use Lundahl transformer based preamps while their recorders use discrete preamps. Their recorders have better A/D conversion than on the 552 as well. There is a page on the Sound Devices website which goes into detail about this : http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/general/552-or-7-series/

    788t Limiters

You're correct, they're still analogue, the limiting happens pre-A/D. Just digitally controlled, which is what allows them to be adjustable. But I'd take the fixed/non-adjustable 744 limiters over that any day for them to work at 96khz.

    788t Limiters

It's because they are digitally controlled (still pre A/D). Not enough processing power to run them while recording at 96khz. I'd really love a 788t that had fixed analogue limiters like all other 7-series recorders so that there would be no such drawback.
  11. Cheers for this, Marc. This is good timing for me as I'll be sending scratch track to a 5d (usually don't send one) for the first time on Thursday/Friday so I'll be sure to avoid that jack. Sound Devices actually have a great page about running sound to a 5d. It includes what kind of specs/performance you can expect and how to get the best dynamic range / lowest noise possible on the scratch track you send. I was invited to their 4k screening here in Florida last month, the staff were really cool guys. The main rep gave a speech about the 5d outlining what you mentioned above, interesting stuff.
  12. ^ Movieslate already supports Timecode Buddy's Wifi TC as well. Big things happening.
  13. well well well... Was listening back to some dialogue I recorded for a commercial the other day, noticed a low-level hissing sound on the MKH8060 track. Definitely not the noise floor of the mic itself, I did a test where I level matched it with several other mics which all supposedly have higher A-Weighted noise levels. None of them had this hissing sound present, and NTG-1 sounded quieter by comparison...so something's definitely wrong. Looks like it'll be going back to the mothership a second time (though this one is a replacement of the previous), will call Sennheiser tomorrow. The MKH8040 is still perfectly fine though, at least that's a plus.
  14. Anything coming out of a regular main output is still in it's analogue form. It's probably better to let the 702 do the conversion, it's A/D section has better specs.
  15. The recorder records whatever is routed to "AES A". It can be any of the following, • Left, Right Program • Inputs 1, 2 Pre-Fade • Inputs 1, 2 Post-Fade • Inputs 3, 4 Pre-Fade • Inputs 3, 4 Post-Fade • Input 5 Pre-Fade, Left Program • Input 1 Pre-Fade, Left Program • Input 1 Pre-Fade, Left/Right Mono Program So I think what Jim has done it route 1,2 (pre-fade) to AES A and then run 3,4 direct outs to the 702t. I think as long as the AES digital output itself isn't turned on, there will still be the regular 5-channel mix coming out of any of the outputs. That's the only way I can think of getting 4 iso's and still having a full mix leaving the 552.
  16. The Senatorism's are running rampant! Eric is spot on. Send what sounds best. Commercial I worked this morning was a 1 talent shoot, lav'd him and ran the boom too. Framing was tight and I could get the boom in close, so off it went to camera (had it been too wide, would have sent the lav). Both iso's on a recorder as well.
  17. Really good review, Matt. Thanks for taking the time. Definitely preferred the 416 myself.
  18. Have we lost him....or has he lost us? This is "very subjective". Has someone asked our "usual suspects" of his whereabouts? They don't work on commission!
  19. Both my brand new MKH8060 and MKH8040 had severe issues and had to be sent back. Thankfully both of mine have been back with me now for several months with no issues (8060 replaced, 8040 repaired). The 8000 series are all gorgeous sounding mics with impressively low noise, but I do agree that they should consider a recall if issues like this are still popping up after brand new purchases.
  20. I'd say try running a line level signal on it, or another (3rd) mic if you have one. Just to be sure.
  21. Of course, yet what is up there can harmonically affect what is in the human voice range. Does anyone know what the price will be around? EDIT: Nevermind, says it in the video "549 USD".
  22. Very unusual freq response. It takes a big dive at 10k.... Can't think of another shotgun that does this. What also makes me raise an eyebrow is that they don't list the equivalent noise level which is one of the first things I like to know. Just my idle speculation though, would still love to hear it
