I worked the TED conference in Vancouver a month ago and the Wired conference in NYC the other day and at both places I had some free time and was able to play around with the VR1 (similar to the Oculus Rift). The first instance involved a completely CG video and, using headphones, I was a little disappointed in myself in retrospect. I was so captivated by the video and the world that I failed to analyse the way they had used sound in the environment. Unfortunately the second time I used the headset, while still impressive visually, there was no headphones available so I wasn't able to put the sound design to the test. I started thinking about how sound would work in a completely free roaming 360 degree environment. In video games for instance, objects have a programmed location and with headphones on, they can place that sound anywhere sonically that they want to. But does it work that way with VR video? When using VR headsets for video games, I'd assume that it works the same way it would on a normal screen, but for a narrative video, do the deliverables for VR formats lend themselves to the same level of manipulation? If a film is shot entirely with 360 degree cameras, the information about what objects are where isn't programmed into the video. For example, if there was an idling car in a scene, how would I place that sound so no matter where I was looking, that car would sound like it was in the same place while factoring in the inter-aural arrival time differences. Is there currently software available that has the capability to program all objects to point within an environment for purpose of VR film making? Hopefully my question is clear, it's a bit difficult to articulate given how little info I actually have about VR and video game sound in general.
  2. I worked on a Doc a couple weeks back where the camera operator decided to wear corduroy pants... I made him walk bow legged for half the day before he swapped pants with the PA haha. Most people seem to get a kick out of my "no MOS" hat and "Lav 'em and leave 'em" PSS gear.
  3. I do as well, they are very popular for equipment insurance in the sound community. Liability insurance is not necessary unless you are running an LLC and even then I don't think it's mandatory.
  4. I'd caution against using too much in Blocks 22 and 23, one or two wireless in each should be fine, but neither one is very hospitable. Most other blocks are pretty clear.

  7. I have one of those behind me for sure. I've worked on several features at this point from good to bad, but there Is only one I'd say enters the realm of offensively terrible. They are re-editing it now (for the third time) and from my recent conversations with one of the producers, it's even worse than I thought it might be when we shot it. I'll try and update this when it's out, should be mid summerish. They somehow managed to sell the thing so it could get limited theatrical release across the US (digital distribution at the very least). If anyone is the masochistic type, it might be a good torture outlet for you.
  8. I was curious about his silly "no JWSOUND links" rule especially since he allows ebay links (tho only ones with international shipping...). The facebook WTB/FS group is very useful if not bizarrely modded by him. For some reason he wanted to add bicycle sales as well, but that got shot down quick by the group members haha.

  10. I rent out my ERX2TCD at $25/day for scratch audio. If it will be used as a sync box, I add it together with my slate and bundle the two as a $75/day "timecode package".

  12. I did not foresee a sequel to Crouching Tiger... As one of my favorite movies of all time, all I can hope for is that it's half as good as the first. And also, I imagine that it will be a much better experience in an IMAX theater. As far as movies to choose to release on Netflix simultaneously with a theatrical release, this is an odd choice IMO. There are many genres of movies that I can easily skip seeing in theaters and enjoy at home, but a Crouching Tiger sequel doesn't seem like one of them. Either way, I haven't been this excited for a movie in a long time. Can't wait.
  13. You are only getting 4 hours out of an iPower 9v in UMs? I usually get 6-7 hours in my UM TX with ipowers depending on how old they are.

  15. I've asked other departments if they have any sort of real community center where they talk about work and techniques and it seems pretty uniformly that they don't. Production sound seems to have a uniquely awesome community and I'm continually grateful to be a part of it. No other departments, and I'm sure rarely in any industry, have this kind of personal connections with other professionals and manufacturers and it's pretty fantastic. Gearslutz has a pretty good community, but it's much much larger and therefore often less personal than it is here.
  16. I'd love it if the PFL buttons worked for the ISO tracks on playback. It would make checking playback very easy to just PFL tracks 1-10 and turn off PFL to hear the mix on playback.

  18. I use Switronix NP1s to power my bag. I often find myself working in studio/office type locations a lot and running my bag off battery power almost seems like a waste of battery life since I'm sitting in one place for interviews all day. There are obviously many ways to power my gear off AC (Nomad + Lectros), but I was wondering if there is anything out there that is an NP1 shaped AC power unit that can easily slide into my NP1 cup. It would make any changes to mobile battery power very quick and not having to re patch power cables would be great. I looked around but I haven't seen anything like that out there. Any thoughts?
  19. Same exact issue happened to me on a movie last month. Two Epics, neither of which would jam from my ERX or Nomad (eventually one jammed from Nomad only) but instantly synced with a deneke SB-3. Turned out the editor wasn't using TC to sync, so after three days I just gave up on it. I would have loved to have gotten an hour or so to mess with it to figure it out, but schedules did not allow, oh well.
  20. Interesting points on contractor vs employee (sorry if I'm taking this thread too far off course). Seems like we get pieces of both sides, but mostly in the independent contractor part.   21. Independent contractors are not subject to minimum wage laws, only employees (and not all employees). That may mean that if you are strictly invoice/W9 you can work for pretty much whatever you want. I believe it's only if you are on payroll that minimum wage laws come into effect.   24. I quite disagree with you Mr. Senator. While the shotgun may not be nearly as precise as a rifle, the spray pattern, I believe, greatly resembles the pick up pattern of a "shotgun" mic a la MKH416: While shotgun mics are very directional, I hardly think the pinpoint accuracy of a rifle could be comparable. Perhaps a parabolic mic could be the "rifle" mic? Also, to continue the analogies, should an omni then be considered a "land mine" or "grenade" mic?
