  1. Here's a link to that great 1991 Fresh Air interview with Leiber and Stoller. 20 minutes. Download or stream. Transcript available tomorrow: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/26/139967351/jerry-leiber-remembering-one-of-rocks-great-songwriters
  2. Best story about Steve Jobs I've seen: ==== Vic Gundotra - Aug 24, 2011 (edited) - Public Icon Ambulance One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore. After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said. ==== Rest of the not-too-long anecdote here: https://plus.google....sts/gcSStkKxXTw
  3. Hmmm... I heard 5%, and that seems to be about where it is now: http://www.nasdaq.com/aspxcontent/ExtendedTradingTrades.aspx?selected=AAPL&mkttype=after Tomorrow? Who knows... At iPhone 5 announcement? Then it will start to get interesting... But you know, he's been out on leave for 2011...
  4. Lieber and Stoller gave a great interview to Terry Gross on Fresh Air (US public radio program) several years ago. It's not available online right now, but I'd guess the program will re-run the interview sometime this week. It will probably be available for streaming here: http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13 They come off as nice (and of course talented) guys.
  5. I'm fearing the day I see one of these in the field: Delvcam Triple-Tree 3 Accessory Shoe Mount for DSLR & Other Video Cameras Instantly Add 3 More Accessory Shoe Mounts to Any Camera! More info here: http://www.markertek...ELV-3TREE.xhtml
  6. My guess is that Shure got just the design they wanted. Of course they've seen Lectro, Zax, and other systems. Shure probably thought, "Do we want to fight for thousands of users or millions of users?" For a DSLR or burritocam user, the Shure screen location might be better than the bag-friendly screen/panel we like. Bummer for us... or maybe we'll see a different RX around AES, IBC, or NAB... hey wait: Check out this 10/50/100mW Shure TX from the same line: http://www.shure.com/americas/products/wireless-systems/uhfr-systems/ur1-wireless-bodypack-transmitter
  7. Richard, thanks for the link. You know, I don't feel so sorry for the guy. If the $20,000 budget minus the $7000ish in crowd/fan funding is about right, then the guy spent $13,000 over two years (or so). He could have easily spent that on music equipment and gigging, a couple bicycles, (part of) a motorcycle, (part of) a nose job, farmers market veggies, or all sorts of things. There's been a growing split between professional production and hobby production. I really see it in documentary (where I do a lot of work). We've long seen this in music. DSLRs are the new Les Pauls. Lots of people have them, some can use them well, few make a living with them. That's all good as long as the people buying and learning to use the cameras and guitars accept that. Reminds me of an aphorism that doesn't directly apply here but that I like: A guy who buys a camera is a photographer. A guy who buys a violin is a guy with a violin.
  8. How about a tiny built-in two-track recorder that you control via bluetooth/wi-fi and a smartphone or tablet? Jim "since I don't have to build it, why not?" Feeley
  9. Jon, I did a quick search but don't think I found what you found. Is it the "rock the batt" tip Brian C suggests in this thread? http://bit.ly/reRIUp Thanks --Jim
  10. Ya, that's a nice development. Countryman has something similar on their new B2D lav. Saw it at NAB; looked solid: I asked if we would see this as an option for other Countryman lavs. Chris answered, but I don't recall exactly what he said so I won't post possibly inaccurate info here. --Jim
  11. My friend Steve Hullfish grew a small email riff of his into this: FCP X Mission Control Parody Steve Hullfish | 07/27What if Cupertino was “Houston?” Astronaut: Cupertino, we have a problem. It seems that ten years of costly space flight training has gone up in smoke. None of the switches here in the space shuttle seem to do anything. Cupertino: Switches are an antiquated control paradigm. Astronaut: OK, that’s cool, but we’re trying to dock to the International Space Station in three minutes. Cupertino: Docking isn’t really supported with the new space shuttle. Rest of the transcript here: <http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/shullfish/story/fcp_x_mission_control_parody/>
  12. Thanks Rich. Doesn't sound so bad. I'll order some up and get soldering. --Jim
  13. Rich, what do you mean by "very interesting connector to solder"? Difficult? Clever? Other? Thanks! Jim
  14. You said, "A 30% tax increase on an industry like the airlines will result in a 30%+ increase in the price of a ticket." I don't think that factors in the influence of price elasticity of demand and supply on tax incidence. Also, are you assuming that taxes make up the entire cost of a ticket? Isn't it just one part of overhead costs? At any rate, that's all theory. Can you provide some real-world examples of the cost of goods going up in direct proportion to a rise corporate tax rate?
  15. Interesting. Can you point us to some examples of that?
  16. Crud. I meant to say FCP 7 works with Lion. Sorry for my confusion.
  17. FCPX does work with Lion. Not that I can use FCP X for any of my work... at least, not yet... Jim
  18. Smaller operation here, but I use the pelican CF cases, too. Room for labels, but also have black cases for empty cards and black cases with some orange paint for full cards and labels saying so. Helps control entropy a little...
  19. You know, I think in many cases a big chunk of the audience will know the difference. They may not be able to describe or articulate the difference, but at some level they notice.
  20. Strikes me that the s ame can be said about many bands, no?
  21. I like my MixPre (labeled as a Shure FP24), but in addition to the benes mentioned above (NB: mic & line I/O +AES O), the MixPre-D has much less-coarse metering (16 segment on the D vs 7 on the non-D). The original MixPre is a useful utility mixer with some limitations. The MixPre-D looks like a good all-around tiny mixer. http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mixpre-d.htm http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mx2master.htm I'd go with the D, personally.
  22. Is anyone else having this issue? I click on the "View New Content" button on the upper-right part of the main page, and I'm shown some---but not all---of the posts made since my last visit (I usually visit the group 0.5x to 2x per day). But sometimes, in fact more often than not, the discussions that show up in the "Additional Content" sidebar do not appear in the page generated when I click "View New Content." What's up with that? Is there anything I can do? Is it some odd IP.Board problem? Something else? Thanks -Jim
