  1. Andy Cooper has this application note "Short-Form Cleaning Instructions for Penny & Giles Fader" posted on his site. I'm not sure it's useful for the pots on a field mixer: http://www.coopersound.com/faqsframe.htm
  2. We didn't shoot at the Harry Partch Instrumentarium at Montclair State, but we did shoot several days at SUNY Purchase where many of his instruments were, and where a group of devotees were studying.
  3. About 15 years ago I worked some days on a posthumous documentary on Harry Partch and his instrument creations. Apparently he was quite a character as well. I used a Nagra 4.2 and a Schoeps CMC4Uk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Partch
  4. I followed links from the recent sound blanket thread and saw this inexpensive cover, good for use on the upright cart when on the truck. http://www.uscargocontrol.com/washerdryerrangecover-p-289.html
  5. The GAO is reporting to Congress possible fixes for the large "tax gap". The sole proprietor is in their sites: http://cryptome.org/gao-09-815.pdf
  6. Azz saving antenna extensions can be accomplished with a UM series transmitter, or with the new SMx series. OTOH it is unclear whether the SMx series will continue to be available without the smaM antenna connector.
  7. The guys at the Lectrosonics booth at AES said that by years end they plan to release the SMV- a variable, selectable power output version of the (single battery) SMa. I see that it is now on the website: http://www.lectrosonics.com/hybrid/sm/smv.htm They also discussed an additional reason for the 50mW setting. The NYC Broadway houses are in agreement to use this limited power setting. For my purposes, I am not sure that I like the upgraded versions which now have the detachable antenna. I believe it degrades the extremely low profile.
  8. A recent DOT notice re a dormant topic: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are alerting shippers and carriers to the importance of transporting lithium batteries safely. PHMSA and FAA are concerned that many persons who ship lithium batteries do not recognize the hazards posed by these batteries during transportation. http://cryptome.org/0001/phmsa100709.htm Several anecdotal events are listed. I find irony with the "e-cigarette" incident.
  9. This article is a bit light on details, but it seems the police car and its occupants suffered most: A Portland police patrol car carrying two crew members from the television show "Cops" collided with another car Tuesday night, police said. http://www.officer.com/online/article.jsp?siteSection=1&id=48627
  10. Local 52 has no such classification limitations inside it's sound craft category. A Boom Op or Utility can work as a Mixer and vice versa. One can even be bumped up to Mixer on the day s/he was hired (e.g. for a playback scene or a last minute 2nd unit). The dues withheld in each paycheck are a percentage of the pay, so the dues are then higher for the member for that day. Additionally, members of the Local 52 Sound category are also permitted to work in the Video Assist category.
  11. I am happy with the Redco Duracat stranded cable and their in-house assembly. http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=1224 Redco is very reasonable and they have a fast delivery. I will be ordering another 100' extension. Details at this earlier post: http://jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=1448.msg32264#msg32264
  12. I didn't hear any Cabaret Voltaire embedded, but I did hear The Cramps. And he's father to Emma Watson.
  13. FYI PSC Power Max Power Distribution System for sale on eBay. This is NOT mine nor am I affiliated. It did not sell and was re-listed: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320410450914&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI
  14. I don't know if this is a "real" expiration date, but there's a $50 promo today: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4811/sound-studio
  15. I posit that privatization is corporate socialism. This is to be decried: http://informationclearinghouse.info/article23192.htm I don't believe that putting the vulture capitalist health insurance industry on notice is socialism. edited for clarity
  16. I have followed the threads, here and elsewhere, on the Retired LAPD LEOs and it does appear to be a power/revenue grab by the city. The system sounds like it works very well as is. I would like to point to the NYPD MOFTB system as another successful model. It is a full time dedicated and experienced unit and I have been told that it is the only unit of its kind in any US city that provides service free of charge to production. http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/locations/nypd_message.shtml It's probable, since Bratton was a former NYPD Police Commissioner, that this model was examined by the LAPD, and likely shot down for budgetary reasons.
  17. Has there been any recent on set experience with the Lanc time code extracting devices for the semi pro cameras? http://www.ambient.de/produkte/timecode/lanclogger/lanclogger_e.html http://www.spcomms.com/lanc_interface/index.html There was talk of some permutations of these from various manufacturers over the last couple of years, but I have heard little reports.
  18. It appears C. Bradley Thompson gives us a non-literary update of Ayn Rand and her lifelong advocacy for unadulterated greed and worship at the altar of selfishness, as well as a Leo Strauss adherents' bourgeois apology for "classic natural right", or a dictatorship by the owner class and economic manifest destiny.
  19. Below are two brands of professional CAT 5 cable. The Belden has two grades- one is OK for indoors, the other for rougher environments. It coils well and lays flat: http://www.belden.com/01Home/01_FeaturedProduct.cfm I have ordered the stranded version of this from Redco. I will report later on the coiling and durability of it: http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=1224 The earlier photos posted here: http://jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=1448.msg28973#msg28973 show the heavy duty Neutrik etherCON RJ45 jacks on the boxes. These are mated to these plugs: http://www.neutrik.com/us/en/dataconnectors/210_1267482192/NE8MC_detail.aspx http://www.neutrik.com/client/neutrik/media/products/view/210_1267482192.jpg These do not snag on the floor or other obstructions when coiling or pulling through. They would then couple with this for additional extensions: http://www.neutrik.com/client/neutrik/media/products/view/210_941824373.jpg
  20. Update of the CAT 5 interface: I commissioned Steven Zuch to assemble a custom CAT 5 interface box. I had him terminate one of the XLR lines with the Neutrik convertCON. This allows that line to be used as a send or a return. The extra length on the video cables is so the box can be mounted lower on the cart and the video runs can reach the monitors at eye level.
  21. This is a 2 track recorder. I pulled the ad from this months EQ magazine: http://audiofile-engineering.com/ screen shots: http://audiofile-engineering.com/special/fire/index.html They have some other interesting products as well. Marketing rant: The website is a bit annoying in that it doesn't offer much info- you must click through to the iTunes store via iTunes. The URLs in the descriptor are not hyperlinks, so one must type out the URL into a browser to find out what mics are supported. The app doesn't appear in a search of the apple.com iPhone app-store. 21st Century marketing.
  22. Check out this modified SM57: http://www.granelliaudiolabs.com/
  23. So, did anybody bite? And who is the "local boom op can be found"?
  24. Mike, the http://www.wheeleez.com/ site has lots of photos of interesting rigs. I wonder if it's feasible to create some sort of conversion rig to add this to a standard cart wheel for sand or rough terrain: http://www.backstageweb.com/tires.htm
  25. Includes a paean to The Conversation: Conjuring up images of Gene Hackman as the surveillance expert in Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Conversation,” Mr. Morton moved through the park surreptitiously for more than 40 days over the course of a year, capturing gospel choirs, park-bench arguments, the rattle of dead leaves and the heartbeatlike clack of lawn-bowling balls. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/06/arts/06sound.html
