  1. Two different FX9's two different shoots same issue. Glad for your comment in particular acdave that there were no complaints from post. Set my 633 to bounce one of the channels when sending tone and both input 1 and 2 on the camera were showing correct (iso) VU's and when listening to camera with headphones my tone was clean both channels. It's just the menu saying shoe input on one and can not proceed to change it to input one. Seems to be some bad code that Sonny Boy needs to fix but the physical switches appear to route sound fine even if it doesn't say so.

  2. I've got a regular client who said if fully vaccinated then no need for antigen tests with them anyway. That was a plus to me where I've been going for the better part of a year with stress after the swab about what it will be pos or neg as in do I work, or do I go home and miss some real income.

Got the Pfizer yesterday first dose, and no side effects other than a somewhat sore arm today. I was working a boom over Robert Rodriguez a few hours ago, and wasn't sore enough to notice. Got antigen tested before work this morning, and was negative even less than a day after the first shot.

So far so good where the 95% effective for the next six months Pfizer takes some pressure off the inevitable antigen tests that most productions seem to be doing now days.

  3. Thanks for your thoughts Philip, I do have Dan Dugan's algorithm enabled on each track, and it's been a very helpful tool. (Dugan's automix is amazing.) I have zero experience with NoiseAssist or CEDAR sdnx plugins though, and at $1,100 for four instances, thought I'd ask for input if that investment would help with crosstalk in particular. Good to know that it wouldn't, but from the samples on the Sound Devices site demonstrating how they can help lesson background noise, I can hear how they could be good tools for that use in particular.

  4. Anyone have any experience with Noise Assist on their 833 helping with talent crosstalk? Some times talent talks over each other and although iso'd on individual tracks, their lavs still pick each other up. Room tone of course, but I'm wondering if Noise Assist might help post out with crosstalk.

  5.

It looks like the internal battery on my SD633 isn't holding a charge in that when I power down the unit within seconds the blue LED stops blinking and when powering back up timecode is lost and has to be re-jammed. Anyone change the internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery in a 633 before? I'd rather not send the unit into SD just to replace a battery.

  6. Larry, I've valued your input on this forum for years. You've definitively answered my question about 2.4Ghz being (increasingly) crowded; in particular, your observation that AC powered devices are able to use the full two watts allowed which would inevitably over power the more humble transmitters. Thanks

  7. Helpful info folks and sharing your experience is much appreciated. Getting a more clear idea as to Zaxnet range using 2.4Ghz that a third party booster is most often used. I do mostly bag work so the extra box (and draw on the NP1) may not be ideal for me. It's looking like sticking with assistive listening devices around 216Mhz may be the best set up for what I use over the shoulder. Thanks again for the input.

  8. I've owned and used Lectrosonics R1a receivers in years past and currently own and use Comtek PR-216 receivers, but its time for a change in that the Comteks just aren't performing as reliably as needed. The signal needs to be consistently clean and clear as the client's opinion of my work is influenced by what they hear over IFB.

R1a receivers are rock solid and sound fine, but I want to get away from using 9v with a battery life of 8 hours per alkaline. The several days a Comtek will go between battery changes is exceptional, but the 10mw M-216 Option P7 transmitter and plastic case on the receivers have been weak points.

So I'm considering Zaxcom for IFB because it's the other option I don’t have experience with, and maybe I've been missing out all this time?

What's your experience with an IFB200 to ERX3TCD? In particular, is the range reliably up to 100’ with Zaxnet using 2.4Ghz? Seems like there are so many devices using 2.4Ghz with everyone having a smart phone etc etc that interference could be an issue.

  9. We do a bunch of windshield time in Texas with several hours drive between the big cities so something that cruses an interstate at 75 but still gets decent gas mileage is a consideration. I'll also get asked by a producer to jump in my car (billing mileage) so something that represents my business well with a client is important.

I've worked Weather Channel storm coverage too many times over the years so an all wheel drive with good ground clearance has gotten me through flooding, blizzards, and hurricanes many times.

One last consideration is the most important and that's does the gear fit in the back without too much hassle pulling something out of the way to get to something else underneath.

I'm on my second Toyota RAV4 having sold the first only because it got to be so high of mileage I wanted to make sure and have reliable transportation. So I found a low mileage used 2012 to buy. Only thing is, Toyota changed the body style and the engine option with the 2013 year model. The 2012 has a V6 that I get 28MPG and the spare tire at the back allows for a bunch of stuff to be stowed below the deck.

A RAV4 2012 with V6 AWD has been great, but after this one gets higher miles I'll have to look at other makes and models as 2013 and later years don't have the features that work for me.

A dodge Caravan with Stow-n-go seats is commonly rented by production as they hold an amazing number of Pelican cases and/or people which makes it worth considering as a production vehicle. Similarly, a Ford Transit Connect wagon (the smaller one and not necessarily the full size van) has some production friendly features that makes it worth considering.

A vehicle is a tool for our trade with location sound work where I tend to lean toward looking at makes and models that are more practical.

  10. Having more than one make / model of lav mic in your kit helps. Most of my lavs are COS-11d's which certainly is the go-to, but a Countryman B6 can be a real problem solver. It's small enough to just barely poke out from under a tie knot, or a shirt button hole, or top stick taped over the top of an ear or even above the forehead in the hair if there's enough time to rig it. B6 w/o a windscreen is crazy wind (breath even) sensitive so using them indoors when taking advantage of their dimenuitive size by hiding them is helpful.

  11. Working regularly on a cable reality show where the DP rents a Bolt. It's wreaked havoc on my Lectro block 19 SRb receiver creating a scenario where a wireless hop from my bag is useless. Bottom line in my experience with a Bolt is it's either wireless video or wireless audio from / to the camera but not both at the same time.

Agree also with prior posts (even a couple years later) that cheap BNC cables that lack good shielding can spew out a crazy amount of RF also creating havoc for a wireless receiver. Most of the shooters I work with like having a color monitor up on top of their camera for reference but they also like spending as little as possible (so it seems) on BNC cables which is a lousy combination for RF hit free sound on the wireless hop.

  12. I'm considering a new camera hop set up and am enticed by the TRX900CL to an RX200 as it can be self-powered with AA's. The Zaxnet function with TC and IFB is also a bonus in one transmitter. My bag currently has three Lectrosonics SRb receivers in it - blocks 21, 24, and 26. I've been using block 19 for the hop with a couple SMV's to a couple more SRb receivers so the frequency separation has been fine between transmitters and receivers in the bag.

Zaxcom starts at block 20 (vs the 19 T band my hops are in now)  so I'm concerned that an adjacent block wouldn't be enough separation from the SRb block 21. Screws in the chases and a toggle switch are helpful as well as a single frequency, but my question is in your opinion or experience, would a TRX900CL on block 20 step on the reception of the SRb on block 21 in the bag?

  13. I looked at the Mackie when it was first announced, but ended up going with a couple Samson 106 units instead.

Glad to see some options out there in addition to a Foxtex. Most have some serious battery life and good volume levels. For years I've been using a couple Anchor AN1000x for live sound reinforcement (and also have a Liberty pair as well), but have found the Samson 106 to be the go-to these days.

  14. UGH...the TREX system for expense reimbursement from CBS NEWS is the ONLY reason there is still an ancient Toshiba PC laptop in the top of the closet. When I work for them, I drag it out, fill out the crazy forms and put it away!!!!

That's funny Cleve - I keep a white poly MacBook around just for TREX with an older OS and older Java version installed.

  15. Guess I'm the only one so far. I use your app regularly (and appreciate its thoughtful layout) and have a sport on order. Wish there would be more of us that you could justify porting it to the watch as it would be convenient to play dweedle tones from the wrist. I'm always having to explain to someone why I'm sticking my iPhone up to their chest at least the first time where they instinctively reach for it thinking I'm handing them my phone.

  16. I wholeheartedly urge Zaxcom to consider making a recorder like a ZFR with a mic passthrough that might be avail with various connector types.  I would strongly consider buying such a device, even at considerable increase in cost over the DR10.

That records WAV and MP3 natively. Using ZaxConvert to go through the process of changing audio files at the end of a production day takes time when so often copying files to the DIT or producer's laptop is being done after wrap.

  17. Must be interference on the particular channel you're using relative to the environment your shooting in or other gear in your kit, as three PR-216 option p7 transmitters and a BST 75 transmitter as well as the many PR 216 receivers I've got haven never "broken squelch" in so many years I've owned and used them.  I've regularly used channel  4 4  (both pots turned to four) and always had reliable IFB.
