  1. Thanks for good thoughts, mates ! My 'rush' to create a gold RE-20 has slowed, with a production pause for a week. Props has a non-working mic that they're applying their Midas touch to; after that, I hope to insert the best possible mic element (SM57, Schoeps, ECM-50 ?) into the heart of the beast. I'll post updates -- (This past week, I spoke with 16 audio rental or prop rental companies - no suitable golden RE-20 to be had. A couple of promising leads, but nothing materialized. I'm surprised there isn't one out in the world already . . .) (Thanks for the lead to Dreamhire, Mike - they WEREN'T on my list ! I'm emailing Chris Dunn now, just in case. Thanks !)
  2. Hi, Doug ! Yeah, I guess in Seattle you've got the moss-covered version . . . Fond regards ! Thanks for good thoughts, mates ! 3. Hello, Soundies (cross-posting to a couple of discussions) -- A project I'm prepping has a scene with Rush Limbaugh (or, a reasonable facsimile), and I'm hoping to find a good-sounding, good-looking version of his microphone - the legendary GOLD ElectroVoice RE-20. I hope there's one out there that I might rent - please tell me ! Thanks -- Glenn Berkovitz glennb@pobox.com (Hollywood)

  5. I came across the news of Walt's death only today, from the attached Variety.com clipping. My heart hit the floor - I think Walt had been doing pretty well after some long periods of health battles. Hell, he said he was going to formally retire, but then his clients kept him too busy for him to get around to it. I'm really saddened by this news - my deepest condolences to Walt's family, and to all us friends and peers who are missing him already. Walt Martin, Clint Eastwood’s Sound Mixer, Dies at 69 AUGUST 2, 2014 | 02:00PM PT Maane Khatchatourian (http://variety.com/author/maane-khatchatourian/) Oscar-nominated sound mixer (http://variety411.com/us/new-york/sound- mixers/) Walt Martin (http://variety.com/t/walt-martin/) has died. He was 69. Martin worked with Clint Eastwood (http://variety.com/t/clint-eastwood/) on over a dozen movies and earned his Oscar nod for best achievement in sound mixing in 2006 for the war drama “Flags of Our Fathers.” He recently collaborated with Eastwood on the upcoming “American Sniper” and the recently-released “Jersey Boys.” “American Sniper,” which stars Bradley Cooper, just wrapped in June and is set to hit theaters next year. Martin died July 24 of vasculitis after being hospitalized at Burbank’s Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center with chest pains. Martin and Eastwood’s tight-knit working relationship, which began with 1999’s “True Crime,” included best picture Oscar-winner “Million Dollar Baby,” “Mystic River,” “Gran Torino” and “Trouble With the Curve.” Martin also worked with director John Huston in 1987 on his final film, “The Dead,” “Tremors” and “Charlie’s Angels.” He recently did sound mixing on “Mad Men” and “Sons of Anarchy.” He is survived by his wife Elena and step-daughter Claudia. A memorial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Forest Lawn.
  6. John ! I hope NOT to see you in the unemployment line - for the sake of both of us. What a long, strange trip it's been, and you've definitely been a trailblazer along the way. You've banked years and years of people toasting your health, and offering to buy you rounds at any bar in the 13 western states - please allow me to cover your tab anywhere here in Hollywood (or maybe the Chinese province of your choosing?) With great respect and affection - it will _always_ be Coffey Sound on Cahuenga. Thank you for your contributions and support of our community --
  7. Thank you again for the compliments, Mark (I'm in full blush as a result). Most important to note imo is that MY CREW - John Hays and Daniel Quintana - and I really tried to be vigilant and 'defend the sound' at all times. Our relationship with Simon, the director, was quite important - I could ask him, and trust his answers, regarding which part of each camera's setup carried the story-telling audio. (Without Simon's accurate guidance, we might have produced less stellar sound - our DoP was often less-than-collaborative.) Many thanks again for this lavish attention - my crew and I are proud of our work, and we do appreciate the chance to share. Cheers !
  8. Hey, my soundie brothers and sisters -- talking about me while my headphones are unplugged ? Compliments in broad daylight ? All I can say (with both of my Ns) is THANK YOU for the attention and the very kind words. This remake/pilot episode of 'The Saint' was a pleasure to work on, based on the director, actors and crew - and a challenge to record sound for, based on the locations and slim support resources (low budget, doncha' know). I must say that my crew, John Hays and Daniel Quintana, busted their butts to stay ahead of the juggernaut of our schedule and locations, and we enjoyed great support from our director, Simon West. I'm truly flattered to the point of blushing - thanks so much for the shout-out, Mark - and thanks to all you other kind word-givers (many Oscar congrats to you, Simon). I'm really proud to be a part of our community --
  9. Hello, Jeff (& all JWSound posters - and lurkers, like me . . .) Very happy 2013 to you - to quote the most sensitive Beatle, "Got to pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues . . ." Thanks for giving us all a place to shout and leap about - this forum is truly a gem.

  12. I just heard of Gino's passing. He's always been the total, real deal - an assured, classy, fun-loving professional - but he also helped me, a newbie, with advice; and was the best of best on 695's E-Board for three tumultuous decades. Many condolences to Steve and their family. Stand strong, Gino - we're missing you. -- Glenn Berkovitz, CAS
