  1. Ty is a pretty amazing individual!!! I spent many a day with him as he pursued those 7 titles. At his home in C. TX as well as on the road. They offered the cameraman and I bull rides, on some VERY OLD bulls they said wouldn't buck much at all. The producer went first and went flying thru the air. NO THANKS! But yes rodeo is quite the show and the aural assault. In HOUSTON they also mix in sounds from carefully placed 416's in the area of the gates, so when the metal gate swings open, you hear that thru the house feed. I have often thought they may actually have mics buried in the ground just outside the gates, but never confirmed that. Usually the concerts that follow each nites performace are worth the price of admission, even if rodeo and bull riding ain't your thang!!! cleve
  2. Hey, check RAMPS tonite for a guy looking for a boom op for an indie to shoot in NM in Dec., then over to Greece in Jan...heck in addition to work, it might be fun... cleve
  3. Ditto for going to "unread posts" first. It has never failed me! I have done few posts into the categories, more responding to posts I find in unread. This is fantastic spot for general gear news, discussions, and for more involved posts into the minutia of what we do. MANY THANKS.....cleve
  4. Jason...how do you get to the buttons with it in that case? I have a spot for mine in the mixer bag, PETROL and so far so good. I don't however roll it on much except interviews and maybe BU for music or a speech... cleve
  5. That should work just fine...but it is important that you or someone find out the tech specs from the transcription house...I have seen TC levels all over the place. TA in NYC likes it between -3 and -6 and audio peaks about the same level. But we used to send it with TC at -12 to -20 and they never said anything. Seems they were re-recording it in house, adding time to turning around the transcriptions. The producer may have the software and folks in-house to do the transcription....dunno??? It will take a Y cable with mini-stereo in. I may be stating the oh so obvious, and if so I apologize, but the mini plugs are a pain and you have to be careful with them and the R9! I like having the mini in be a right angle if you have it. For what it does, it is a very good little machine. Just make sure it is set for the lowest level of MP3 recording, so the file size does not get out of hand. And if the battery logo starts to blink, you don't have a lot of battery power left...
  6. Kinda depends on what he wants to do with the files when all is over. If they are going to a transcription house, it would be best to check with them and see where they like the levels...one NYC house likes TC no lower than -6 and audio about the same! Is the producer going to label the files, make note of the file size, do the uploading, etc? In addition, since the levels can't be adjusted separately, you will have to either pad the TC down to mic or get your audio in from a line level source. Audio in is on a mini plug, so be sure it is seated properly, and not able to be bumped or moved while recording!!! cleve
  7. Sorry fellows!!! I did not know the H2 had been released. I thought Whitney was getting an H4 for $200. But the H2 seems to be a decent machine...all in all, this is for transcription purposes!!!! cleve
  8. Tom...are you using the FR-2LE for transcription purposes? Only drawback I see by reading the specs is that it records .mp3 @192kps! The transcription houses like the files to be as small as possible for easier uploading. I run the R-09 at 64kps and have not had a complaint about file size. I would like to think I can record at whatever sample rate, go home, downconvert to a respectable rate and then upload. The reality is that I am being asked to upload transcriptions at lunch, so if I have to drag out the laptop, downconvert, rename the file, log on, upload, etc, where will I find time to eat. I do like the looks and build of the LE a lot..........cleve
  9. Whitney...where did you find the H2 for $200? Despite the lack of a pause button, if it is seems a bit more durable and easier to use than the R-09, for $200 I will give it a try!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. R-9 has been very good for me for over a year...just be carful with the mini jack. the zoom H2 is working quite well for a friend of mine, but NO pause button. That makes for very long files or new files with every camera change...not something the transcription house likes!!!!
  11. I could be wrong, but think that is colored tape along the edges for remembering which receiver is with which transmitter!!!
  12. I was there last summer for a couple of weeks...used my Lectrosonics BLK 25 and 27 wireless mics with no problema!!! Think the camera supplied links were in BLK 21!!! But only two days in Guatemala City...otherwise WAY OUT in the countryside.... cleve
  13. Good old fashioned non-electronic slate...or maybe the documentary makers friend, the bloop slate? We have been doing small projects on those pesky PANNY cameras that way, and all involved seem to be happy. This was to DAT, but hopefully I am moving into some kind of CF/DVD/??? based recording system this year. I guess that is one of the reasons I have several boxes of stuff that appears as if it should be thrown away, but it isn't. cleve

    How many cables?

Peter, you can purchase a lot of cable and microphones for the cost of a quality wireless system. And depending on your type of work might not need the wireless often. But when the shot DEMANDS it, there is almost no other way. And it goes beyond the long tracking shots...car to car shots...extreme long lense shots...the list goes on. cleve
  15. Jeff, when was this picture shot? I met your DAD decades ago, in Dallas, when he passed through and stopped to chat with Victor Duncan. I was an AC in my first life and in the shop to check out a camera package...what a treat!!! I wish I had seen his film at SUNDANCE but we were there only a couple of days...story specific things to shoot... cleve
  16. I know you guys recording to DVD or hard drives, hand over the drive at the end of the day, and then get it back once all the material is synced up... What is the system for using the 744T with the hard drive and CF? What do you do at the end of the day or end of the shoot? I am thinking a 702T might be good for me, but just not sure the folks I do business with would get it, if I handed them a CF card and said, THANKS! I guess some client and post production education here in Dallas might be in order... many thanks...cleve
  17. The 816 rides along in the PELICAN all over the world...last time it came out, a long walk by a basketball player and his wife getting off a floatplane on a very busy dock in St. Thomas...they walked...the shooter and I walked backwards and boomed...but nothing else would have let me hear what they had to say. When we did playback, I was AMAZED!!! And for only about the third time in 30+ years got a call from the post folks telling me how great that scene was, and how the HE-- did I mic it? Remains OUR little secret now... cleve
