  1. Jeff, I've run into this sync message before and Charlie assures that it's not a problem. It will happen when I jam from the Deva V, but not from the 744. I usually use the Deva as the master TC clock and I've never had a problem with drift. As Glenn Sanders states, it has to do with the way the TC output is created; 29.97 is all there, but the Denecke thinks its getting something slightly different. NTW. Now making sure that dip switches are set correctly, cross jams are done properly, and having the necessary connectors on hand-that is a job of concern unto itself.
  2. I had the opportunity to work with Gabriel on a few projects through the course of time spent at the "Lightstone" school, and also had the pleasure of having him boom for me on other projects. Gabe was a Gentleman and a Pro. I never saw him nervous and he always seemed to know the shot. He also did not say much which I think was a testament to his character and spirit; he was smart and well read, had good stories and interesting points of view, but he never advertised it. He didn't have to. He just did his thing. Even during some trying and painful moments, he still did his thing. Some people keep their best inside and I believe Gabe was one such person. He will be missed.
  3. Yes, Jeff I do it all the time and it seems to hold fine. You just have to remember to back up 1 file(the machine only lets you back up 1 file during record) from the "Next" file deck in the Sc/Take section. I don't know how the 'Pre-Roll' set up or the 'Continuous Mirror' affects this function.
  4. Unless one has plenty of time to go back and change scene numbers, it is essential that there is a file number attached to the file. I use the 744 as a back up to the Deva and it has gone offline many times. It is not hard, but you can catch up. The "Caught Up" file appears in the order of which it was burnt, and can drive many people mad. After changing the drives in the housing, and sending it to SD for maintenance, the solution was purchasing an entire new dvd drive from SD. I still use the old ones, with much tepid success, but the Deva is a bit more intuitive in terms of Start and Stopping of the mirror functions(You can also change the scene #/take during recording). Both machine perform flawlessly with attached external HDs. This would be a great way to go when disc recording becomes obsolete.
  5. Jon, The easiest way to extend your range would be to, yes, hard-line and remote your receivers. There also has to be something said with creating a workable antenna system. Running out 2 50 ohm cables is easier than 4 XLR lines/snake day after day. There is a lot of work to having an antenna system, but you should consider having at least one setup like an SNA or Sharkfin in your kit if you don't have it already. Look for a used multicoupler, or look into getting a wideband multicoupler from Lectro. That gives a great spin to your multiple blocks. George Flores
  6. Mick, I just upgraded to a new Xantrex Inverter/Charger and Coffey Sound(Forrest Forbes) is putting in an on-off switch for the fan. This new model(2008) seems to be lighter than the last generation Prosine models. As Ken and others will attest, the 01v96 is a fine mixer and has a lot to offer, yet, you may end up redesigning your entire cart around it. You can run the Yamaha on straight A/C on set as long as there is some power conditioning/shutdown protection, but the inverter configuration gives the mixer peace of mind not having to worry about possible shutdowns and clean efficient power. Check out the Xantrex site and the inverter section.(Freedom HF 1000W)
  7. Richard, I have one of the original Trew Audio wooden/pvc boom stands going back to "Hidden Hills" and it is still in use today. By the way Glen, your R.Audio Antenna Bar has gotten a few compliments as of late, however Skylor says it's discontinued also.
  8. No worries, Paul. I've actually reconsidered my options, and will do something a little different. Thanks, Jim Jim: Backstage Equipment did a modification on a Magliner cart I own(lowered the nose) so as to make it easier to load in my car(Honda Element). No matter what type of cart one purchases, it will probably be modified based on your needs(and imagination). George Flores
  9. I heard that Boom Op. David Allen Smith died recently. I know he had been ill. Does anyone have any information? It would be a shame for him to be overlooked. He was dedicated sound man, and a fun and talented guy.
  10. You can also burn your files to an external FW drive, have the editor transfer them into FC, and burn your DVD-RAM later(or not at all). George Flores
  11. There was an error in the credit listings for "Rush Hour 3" in that, my name was mistakenly placed with Jeff Wexler's under Production Sound Mixer for the main unit. With help from Bob Maxfield and a thumbs-up from Jeff, I wound up mixing three days on a "Stunt/Additional Photog. Unit"; Very exciting indeed, yet, it does not give any green light to say 'I did the sound for the movie'. That credit belongs to Jeff, Don Coufal, Robert Maxfield, and the support staff that assisted them in the U.S. and Europe. To be credited this way overshadows the fine work that this team consistently performs, and it's just not fair to Jeff. In our profession we all know it's nice to have your name on a big film, however, it's sometimes nicer to know that you earned it as well. George Flores
