  1. Thanks for that data point Pat. I have not tried using the keyboard yet, but perhaps it will stay on my back burner for a while as well. The lockups I have been experiencing happen at boot up and with nothing connected. I suspect I got a lemon unfortunately.
  2. Yes, the menu button for 10 sec. - that's what I do to shut it down when it's stuck. But the problem still re-occurs intermittently. I have not had a keyboard plugged into it, nor a WIFI rx. By WIFI rx I assume you are referring to something like the CL-1 WIFI? my understanding is that the 633 does not support that accessory. Is that not the case? Have you seen this behavior yourself? Thanks!
  3. I have been having some strange lock up behavior from my new SD633. I called tech support and we're working to figure it out. SD is an awesome company and I am sure they will deal with it effectively, but I want to put a call out to the other early adopters and see if anyone else has been having similar issues. What happens is this: On first boot-up to the date change dialog, the unit will occasionally lock up for about 60+ sec. After that it will proceed to the main tracks screen, but then it locks up there for good. In this condition it will not respond to any input, including a hard power off / batteries removed / no external power. It's weird - it just sits there with the tracks screen showing and the power switch in the OFF position - yes power switch OFF and unit still showing the locked tracks screen . Anyone else seen lock up issues on the 633?
  4. That's a good point and a fallback if none of the "portable" units are satisfactory. In terms of interferance with other 2.4GHz stuff, the unit would definately need enough smarts to change channels and maybe even manage users through DHCP. Theoretically I should be able to set up an 802.11N network at 5GHz and stay out of most everybody's way. Test before going live - absolutley ! Yes, that is a good idea, in fact it looks like what the bluecowcable guys that Matt linked have done. Definately opens some possiblities. If I get really ambitious I can probably put something together using Raspberry Pi or similar.
  5. Yup sure would but for the AC only part. I have an AC to DC inverter / backup system on the cart but I want to be able to use this w/o that if necessary. Thanks for the input though.
  6. How about a carry-on friendly Pelican 1510? I have a Petrol 601 that when properly adjusted can snuggle into a 1510 ( about 11" wide x 7" deep internally) with most of the gear still in it. That case fits in the overhead and having the bag mostly configured leaves minimum setup time at the destination. Do we have the actual dimensions on the K-Tek bag yet? Anybody? Dave? Don? Beuler?
  7. Thanks Brian I will look at this one. Have you actually used it? BTW, I see you are in Wales - one of my favorit places. Nothing like ducking in out of the chill for Welshcakes and a nice cuppa'. The light is just beautiful there this time of year, and that's coming from a sound guy! Cheersa Good info Matt. I was looking at another one from TP-Link (linked above). You said it runs off a 5V USB supply - does the unit come with a USB supply or are you referring to connecting it to and external source? I would likely run this from NP1's on the cart which are nominally around 12V. Thanks!
  8. Thanks, but those are cellular companies that provide "hotspot" devices which enable connectivity to the Internet through 3G / 4G celular connections. That's not quite what I need. I can understand the confusion though, some of their devices do share that Internet connection through a localized WIFI network, which is similar functionality to what I'm looking for, but their main purpose is to create a wireless WAN. That's more than I need. All I need is a device that will create a local ad hoc network similar to what you can do with a MacBook, w/o having to use a computer. In my application I don't need an Internet connection so I would not want to pay Verizon the monthly charges.
  9. Folks, I'm exploring the option of configuring a portable ad hoc WIFI system, something that can provide networking for WIFI enabled apps on set. I'd like it to be battery or USB powered and small enough for a cart or bag. I realize this may be a bit esoteric here as it is not, strictly speaking, a sound gadget, but our technological scope is expanding and some of the available devices like TimecodeBuddy and Teradek are already bringing their own ad hoc networks into our sound domain. However, at the moment I'm looking for something stand alone to provide just the WIFI. Something along the lines of these devices: TP-Link Hootoo Belkin I have looked at the SD CL1-WIFI, wish it worked with a 744T or 633, but and as far as I can tell it requires the 788 for power and configuration of the WIFI net and cannot be used stand alone. The gadgets linked above look like they would do the job but I thought I would canvas the collective wisdom here first: has anyone had experience with a portable WIFI access point? Thanks!
  10. Makes sense. I don't have a Maxx but the rear facing connectors certainly would need some clearance. And I suppose the physics favors more room below rather than cantilevered out if you're designing in places for NP1's etc. Still holding out for SR friendly elastic and slate size front pouch tho...
  11. Hey Dave, I had a chance to take a look at one of your beta test bags recently and like where you are going with it. I just got the 633 myself but I'm sure disappointed at the dearth of properly designed bags for it. I think you should do well with this offering if it stays within a reasonable budget. That said here are a couple thoughts: I really liked that the handles seem to slide down out of the way. That's one of my pet peeves on some other bags - that handle always manages to get in the way. The K-Tek bag seemed to have a good solution to this. Hope you keep that design. I also thought that the cooling mesh along the back looked like a great idea. I thought that the beta bag I saw was a tad taller (or deeper if you prefer) than necessary. I like that there is accommodation for a 633 with full size batteries on the bottom but I think you could shave .5" to 1" off the height and still have room for the 633 and stuff like NP1, etc, down in the bottom. Might bring the cost down a smidgin too - less material (?) - and help to fit it in a 1650 case as someone requested earlier. Also, regarding your comment earlier about addition of elastic bands to hold 411 size RX's: while I think it would be an improvement over the current wrap-around holders, a major attraction of the 633 is the weight. I for one am looking forward to configuring as light a kit as possible, that means leaving my "big" Lectro 411's in another bag and configuring the 633 kit with Lectro SR's. I'm not sure if there is a way to have an elastic strap that would work for both but I think it would make sense to do so if possible. Finally, I did not have one with me at the time to try it, but is the front pocket large enough to hold a small Denecke slate securely? Thanks and look forward to seeing one for sale! RM
