  4. I was thinking more in terms of damage liability... I guess you could just add them to the list of really expensive stuff we bring to work every day. Definitely a cool idea... I bet we see it in our lifetime - on set, in production... at least in certain locales ; )

  6. Yeah, wow... where to begin... I'll just say this: There's a term one might learn in economics (basic 100-level shit, mind you) that has to do with "what the market will bear..." If one is feeling jaded about their chosen career path, perhaps that person should consider altering that path (maybe even going out, purchasing an H4N, ME66, and a painters pole, and posting ads on CL)... You're right though - it does kinda beg the question, "why go to college?" ...though if $ is all one desires, there are far more lucrative paths than college education OR freelance sound mixing. I suspect many people go to college simply to better themselves. OK, I admit, I read this thread and posted this reply sitting behind my sound cart, between set-ups, on a union network episodic production... so I know I'm probably not the intended audience. That said, any way you slice it, it's a war of attrition (almost 25 yrs. here)... and regardless of the particulars of ones chosen path, that person will most likely succeed (or fail) based largely on their character. Bottom line, life is short - enjoy it, whatever you do ; ) ~tt

I've used the M216-P7 on my cart for years - it frequently outperforms my Lectro IFB (I use this for my Boom Op) in terms of range... even punching through 5 floors of concrete in an old department store on one gig - it worked swimmingly... and that's sitting on top of my 10RU box, using the supplied antenna. Every once in a while, I'll run into a situation where the PR216's get some static, but that's pretty rare, and never enough to justify an upgrade. Short answer: IMHO, the M216P7 is just fine for most cart-based work. ~tt

There's not much you can do - like Tom said, either quit the gig (or threaten to)... or accept it and possibly re-negotiate next "season"... though they will likely just hire someone else and do the same thing to them. For future reference, maybe make sure the deal memo has some of your interests listed as well - contracts should be mutually beneficial... so you could include provisions for cancellations, guaranteed hours, etc... union or not - there should still be some kind of deal memo. ~tt

  11. I mixed a few episodes of Nat Geo's Doomsday Preppers, and have run into a few instances where the featured participants were running some kind of Hydrogen voodoo. The technology is definitely advancing, but keep in mind if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is... ("blah blah blah... 1st Law of Thermodynamics... blah blah blah") ~tt
  12. I use this pole from time to time - yeah, it's difficult to wield when fully extended - even with something light on the end. The good news is that though it's internally cabled, the cable is straight (not coiled) thankfully. It's rare that one needs a pole of that length these days, but it's sure nice to know you have it when you need it. (place innuendo jokes here) ~tt
  13. Thanks Jon, That's exactly what I'm doing... I've been doing the "bag-cart" hybrid thing for a while, but have always re patched the individual XLR's when I go "off-cart"... I've wanted to get some cables like that for a while (and can finally afford them)... Moving forward and sticking with the Cooper on the cart, I'll likely have some Canare 27-pin fan outs built up by the folks at HAVE Inc. Expensive, but a good company, and totally worth the $ like you said. ~tt

  15. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the sentiment regarding my standards vs. those of my clients. I really love this mixer, and know I'd likely never get what it's actually worth - to me anyhow. I consider it a piece of history. I use the cart in this current incarnation quite a bit (on a 4-month+ shoot right now), and I really like Metacorder too, but the requirements for a stable Metacorder system are outweighing the benefits at this point (literally.) I think I got what I needed out of this thread... (thanks again JWSound) I'll likely build a smaller cart around the Cooper and a detachable 788T bag rig with a CL8. ~tt

  17. Hey all, I'm hoping to get some opinions here (I'm sure that won't be a problem)... I'm thinking about selling my Cooper 208 and eliminating my Metacorder setup. Part of me hates to even say that, but it's where I am right now. In their place, I'll just use a 788T and either CL8 or CL9, depending on the job. The impetus for this is to wind up with a much smaller, MUCH lighter "cart" with essentially the same capabilities. I'd be eliminating the following: Grundorf 10RU box Cooper 208 mixer Pelican 1300 case w/ 30AH battery 110AH AGM battery, Xantrex 1800i sine wave inverter MacMini and keypad 2 ext. HD's Furman Power Cond. (1RU) ...basically, a lot of weight and redundancy that seems to be no longer needed. I'd be building a new bag-based cart (upright / hand truck style) with a 788T and Lectro 411a's as described above. I absolutely love my Cooper mixer, but I wonder if I'll ever get to a level where my clients even know the difference. The Cooper is an amazing mixer, and I'll likely regret selling it, but the quality one can achieve these days with equipment like the 788T and CL9 or CL8 is such that it's getting harder and harder to justify having all this other stuff. I guess what I'm asking for is the opinion of those who have either made a similar jump, or have decided against it - and the reasoning behind those decisions. I know ultimately only I can make the decision, but input from experienced Soundies here on JW has always been of high value. Thanks in advance for any opinions you're willing to voice. ~tt
