  1. Think of scans on the ATSC and intergap groups as core samples that give you an overall topography of the RF in your area. When you run those scans, take note of the cleanest group and then rescan that specific group to find the cleanest channels within. I believe they did this to save time because scanning the entire roster of wideband frequencies would take a few minutes at a time. I only have two TXs, so I usually just do a scan on ATSC and then my second scan on intergap and assign my packs to the clearest channel on each.
  2. I shared and sent a message on Facebook with my email a couple of days ago, but I haven't received an entry yet. Is it possible to just PM me one?
  3. Looks cool. I really like my Q28, and this looks like a great option. Do we have to friend you on Facebook and then share a specific post to enter the drawing? A link to that would help.
  4. http://www.slashfilm.com/interstellar-sound-issues/ “The sound mix is my favorite part of the process,” Nolan told Entertainment Weekly. “Your biggest creative decisions have been made—the shoot, the cut of the film—and you’re really in there putting the finishing touches on things or exploring different possibilities. It’s a time of pure imagination, where you can just play.” Maybe he’s just playing too much. Seeing this at TCL Imax tomorrow, hoping that this is just a tech issue. Anybody on this board have a hand in the final mix and want to shed some light on this?
  5. Equipment is negotiable, labor and experience are not ® The interesting part for me, working as an independent contractor, is whether or not I'll ever be able to afford to have a family, a home, and a car in Los Angeles without contributing to eroding rates. So far so good on a home and a car, but it looks like I may have to marry up or find a new line of work if I ever want kids. Sorry mom! ®
  6. Thought I would post here since I'd love to pick up some non-union sit-in and referral jobs in the Los Angeles Area. I've been mixing full time for 2 years and have a couple cable TV features under my belt, among a multitude of corporate and commercial work. I'm also comfortable swinging it or being a utility. I have a small Nomad 10 follow cart for narratives and a 302 bag for smaller OTF and sit down interview jobs. 4 channels of Zaxcom wireless (3 lavs and wireless boom), and 3 ERX IFB. Additionally, I have 2 Wisycom wideband channels with the assortment of COS11-D and DPA 4060 mics. If anything, feel free to refer low-no jobs so I can bid up the equipment and labor rates. I'm going broke turning down these $350/12 all in jobs, but I figure it's time to step it up in educating production about what they can and cannot afford with their budgets. Thanks for reading, and have fun out there!
  7. Don't think so. Usually premium priced models at the top of the line don't cut into the (for lack of a better term) budget models. This is espially true when you get to choose premium add ins that suit your needs. Nomad and Maxx are two different machines for two different types of work. That said, I likely see this update as the death knell for Nomad Lite. Maxx is now clearly a much better investment for those looking to buy into Zaxcom since Maxx can have a taste of the best features of Nomad (AES, up to 6 record tracks, Never clip, etc.) and can add a built in camera link for $100 more than a Lite, which is a no brainer if you ask me. Why would you even consider a Nomad Lite at that point? If you absolutely needed the extra tracks, inputs and routing ability you would be better served stepping right up to a Nomad 10/12. I'm happy with my Nomad 10, but I would trade it in a heartbeat if Zaxcom gave me full ZNet control + IFB + $750 cash difference over my machine. That would be as close to a perfect unit as I could get for my needs. If I had to choose, a camera link would be easy for me to live without.
  8. Zaxnet commands from Maxx TC outout as you put it in the OP. Just curious if you lose TC I/O by enabling Zaxnet or if this will be an additional standard feature out of the box without having to sacrifice anything or buy additional hardware.
  9. Does this make the TC out switchable? If so, when in ZNet mode, what it's the command signal path? Through the Maxx SMA, out of the TC BNC, or some other way?
  10. It's called a Nomad? If they offered IFB on Maxx, it would surely cannibalize the Nomad 10. However, if they offered a camera link module in Nomad 10 I would be all over it.
  11. I attended the panel as well, and the post team said a lot of the pacing was worked out in the edit when Fincher would often layer two takes so he could have absolute control over the dialogue flow. There was one particular shot where editorial showed 5 frames layered on top of each other for the sake of pacing on a medium wide of a dinner conversation. It's very possible that the most efficient way around compositing these shots involved ADR because of overlaps between the chosen takes.
  12. 15+ hours of life and not a single frame out* This little guy is going to come in really handy. *My Nomad reads the TC from Q28 as -3 frames compared to my TS-C when both devices were hard lined at the start of the test.
  13. Is it a Dragon or MX Epic? If a Dragon, what firmware and what are you using to jam 23.98? EDIT: Dragon has a new firmware release today (5.2.28) that supposedly fixes 24/23.98 jamming issues from some TC devices..finally!
  14. Changed permissions on the video, should be good now.
  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAh8wG3zcFU The above video shows that Zaxnet now has the strength to punch through a couple walls when you add this to the cart. The script supervisor was really happy with the range of ERXs overall. The director said it was the best sounding 'Comtek' he's ever heard. They were impressed and so was I. The only dropouts I had were on a bridge surrounded by iron trusses and the first shot of the show when I was still on the Nomad dipole and the director was in the next room. I did a walk test with my boom op and you can see the off axis range in this photo, giving you a nice pocket for folks close behind and to the side of your cart. He's probably 50 feet directly behind me. When facing the fin, you get much, much more. You can barely see him sticking up out from behind a garbage can here. I just used an old boom pole mounted to my cart to get it up and out over the bag and it did really well.
  16. Amazing -EDIT- 3.30 has fixed this bug
  17. Also posted in the Zaxcom forum: I noticed a bug in 3.27 QRX100 dual mode using two TRXs on 8.80 set to XR mono. If your 'A' TRX goes out of range and you power cycle the QRX it will recover the A signal when it is within range. However, if your 'B' TRX goes out of range and you power cycle the QRX you will never be able to recover the signal by itself when it is back within range. To recover both TRX in dual mode again you have to either: 1) Power down both TRX, power cycle the QRX, then power the TRXs back on. I do not believe it matters what order you power cycle the TRX. I tried AB and BA and they both worked. 2) Switch the RX mode on 'B' to US mono, power cycle the QRX, then manually change 'B' back to XR mono. If that doesn't work, then change both A and B to US mono and power cycle the QRX. Let it auto change A to XR mono, then you can manually change B to XR and it should pick back up (if TRX B is within range)
  18. Summing the boom and lav tracks would only sound worse than using a mono mix. Pick one and forever hold your peace! Also, introduce your editor to a program called Pluraleyes so he can save time on synching and have more time at the end of the day to complain about his job to whoever will listen.
  19. I haven't had any issues with going through walls so far. One set up I was in the middle of a house going through 3 walls out to video village on the front lawn and no drops. Yesterday was in the downstairs of a church sending Zaxnet to my boom op and ERX camera hop to an upstairs room through plaster and cement walls, also no drops.
  20. I've had a week with the unit and my first impressions are good. I'm using a Nomad 10 with Zaxnet TX power at 7 and testing with ERX2TCD and TRX992 IFB. Running straight off the Nomad's SMA up a mast to the BNC input on the antenna using a simple 10ft SMA -> BNC cable from Trew, no in-line amplification. Line of sight outside, I was able to get around 600ft with the fins facing the ERX and around 50ft with someone standing opposite the fins. I was worried that I would have to switch to my dipole in situations where I had to be set up in front or to the side of video village, but I was pleasantly surprised that I was covered by a 'spill' of Zaxnet that blanketed 40-50ft sphere on X, Y, and -Z axis. There was a scene with camera on a wide lens, on the balcony directly above me, shooting down the nave of a chapel and there was enough reach to go through the floor to send scratch track and TC. I was running a camera return via an SDI hard line from village's monitor with a TC overlay. Everything worked just fine. Aside from performance, the biggest pluses are the form factor and weight. It weighs about 3lbs, with most of the weight being a milled aluminum block. It has three most common mic mounting threads so you have a wide variety of ways to integrate it into your set up without having to buy step up or step down adapters. I have pictures and video of some of the tests that I may post at a later date, but this one's looking like a good buy for any Zaxnet cart.
  21. Whitney nailed it about learning by doing. Nothing is 100% so make sure you have a plan B on standby. This thread got me thinking about how movies were made before wireless technology advanced to the point where we could bury mostly reliable radio mics in wardrobe. Perhaps careful planning (i.e. blocking) and coordination with every department so you, as the mixer, can place your mics where you want them in and around the frame without them being seen? Oh man...I'm turning into the Senator...
  22. There's at least one fan facing upward buried in the rear chasse of the camera, but they've gone through the trouble to install a water cooling system so I'm hopeful this guy will run quieter than most.
  23. Always a good idea to ground yourself, good suggestion. Make sure the table top is clean, give yourself plenty of light, and give yourself at least half an hour so you aren't rushing.
