  1. I, too was one of the many that climbed the steps in SoHo to get gear from Larry. He was not only a patron of independent production, but was cool in that Soho Loft way - like the kind of characters you'd only see in a movie. His space was cool, his vibe was cool and his ability to Mcgiver old equipment back to life was cool. I knew he left NYC, but he sorta kinda fell off my multiverse after that. I'm heartened to know that Lee brought him along on the journey and that he got to bask in the weatherless world of LA after wrestling the New York lifestyle. He was missed when he left NYC and I'm sure he will be missed by the LA community. Wherever his spirit might be, I hope he's well grounded, in sync and smiling... dBrooks still trapped in NYC
  2. Here's the thing... I don't want to feel like the guy in Good Fellas when Joe Pesci tightens the vise on his head.... And that's what the DT48's and the Sennheiser 25's fee like. The Circumaural Headphones vs. Supra Aural Headphones is a grande and long debated issue. The over the ear gives better isolation, but get hot; the on the ear require more vise-grip pressure to get that isolation. I am still hunting for the 'golden phones....' and thought you wise folks could answer the unanswerable question....
  3. and for field work, they are SO DAMN EXPENSIVE to be kicked around locations and weather...
  4. Essentially the ECM 88 replacement, I guess. - at least according to B&H...
  5. Hey My Audio Brothers and Sound Sisters! Every 4-6 years I get bored with the sound of my headphones; I started last century with Beyers DT 48's , then Sony MDR 7506's , then Sennheisers HD 25's, Then Ultrasone HFI 560's, then Ultrasone 580's then Sennheisers again... you get the idea. My question for you is what is your fave headphone for mixing? Am I the only one whose ears get fatigued like this? Please give me some suggestions as to what your choice phones are....
  6. I'm curious if anyone out there has worked with the Sony ECM 90bc's. They are not cheap lavs and I'm curious how they sound and hide and generally work in our world. Thanks [-and wash your hands!]
  7. I've been a Rogue Amoeba customer for years. He is really responsive and writes good code. Audio Hijack and Fission are two of my go-to programs and are low overhead and pretty bulletproof. I'll check out Farrago and letcha know....
  8. If are shooting with ac in a 'sit down' situation and the power fails, likely the lights and camera will also fail. It seems like more gack to carry and deal with and you will end up with track but no pictures to cover it....
  9. can't wait for the time-lapse of it coming together!
  10. Truu... you can turn the pilot tone off so radio 'hears' all. The quality of audio is the big issue. Has anyone had any experience with this? If I had a 470 block TX I guess I'd know... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Hey Sound Peeps! There is a host of affordable [cheap] chinese radios that reach up to 520 MHz. I was wondering if anyone had experience transmitting in the 420 Block and using these as comtek substitutes. At $15-25 dollars a piece, it's hard to not consider handing them out to crew instead of comteks or lectro ifb's. The only consideration is if the narrow fm receiver works well enough with a wide fm transmitter to make it acceptably intelligible. This is what I'm thinking about: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/6pcs-Mini-Walkie-Talkie-Retevis-RT22-Long-Range-UHF-400-480MHz-16CH-CTCSS-DCS-TOT-VOX/32741929692.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.265.2RrKbv&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_3_10065_10068_10084_10083_10080_10082_10081_10060_10061_10062_10056_10055_10037_10054_10033_10059_10032_10078_10079_10077_10073_10070_10052_423_10050_10051,searchweb201603_2&btsid=70ad5d16-83dc-458f-a072-9e0910497ff7 I've tested these units and they actually transmit and receive up to 520 MHz, though you'd turn off the TX in this application. The other consideration is that the audio output is a 2.5 mm jack so you would need a 'step up' adaptor to 3.5 mm, but at that price.... Any input? Thanks, dB
  12. If this really is a race to the bottom [as witnessed by our democracy in action], then you should check out: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10set-Connector-M-F-Mini-XLR-3-Pin-Male-plug-Cable-Inline-Female-plug-3-pin/32272383196.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.10.RTLQI1&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10091_10090_10088_10089,searchweb201603_1&btsid=3a30ad44-b35c-4039-a595-561016ffeb4c That comes to 3.90 per pair if inline t3F &t3M. I've used these at the top of boom cables to make them break aways for changing mics and to fit in NYC since cases. I've had no issues or loss of sound quality between these 'made in china' and the witchcraft 'prolly made in china' ones.
  13. I believe we were talking big mics with the rubbers. Sticks, shotguns etc... I suppose if you knew it was going in the drink you could tightly stretch and rubber band the lav head then cut the excess. In my experience it is not worth even bothering with a lav in most hurricane or deadliest catch situations. I know that Carl Countryman used to take great joy in submersing his em(?) series (like the trams) in a can of coke and amplifying it at AES conventions. Apparently, the surface tension of he mic screen keeps the bad liquid out... Voice technologies also has a water-proof mic... Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

  15. There is a "swiss army knife" of audio conversion called XLD that is free and takes BWAV files and will id3 tag them with the timecode timestamp while converting to.mp3. I've worked with the developer and he is very open to integrating usefulness to his program. http://sourceforge.net/projects/xld/ for when you haven't rolled .mp3 live, this works great for conversion. 16. House of Topham prevailed in the bocce gamande but everyone was a winner thanks to Barbara and the K-tek folks generosity. He beer was fresh and the company was grand. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
  17. Hey Fellow Sound Catchers... I am trying to find apps that will work as a sound logger/reporter on an android [nexus] tablet. I know there are modules for MovieSlate and some other IOS apps for the big A, but I haven't come across any 'droid ones. It seems pretty straight forward to make some sort of dBase, but the lazy me and the over extended me is looking for an 'off-the-shelf' logging/reporting pgm. Any bright opinions?
  18. I'm surprised nobody has suggested Voice Technologies. They have a kevlar reinforced thread in the cable, I think and are cheaper than the DPA's and for the sound of impact and yelling, will probably work just fine.
  19. wherever you go, ManglerMixer is there! -at least he was for me!
  20. I have been disappointed in the Rode. I haven't noticed much coloration, but it is so DAMN HEAVY and built to punish or haze you when you boom. On a fully extended boom, no one needs a pistol grip to add excess weight! The choice of materials reflects an attempt to make the zepp robust, but it does so at a cost that will burn your shoulders for years to come...
  21. For a camera that is thousands of dollars more than a 5D, it is a little dissapointing that there is no Hirose power tap, the headphone monitor amp is for crap, the controls are 'facing heavenward,' and the timecode is either in or out, but not both. With no 5 pin audio, you are relegated to a hissy headphone amp, how can a fancy schmancy camera be sooooo short sighted?
  22. I've use them for a while and they are 'reasonable'.... For timecode transcripts or some light duty timecode, ideally Ambient products are the bomb and much more solid than Deneke or Horita, but where the real world meets your ideals, Horita is a viable option for 29 and 24 based timecode
