  1. thanks for all the comments guys.  I need to draft a document for production to read so they will at least know *why* we need to be treated as a rental.  It seems that the newer UPMs, Production Coordinators, and accountants are endoctrinated in the box rental school of thought.

I was shocked to hear a camera assistant say to my boom op at one time, "if you don't want it dented, don't rent it"

I think i might include some pics of classic mishandling of our gear to truly convey the message that the sound department is not in possession of our own gear when these things happen.  I know there are pics out there of slates being held by the top stick (stressing the hinge), and others.

  2. Please please please! Refuse to sign box rental agreements for your sound package. It's not a box or kit, it's a package. It's not a drill, tape measure, laptop, or cell phone.

I put $1800 worth of wireless gear on talent, and they walk away from me for 6 hours or more.

I hand out $300 comteks to people in video village, and do not have them in my possession for 12 hours.

Read the box rental form carefully.

When you sign the box rental agreement, there's a clause that states that production is not liable for damage to your gear.

On a show a long time ago, I submitted an l & d form for a lost comtek, and the studio attached my signed box rental agreement in email refusing to reimburse me.

Don't sign the box rental form! Your company should Invoice the production very much like the g & e rental houses do.

  3. Hey everyone--

I bought a used PSC cart several years ago, and it seems that this cart might be one of the original carts because the two drawers are welded in.  There are no rack rails on the front, and the back of the cart will not accommodate a full width rack space without issues.  I could not install sliding shelves because there is no area in the back of the cart to fasten the back of the shelf.

My cart is now showing signs of age and wear/tear.  some of the welds are breaking.

I'm considering buying a new PSC cart, and I was wondering if the new carts with front rack rails have the ability to mount patch panels in the back.

    thanks

    Aron

  4. I still send a scratch track feed to the camera only out of pity for the editor (or assistant editor) syncing everything up, because I know the pain of having to sync up hours and hours of material with no reference at all. I do this just on the belt-and-suspenders approach, just in case the timecode fails -- on camera's end.

I used to send a scratch track thru an IFB to camera.  I stopped that as well when post was complaining about the quality and rf hits on the scratch track.  they were  not synching to the mix track on the dvd-rams, and they were editing with the scratch track.  never send them something that they shouldn't be using.  it always backfires.

  5. When the RED ONE was first introduced, I had TREW Audio build me some custom breakaway camera pigtails for my REMOTE AUDIO snakes.  These worked ok for the first few firmware revs.  I even became very schooled in the art of avoiding the ground loop (all power must come from the same source--be they monitors, cart power, or camera power).  Once RED decided to retrofit new audio boards into their cameras, and on a regular basis i'd never be certain as to what firmware ver or hardware ver I was dealing with, and the returns were never consistent, i stopped sending audio to the camera.

a lockit box on the camera and a nice digital recorder resolves all issues.

  6. Aron, I made the same upgrade last year. You'll love the slide of the new magnetic faders. Dust covers are nice too!

    -C

Thanks Chris. I got the loaner CL-9 from sound devices. The faders have the dust protectors on them, and I liked the magnetic knobs. I like my color fader knobs, and was wondering if sound devices was ever going to add color magnetic knobs to their accessories.
  7. I never had any issues with my CL-9 trims or faders until I did a show with really poor environmental conditions.  we were in a rock quarry (dust and debris everywhere), torrential downpours of rain, and in a field with intentional fire burns.

My CL-9 has not recovered despite spraying compressed air into the faders.  I am about to send this unit in for an overhaul/cleaning.

The techs at SD will retrofit this unit with new 'dust cover' faders and clean/replace my trims.

  8. how would you make your own induction loop using an amplifier and what kind of cable would you use with it?

Also, I have about 5 of the phonak ear pieces with some older comtek loops.  some of my loops need to be replaced or repaired.

from what i'm reading, it seems that regular t-coil hearing aids will work with both of these induction loops as well?

  9. Hi everyone:

I'm working on a show set in the late 50s, and the set decorator is looking to rent some mics.

the top pic is for a lecturn, and the bottom pic is for a singer.

if anyone here has these to rent, please email Adam Willis (alchemistkubrick@gmail.com) or Alex West (birdsandcherries@yahoo.com)

    thanks,

  10. 4x Composite video lines over Cat5, with BNC breakouts, cast aluminum cases and rugged, locking, Neutrik EtherCon Cat5 connections.

Built these for a fellow JWSound member, happy to build more if interested.

Are those external BnC connectors available with an RCA on the other end?

  11. " It was television (high page count), and apparently exposing the actor's neck was a last minute decision. "

    so ?? and so ??

if she had been involved when you hid the mic, she would have known it was there....

but the production covered it (L&D), right ?

Production covered it. Wardrobe was present when we were micing talent. She was not paying attention to my technique. She was only concerned that the mic wasn't reading.
