  1. Hi All, I found an old 1980 Bruel and Kjaer 4125 measurement mic that was given to me, while going through my old bits and pieces. I've never had this mic hooked up at all but it still has me intrigued. I would like to hear it at least once before it goes back into the box. I have the accompanying "type 2810 power supply" that appears to have a "battery" function. I cracked open the box but there is no battery slot that I can see. The mic itself is quite DPA-like, very miniature with a mini lemo connector. I don't see a battery compartment in the mic body either. Perhaps I could have the connector adapted for a more common power supply? The printed info label on the mic capsule storage vial says the following: Type 4125 Condenser Microphone Cartridge, Open circuit sensitivity at 1013 mbar, 23 degrees Celcius and 50% R.H. 140.8 dB re. 1 V per Pa. Capacitance : 14.5 pF (typically), Polarization voltage : 28 V, Frequency : 250 Hz, Date : 3-11-80 If anyone has any ideas about how to power this mic or has used one before, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks kindly and have a great evening. Cheers, Dave
  2. Hi All, Just added my first Microdot connector Lav to my set-up - a DPA 4061. Now researching microdot adapters and am comparing the DPA adapters to the AKG versions. I am needing to use the 4061 with Sennheiser G3 wireless, at least for the next while. Are these Microdot adapters universal or interchangeable? Here's the AKG version : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1192234-REG/akg_6500h00310_mda3_sen2_microlite_microphone.html versus the DPA version: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/390976-REG/DPA_Microphones_DAD6034_DAD6034_MicroDot_to_Locking.html Would there be any technical and/or quality difference between the 2 brands? I also see an "off shore" brand available elsewhere but a little hesitant about that, unless anyone has a favourable reliability rating for these. Lastly, any issues with DPA 4061 with XLR microdot adapter into Sound Devices 302? How is mic safely drawing power from 302? Thanks for sharing your expertise and experiences - very kind. Best Regards, Dave Mc.
  3. Hi All, Was checking out this Bill Frisell concert on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loMqVClAWz4 Had my head in the sweet spot (equilateral triangle between left and right speakers). I noticed that the guitar seemed to appear right in front of me - and very forward, as if coming right to me. If i move my head slowly between the speakers, I can hear a very narrow but distinct centre. Not sure if I'm hearing a stereo mix or dual mono - nonetheless an interesting feeling that the instruments/music is coming right to me, as opposed to feeling distant coming from the stage. Curious to see what y'all might hear. Thanks. Cheers, Dave
  4. Hi All, After reading the recent post showing the photoshop mockup of a Sound Devices 302 mixer with a built-in 3 track recorder, it got me thinking : The Fostex DC-R302 that I have is a 3 input to stereo recorder. From a technical standpoint, how hard do you think it would it be for Fostex to increase the track count from stereo to 3 or 4 tracks? This would be a cool upgrade if at all possible :-) Would this be a software tweak or be limited by the hardware? The meters only show left and right but maybe a software workaround? Thought I'd run it by you guys before checking in with Fostex. Thanks very much. Cheers, Dave
  5. Hi All, I can't even imagine what this sound was like at the location - scary low end, in more ways than one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC3VTgIPoGU Makes you think. Cheers, Dave
  6. Hi All, I found this new camera support device , the Rodcam to be very interesting. Kind of like a boom with extreme reach. I wonder if it would have any use for flying a mic in large sets and spaces... who knows? Anyhow, enjoy the video demo on this page : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly7VwaGYNsY Cheers Everyone, Dave
  7. Thanks for responding Jack. Would this be considered a "basic or standard" kit in Canada (or elsewhere) ? Sound Devices 633, SD 302 and 2 track backup recorder, boom mic(s), 2 wireless lavs, camera hop Thanks again. All the best, Dave
  8. New, interesting stereo mic coming from Rode : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RscPsKiFXI http://www.rodemic.com/svmx Curious about the sound sample in the video clip - recorded on the DSLR shown or another device??? No mention. The flamenco guitar clip doesn't seem Kosher - overdubbed solo, maybe flown in from another clip? Apparently made of aluminum rather than plastic which is nice. Cheers, Dave
  9. Hi All, I was following the "basic package" - "standard kit" thread from a week or two ago, but didn't see any posts regarding what constitutes a "basic bag kit" and appropriate rates for such in Ontario, Canada and whether it's the basically same as U.S., Aus, U.K. How do ENG, Doc and corporate gigs in Canada compare regarding outlining a basic kit/gear package? Thanks for any discussion...very kind :-) Cheers, Dave
  10. Hi Everyone, Wow, thanks for all the great info and taking the time to gather links - very generous of you. My vintage Fender and Rickenbacker cables just might be rockin' again... if I don't mess up :-)) Cheers, Dave
  11. Thanks Guys, Appreciate your tips. By "best" I meant a tool that I can handle as a total beginner and not find too tricky and not burn anything down :-)) For audio soldering is it "solid core" or "lead free" solder that one uses? My old cables thank you:-) Cheers, Dave
  12. Hi all, Did a search for "soldering" but didn't find a recommendation for a basic soldering gun/iron kit for a novice repair. I've got an ever growing pile of good cables that I'd love to fix - mainly 1/4 " guitar cords and XLR mic cables. Is there a good soldering kit that you'd recommend? In the meantime, back to the Youtube videos to learn more :-)) Thanks for your kind advice. Keep well, Dave
  13. Hi to all fellow Canadians, Just wondering if anyone is based out of Windsor, Ontario and if there is much of a film, video, television production scene and work there? Any spill over from Detroit? Thanks kindly for sharing your experience. Keep well! Cheers, Dave
  14. Hi Jay, Sorry, haven't tried the Tascam DSLR unit. But, I also have a Tascam HD-P2 and the Fostex DC-R302 sounds as good, if not better to me, if that means anything :-) The first reviewer on this BH Photo page does a good job talking a bit about the Fostex DC-R302 compared to the Tascam DR-60. He likes having physical knobs and switches and I find this a big plus too. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846034-REG/Fostex_DC_R302_DC_R302_3_Channel_Audio_Mixer.html I'd love to hear your and Ty's take on both units. Nice to chat! Cheers, Dave
  15. Hi Ty, I have/use a Fostex DC-R302 with a Canon DSLR and Pluraleyes. I've also used it for recording live-off-the-floor stereo mic singer-songwriter demos and it sounded musical, full and pleasing. I really like it - small and light but well built out of metal, not plastic, 3 XLR inputs, preamps sound good, integrates with DSLR with start-stop feature, can mount under camera. The downsides might be lack of XLR outputs (RCA only), no timecode, goes through AA batteries pretty fast, esp with phantom on, and "just" 2 tracks. The unit itself is very small so the buttons are also quite tiny which might not be good for some hands but still workable. For the current price of $650 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846034-REG/Fostex_DC_R302_DC_R302_3_Channel_Audio_Mixer.html it's a great sounding, solid tool..... original price was $1,000. The current software revision is solid. I'm going to hook it up to my Sound Devices 302 mixer to compare preamps. Although I've yet to try it, you can use it as a basic usb interface into a computer but I've heard there is some latency? Anyhow, my two cents worth. Cheers! All the best, Dave
  16. Excellent. Thanks everyone - exactly what I was wanting to learn about. All the best, Dave
  17. Thanks gentlemen - excellent help. Very kind of you. All the best, Dave
  18. Hello, I was recently watching the "behind-the-scenes/making-of" DVD for the British period drama "Downton Abbey". The sound mixer mentioned that all the characters were wired for primary dialogue and boom mics/shotguns were used mainly for atmosphere. With all the intricate period costumes and many characters in a scene, I was curious about the lav/wireless sytems used and how it is all dealt with. Forgive me for not catching the sound mixers name, but I certainly admire his work and the scope of the series. Thanks kindly, Dave
  19. Hi All, Would anyone know of any sources for assorted bag-oriented custom audio cables in Toronto or Hamilton, Ontario, Canada? (In addition to Trew Audio and Audio Services). Thanks for any tips.... much appreciated. Have a great day. Cheers, Dave
  20. Hi to anyone with a Fostex DC-R302, Just a note that there is a relatively new 1.25 firmware update available for the Fostex DC-R302 at the Fostex Japan site here : http://www.fostex.jp/version_up/275 (The Fostex International site does not include this latest update - disappointing.) You'll have to use Google translate to see details of the update, but it does seem like an improvement from the previous version. Don't know if any Fostex reps frequent this group? Can I make a friendly suggestion? It would be most customer centric service if Fostex could ensure that all software updates also appear on the international site with dates and details of the updates, including previous update histories. This would be most appreciated and is usually standard procedure with companies who care about customer experience. Thanks very much :-)) Have a pleasant day. Cheers, Dave
  21. Hi All, I've been looking around to see what's currently available in external Thunderbolt hard drives. I don't see much in the affordable category. I did spot this Thunderbolt hard drive Dock which might pair well with a Solid State Drive: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/985459-REG/highpoint_5212_2_bay_thunderbolt_10gb_s_storage.html I have a similar Vantec dock with firewire which was 1/4 the price and it's served me well. Is anyone using a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adaptor and getting good results? When you do use an adaptor do you get Thunderbolt speeds? Thanks for your tips and keep well! Cheers, Dave
  22. Hi Again, Just for anyone else needing to record Skype interviews, this looks pretty good : http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/ Hope to try it and report back. Thanks again, Ciao, Dave
