  1. Anybody remember Tom Hanks on Saturday Night Live's Wayne's World sketch as Aerosmith's roadie (Wayne's Cousin)? He tested the mic as "Checking one, two sibilance, sibilance, testing one two, sibilance, sibilance". I always found that hilarious, even before I was a sound person.
  2. Hey guys, this might sound like a stupid question, but it's one I'm still trying to understand: Why are some projects union and some non-union? To me, the benefits of a union (to production) is the high level of skill, the organization and it's regulations and standards, and the overall dependability. So I wonder, Is it always a choice for the production to go union or non union? And therefore just generally understood that if you want to make large budget feature or tv show that you go union? What, if anything, allows a (for example) reality TV show to hire non union? And what, if anything, stops a big budget production from being non union? Thanks guys!
  3. Seems to be the norm to have them in plain site with a clip on the cooking shows I've watched, but I don't watch a whole lot. If it's no audience and 1 or 2 people then they're hidden (or boomed) but with audiences and 3+ I see lavs mics in plain view. Just might observations, sorry I can't really help much with the micing, good luck!
  4. I've done a lot of DSLR short films on 5D and 7D and simply let the camera roll it intern mic just for reference to dialogue when they're listening back. To me, the pumping and breathing on the audio levels, and the fact that you can't monitor levels kills me. I would be extremely hesitant to even send wireless to the camera, because even if it's fine moosttt of the time, they're not going to go to the iso's when there a small clip, or the room tone just punched up through silence from the 'auto' level compression. I've heard from other people that too often the iso's aren't used and the mix to camera is, so if the DSRL audio test for the setup weren't useable to my hears (Enough so that I would put my name on it) then I would fight tooth and nail to get them to see that it's not an option. I'd even offer to sync the audio myself if there issue to budget!
  5. I agree 100% with you guys, especially when referring to Camera AC's. I think a good way to argue is to say "Okay, so is the DOP pulling focus?" Or even "Is the focus puller doing all the slating/ lens fetching?". "No" would be the rsponse. No, because those jobs all have duties that 'fill up' one person! I think we need to collectively support each other by always arguing for a boom operator: not just to make the work efficient/get the job done correctly, but to keep our fellow soundmen working. On a related note: I did a 2 month gig on a Union TV show as a sound assistant, the 4th in the sound team (Mixer, Boom 1, Boom 2, Assistant), and from working my butt off to make sure everything went as smooth as it could, the exec producer and production manager (among others) were convinced that a 4th Sound Person is the way to go.
  6. I would enjoy a post production category, especially if it means that I'd be able to talk post production to a lot of people who have actually been out in the field and know the whole workflow from Location Mic to Home Speaker

  11. Just shot a feature with one and was rolling reference audio from it's on board mic, will let you know how it sounds when I get the files
  12. I went to OIART (Ontario Institue of Audio Recording Technology) and would definitely do it again. Sure I could have just gone out into the world knowing things I read on the internet, which have a high likelihood of being wrong or impractical, but the experience of school and the knowledge you gain,especially in the fields you didn't even think you'd be into, were definitely worth it. I went out to get a job confident in my skills and knowledge and couldn't be happier with my descision. Hope that helps!

  14. Glen Gauthier mixed Total Recall but that's besides the point. Good to know that Canada based productions are using Canadian talent (or at least a mix)
  15. I'm curious as to what you guys opinion are of the Canadian share of American Hollywood, mostly talking (This year in Toronto) about Total Recall and Resident Evil 5 (I don't know if the sound crew was local or not).

  18. Cannot get enough of the pendulum video, makes me think about tuning pitches and beat frequencies. Also The Simpsons vid was awesome, didn't see that episode!
  19. Just joined Toronto's IATSE 873 Union and am now calling in my availability everyday via their automated phone system. I'm wondering what else I can do to get that 'first call' happen sooner? (Other than general Toronto FIlm Industry networking on Indie sets). Should I be calling up people from current shows seeing if there's a spot or just keep calling in my status and pray for rain?
