    Sennheiser XSW

Any idea how many can be used at simultaneously? I'm guessing it's not possible to pair 1 TX to 2 or more RX(?) but 1 could use 2, 3 or even 4 sets to send scratch to several cams.
  2. And both good recorders to have in the back up bag after upgrading to something more high end.
  3. Dalton's pet carrier for some security and structure; placed as 'brick' amongst straw bales used for diffusion, cover and disguise. Maybe a 'table' to get the construction off the floor as straw is food for a lot of animals.
  4. Very nice. Hydra? MCR54? Is possible to post pics of how you fixed this to MiniX3 I'm guess through the orange body when not populated. I like the way you continue to use the same 'button hole' (sony) style strap.
  5. +1 For me, MKH50 is more versatile than the 8050 as it's easier to shock mount, wind protect and HPF lets you use it with I/Ps without bass cut. 8050 is smaller but needs more by way of shock mount, wind protection and the HPF is extra.
  6. I think the 8060 will be too directional (wont sound 'natural') but worth a try - if you can afford to hire both 8060 and 8050s mount the 8050s on the 8060s and compare the results in post. I was thinking of a binaural pair under the sheet (technically a spaced pair of omnis if positioned there and wouldn't get too much breathing from either person) but if the 'contributor' has them in the ears they will be even closer to the action. What ('in-shot') binaurals are you using? If I understand you correctly, a mix of stereo tracks would involve balancing 1 set of stereo tracks against the other in terms EQ, level and timing (if not positioned at the same distance) from the source. If the audience are primarily using headphones then you need to use decent headphones for the mix. BTW the framing of the 1st picture (face massage) wont match the stereo sound field. The image plane is almost perpendicular to the sound field.
  7. The subject matter is very ASMR. A lot of ASMR i checked, the mics are part of the look. I would try a number of approaches (if you don't want the mics in shot): ~ If the camera/s are locked off, capture a 'clean plate' and paint the mics out. ~ Use more than 1 stereo pair. eg an in ear binaural set or on the shoulder under the hair in the 'brushing shot' and under the sheet for the face massage (fur between the mic and sheet will help limit any fabric noise). If you like the 8050s go with those. 8040s better for a stereo ambience (or at least a wider stereo field) – ASMR is more like stereo spot effects.
  8. "as you can't be right next to the recorder itself" Trying understand why this is. 360 VR puts everything in the environment on camera including the recorder and/or cables used so requiring practical or digital techniques to hide them – is an extendable cable (from mic to recorder) not easier to hide than the recorder and easier to extend than BT range? I suppose 1 could use a combination of all the above techniques to get 1self over the horizon or into the next door building etc.
  9. First of all sympathies for the situation you were put in. I think for the most part you have done the right thing, which in the moment can be tricky. I am not so sure about this bit though: "At the end of the day I told the director I cannot be a part of this production if they won't adhere to their policy, and I had lost trust that they were willing to enforce it so they should rent another audio kit and I would train someone else on set to do it (student productions...) So I did that the next day and enforcement lapses continued. I ended the day and the director understood that I would be leaving though I'm sort of dumbfounded by how they'd rather lose a major component of the crew then make people wear masks. Aside from them essentially breaking a contract with you by not adhering to a policy which they said they would and underestimating the value of the Sound as a "major component" – training some else to do it is for me, not putting enough distance between your concern for public health and production's irresponsible behaviour. If it were just about the well being of those on set it would be questionable but in this context it goes beyond this. Eg it's less about the willing colleague you trained getting ill but more the potential for them to go on to infects others. Of course a tricky situation and I'm really not trying to have go at you for the sake of it. Regards.
  10. Clever. If it were marketed only as a 'BT enabled connector/adapter' (and the usage was determined by the user) why would it? <– moot point. As I inferred from Jeff's comment below, Zaxcom is not the only wireless system available in the US with remote control (eg Sony and A10). How would this work with more than 1 device? I'm sure you could sell some – enough to make it worth while, even in this moment, is another thing though. Is there a risk of inducing interference with the audio when the circuitry is miniaturised and squeezed physically closer to the audio signal.
  11. But what is that opposite direction? What is the opposite of recording speech for picture?🤔

    First Film

I ask this in the most humble way as i sometimes find myself on jobs with less than experienced creatives: Is there are chance this is not just your first film but also the director's and the producers' first film too and they don't really know what they are asking for? I can imagine Camera department may have their concerns too but then thought to themselves it will be worse for Sound, let Sound manage the directors expectations (ie risk pissing them off). Aside from the extra time, crew and difficulty, 23 wires are going to cost a fair bit. Factor in some redundancy and a prep day this is over $4000 just on wireless rental. If you can cut a deal with the rental people and get a percentage then definitely say YES,') Ah, I just remembered even if it's not everyone talking at the same time in 1 long take etc – if there are to be 23 different people mic'd in a day you will need to have (23) separate belt packs and lavs assigned to each cast member on the day. Still a nice earner and potentially not so hard on frequency coordination. Cost, time and difficulty making a good case for painting the booms out - have you suggested this?
  13. Thanks for sharing this Constantin. So no point in even trying sanitise gloves (with isopropyl) just wear a new pair for each wiring? Is production supplying all the PPE being used by you and your department? I can imagine it is even trickier to do a quickly adjust of a noisy placement now – have you changed much in the way personal mics are being worn? Is anyone taking temperatures?
  14. 633 still handles most small jobs well and is now relatively affordable S/H Brilliant products with unique and innovative workflow - especially if you're ready to totally commit to such ecosystem and have c.12k for Nova + QRX212 + 2x ZMT3(?). Bang for buck, the 4 channel Wisycom RX is going to be hard to beat though, as they can be paired with so many brands of TX and have such a wide switching BW - running 1 of these (or even a 2 channel model MPR52 / MCR42) with some modest G3/4 TX at the beginning and hire or invest in better TX as you need or find, going along. Ergonomically my 633 is better than a MixPre ii series but these now have (1 channel of ) Noise Assist which the 633 will never get ,'( so i think 1 of these (6/10) would be my first stepping stone now if the 8 series or Nova were a step too far in these unpredictable times. Of course it's very generous of Glenn to reach out to you and I'm sure a conversation with him will be beneficial to you whatever you decide to do.
  15. Excellent gloves. Still need to keep them clean.
  16. You're right - I AM WRONG. Spent some time discussing this with an American friend today. According to his father in law (working in the field), if 80% of US citizens wear a mask the virus will be eradicated in the US. For the record again, I had/have no beef with wearing a mask and was NOT saying we shouldn't wear them - my opinion was, for work in potentially virally loaded environments, masks alone are not sufficient protection for individuals or community. For the interests of public information I am willing to delete or edit my previous posts or leave them up as an examples erroneous theory and bad analogy?
  17. Expletives and hysteria aside, if an aspirant commuter cyclist finds it hard to sit on a bike without falling from it, there many training resources available to manage the risks involved better than wearing 200 grams of polystyrene and hoping this is the fix. Sorry to be pedantic, but falling from your bike, crashing your bike and being crashed into by someone else are quite different things, conflating the 3 will make risk assessment and management unreliable at best. c. 1992 when masks started to marketed to cyclists - I researched what was required to filter fumes from traffic air as opposed to particles. It is possible to filter both but the equipment required is so bulky you need a car to transport it. I also found out that traffic fumes were actually more harmful to drivers than cyclists in urban areas because the car fills up with the same gases as those outside, the driver and passengers (if any) then sit in the fumes and with less cardio-vascular activity the toxins remain in their system longer and in most cases drivers will also spend longer in the environment than a cyclist. The snood has alway been about being a bit on the skinny side and feeling the cold and wind easily, especially when setting off. BTW is your doctor sister wearing a mask outside work? I know 5 doctors, 4 of which have been front line in treating covid patience (which entails wearing full PPE), none of them have been wearing masks outside of work but they have practiced responsible social distancing, mostly been regularly tested and have a good understand of the risks. Cycling safely (for transport) involves a lot more than wearing helmet. Going back to work will involve a lot more than me and colleagues wearing a possibly contaminated piece of fabric on our faces. Realistically something like Codyman's experience of being tested on the day. I'm guessing UK police forces have been doing something like this because I never see them either socially distancing OR wearing masks. https://images.app.goo.gl/CBfaK766gvj3dex49
  18. You have a few more years on me with your cycling - i'm only 50 ,'). But I think we would agree cycle sport (I used to TT) is different from cycling as a mode of transport in the same way as commuter driving should be different from driving in the Indi500, F1 and the Paris Dakar. And sorry for labouring the analogy and risking further censure but sports cycling IS closer (than commuter cycling) to working frontline against Covid as medical and care staff ie. its an risky pursuit/environment so take all measure available so you can take the risks required to do the job (especially in the context of essential workers or getting round the corner a bit quicker for a podium finish if you like, hence compulsory helmets in UCI events). Commuting and day to day living and working (as non essential workers) in this time are in their way comparable in the sense that getting to work and making films might be essential for ones personal economic survival but can't be considered essential in the way medical care and pandemic response are for the survival of our broader communities so the question is less how should we take this risk but more why would we take this risk.
  19. You're talking like you think the countries that have out performed US and UK with regard their Covid response did so purely by making people wear masks. They did make people wear masks and I don't have a problem with wearing a mask. But I disagree with people thinking by just doing this we can all go back to business. US and UK gov been criminally negligent to their populations with their response. Delaying lockdowns, vague and confusing messaging, inadequate medical provision. You see the stats - it's not all down to who wears a mask.
  20. 😱 It might have been a bad analogy - comparing helmets and masks but re helmets: show me a manufacturer of bicycle helmets that says they will protect you in a collision with another vehicle - most informed people concerned in cycle safety in the UK consider proper training, risk assessment and responsible road use by all parties to be more useful than a couple of hundred grams of polystyrene strapped (often badly) to the head. When Australia made it compulsory to wear cycle helmets there was no reduction is serious head injuries - thats after many years and millions of miles cycled. Re Covid: We are wearing masks as required but we are not kidding ourselves this is going to make a significant difference - I am not in the camp of protesting about my civil liberties being at stake (which I guess you think I am). Uk gov T&T is all over the place and far from anything practiced in Korea for example. If only road safety and pandemic response were as simple as some cheap items of PPE with a high variance of how 'well' they are worn and used - which was my point with the analogy. I'll re-iterate this for you. We have been highly diligent beyond official requirements (we all got tested when told 1 of us should) and have first hand experience of how serious the illness is. We observed general lockdown and now personal SI. We understand the need to get economies running again but personally prefer more caution from our government.
  21. I think masks are in some ways equatable with bicycle helmets. They look like they may do something but when you dig into to it - not so much. In the context where the helmet is relevant, the brain still whacks the inside of the skull at speed causing concussion but the helmet will stop superficial damage to soft tissue on the outside and wont protect the rest of the body from an impact with another vehicle. In theory the mask will stop some aerosols from spreading from you (which is good) but for your own protection as soon as you are in an environment where it may be relevant, you need to handle your mask as a potential source of C19. The inside for others and the outside for yourself. In medical settings PPE is not reused and is put on and taken off in controlled environments. If you are taking your mask on and off through the day and putting it a pocket/bag for use latter then the inside is now like the outside and vice versa. But it does look the part and I guess some of us will need to wear these when we start cramming back into small spaces to travel to work, change location and "get the shot". 1 of my kids tested positive at the beginning of the week, the rest of us didn't - we are now all self isolating (and we are all in good health 🤞 and under house arrest for only 5 more 'sleeps'). Medical advisors are NOT saying it's ok to go out - so long as you wear a mask. I guess someone reading this might think - the result is the outcome of not wearing a mask but putting a 3 y.o in a mask and expecting it to be placed effectively all day is being hopefully at best. My take out from the experience is we need clear, consistent, unambiguous reporting and protocols from our so called leaders, across all settings and institutions (the school and nursery went about things very differently). Thorough testing. And healthcare systems with the capacity to treat large numbers of people of all classes. There also seems to be some game theory in play with regard our economies, antibody testing and a vaccine but I'm not sure I can articulate this better than this at the moment. Good luck to us all especially state side, things sound even worse there than it was here.
  22. The Dalton Trumbo story was really interesting and the way it brought about the demise of the 'Blacklist' was really quite funny. My favourite 'improperly used mic' film is 'Blow Out'. Most of the examples given so far have mics pointed in the wrong direction but mostly in suspensions and wind protection. In Blow Out, Travolta points the mic in the right direction but his fingers do all the suspension in windless exteriors. Certainly get 'A' full bodied wind effect for his producer - if not 1 we'd be proud of. But there's the Lav mic scene - and who us hasn't felt like improperly using a lav in such a way at some point ,') https://images.app.goo.gl/XZz9W6coeiA7oVo67
  23. The laws of 'Diminishing Returns' and 'Marginal Gains' apply. Lectro and Wisy RX conveniently allow operators to use higher powered Lectro TX when circumstances allow for and require such.
