  1. Hi, I have an AES breakout cable (terminating in XLR) for my Nomad and also the Remote Audio mixer cable for Nomad. I'm wondering if it's possible to successfully and reliably transmit an AES signal through the Remote Audio cable? It would be into a Sony XDCAM (don't have one handy for testing). I think I remember reading somewhere a good while ago that it's possible to run into problems running an AES signal through "regular" audio cables, so I wanted to check. Thanks!
  2. Jim, the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP is what I have. FireWire, two mic/instrument/line ins, two more without preamps, 6 outs I think... also comp, EQ and reverb on the two preamped ins (though I never used them, prefer to work in the box...) and several impulse response emulations for headphones with well-known monitor speaker responses and three studio rooms. Two headphone outs and super low latency for both recording and virtual instruments. It's around $250 I guess so over your preferred limit, but has lots of features if your son really gets bitten by the audio bug. Edit: it also has MIDI connectivity. The round connector. I'm sure the "lower-end" Focusrites are fine, too!
  3. There's also the TetraMic. Here: http://www.core-sound.com/TetraMic/1.php
  4. When choosing a mixer bag I would make sure it has plenty of extra space for stuff like gaffer's tape and maybe even a power distribution system. For example, if I recall correctly the Sound Devices/Camrade bag for the 302 doesn't house much more than the mixer, those two radio kits and the H4n, maybe. For example, I happily use my Petrol bag (PS614 I think) for both 302 and Nomad gigs, you can fitso much in that bag while the bag itself doesn't feel that big. On the other hand, if all you really need for a gig are the mixer, two radios and a boom, the aforementioned Camrade bag is super light.
  5. Yeah, I really hope Disney and Abrams manage to put something nice out. I read somewhere that every other SW film they put out will be a spin-off/side story type of affair. There would certainly be some nice material to draw from, in the form of books and a few video games (namely Knights of the Old Republic), but I don't suppose they'll go that way. Not much hope for me to work on any of them, though.
  6. Just now I read an article on Helsingin Sanomat saying we're living in a Finnish microbrewery renaissance. It says that one of the strenghts of beermaking in Finland is that we don't have a old beer tradition, so lots of variety it seems? I also found this list someone made of Finnish breweries and their products: http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/finbrew.htm - however I don't know when it's been updated last and it also includes the big breweries like Olvi and Sinebrychoff which produce the bulk of regular Finnish wate... lager. I certainly see some newer products missing from the list. There's a S big co-op organization named S Group that gets some heat for invading all the good market spaces with their chain restaurants (the food usually ranging from poor to OK), hotels and gas stations and they also have the largest chains of grocery stores, I think. But one thing they need to be commended on is their beer restaurants, such as William K, Milenka, Rotterdam and Angleterre. These often have a good selection of imports with changing specials.
  7. She certainly looks the part! Even with sweatpants and all.
  8. I'm also a PC user waiting for Altiverb 7 (man it's taking long and no indication of the progress except "we'll tell when it's ready"). A Speakerphone 2 update to make the UI work properly with 64-bit hosts would also rock my world. Anyway, wasn't the ability to create your own IRs for Altiverb reserved for Mac users only?
  9. I'm not sure if I'm picturing this right in my mind, but if keeping the boom at a manageable length, wouldn't you easily pick up the camera operators' skis as well? I would probably go with a lav. Maybe even two? Maybe with a long wire you could get the other one closer to the ground/snow for close-up sounds? Note: Last time I did any downhill skiing was abt 20 years ago at the age of 10 or something...
  10. Wow, that's superb! I definitely want a few, could you PM me the payment details, Matt? I'm on vacation in SE Asia, but will get online once in a while. BTW, is dfisk secretly Zach Galifianakis?
  11. Nothing like I would imagine places like Germany might have... but there are sone restaurants with their own micro breweries... I probably don't know the half of it, though. Should probably research! How about Sweden?
  12. I can vouch for this. An okay Finnish cheap lager.
  13. A helium filled blimp might be fun!
  14. Check out soundsnap.com? Or the BBC Sound Effects series from Sound Ideas? The latter might be a tad expensive though.
  15. For the gaffer - if it is needed, a cigarette lighter will warm up the glue.
  16. Yep, same thing happened with my G3's (OST TL-40) and and induction stove. One of those things you probably wouldn't realize to watch for, before it happened to you, I guess.
  17. Interesting that you found the lower-end system to sound better than the high-end one. Of course, it's all subjective. Can anyone point to any documents or pages with information about this En2 TXP transmitter? As someone pointed out, it's not mentioned on audioltd.com. Google finds some German dealers' pages but I can't find the difference between the two clearly stated.
  18. - Forgot a boom leaning on a tree doing an internship. Noticed at the shoot location, drove back while the mixer and boom op set up for the shoot. Quite luckily the boom was still there and if I recall correctly I made it back before we were rolling. Phew. - Accidentally stopped rolling on a 744T on a shoestring budget indie film that relied heavily on ad-libbing etc. It was bag work and I was running on a street with the director/cam op and the actors. - Stumbled on cables while setting up for a studio interview shoot. Tripped a Dedo light which hit a cam op on the head. No injury to speak of, and only a bulb broke on the Dedo. Again, phew.
  19. Headphones are largely a matter of taste. Two often used models are Sony MDR-7506 and Sennheiser HD 25-1 II - I use the latter. I think some use Ultrasone headphones, which are different so that the sound doesn't come straight from the side, but the drivers are positioned diagonally from the front-side, which might help with listening fatigue. I've got a pair of Ultrasones at home but they're heavy studio headphones. From what I've read, I'd suggest getting an external power distro system + battery for the DR-680. Also, get better mics for the Sennheiser G3's, for example the very affordable Oscar Sound Tech mics.
  20. Very valid point. I must add though that often the NTG-3 performs fairly well in indoors as well. But if there is some money to go around, getting a hyper or cardioid mic might well be worth it.
  21. Thanks for the input, all. Thomann seems to have the PCM-D50 in stock, even one B-stock, so it would be a tad cheaper. I'll have to think about this, though. It is of course a bit expensive for something that on safer (close to home or professional/insured) trips I would simply do with the gear I already own such as 302+H2n or Nomad. Maybe I'll try and shop around for a used one.
  22. Ahh, at least it was sub-zero snow instead of wet, above-freezing point snow! I actually took a fall and scooped some into my bag but the 302 didn't mind it too much, luckily. But that's how it is in these parts.
