  1. I was in the same boat a while back. Ultimately, I settled on the USBPre2 (and haven't regretted it). I use RME interfaces in my studio, and really love them. They are SUPER stable, the converters sound fantastic and open, and the clocking is really good. What ultimately attracted me to go for the SD was that I felt it would ALS be a good interface for the occasional playback gig. I really appreciate having access to all of the vital setting via dip switch. The I/O options are also very good and don't require a fan-out. It powers itself via USB... And can work as a stand alone pre/mixer. I rented it out to the prop dept recently for a police recon scene, and it was just the look they wanted. Fwiw: I did buy before the price increase (I don't think I would hesitate if I were to have to do it again, though) I think you'll be happy either way you go
  2. I've worked on many a job where if you just let Steve get his shot, he'll respect your space. With him, it really is a battle of mutual respect. Once you start pushing, he pushes back harder. It's tricky, because he knows the law (and his rights) inside and out.
  3. Jan can obviously chime in to answer this herself… but just a guess- Drill a hole, tie a knot.
  4. While a small DC powered mixer with Dante would be a great addition, personally, I would love to see something along the lines of a compact db25->Dante converter. Something akin to the lectro BOB, but in a tighter, more ruggedized package (say, the size of a downconverter). This way, we could continue to interface our analog mixers of choice with all of this new tech.
  5. I'm curios to see more about these. Just looking at this video, the new zep appears to have more solid plastic than their current and past models (read: weight). I loooooved the DPA Windpac. It's such a shame that they discontinued them. They were extremely light weight, portable, and effective. I vaguely remember the balance being a bit strange - Nothing one couldn't get used to, though. I really which I had bought one (or more) when I had the chance.
  6. I agree. The only thing I'll be curious to see is how track routing and metadata will be handled. I'm really fond of having an easily accessible pre-programmed "notes" field ala Deva. I also like the ability to dynamically route my inputs to tracks in the recorder. I suspect it will be nearly identical to the Pix series, but I haven't had a lot of hands on time with those machines. I would have a pre order in now if they had de-coupled the inputs 1/2 from the DB25 inputs. Not that I foresee ever needing them, but I've always hoped for a recorder with 8 plus "Mix" analog ins.
  7. Jesus! What jobs are you doing!? You only have 10 fingers! An old adage I try to remember from time to time: "if you can't mix it on four faders, there is a problem with the scene"
  8. I have to say that I agree with this. I am of two minds on the subject, however. On one hand, the incentives have meant a massive boon in work for us here in NYC. This has allowed me to recently buy an apartment, raise my daughter without financial worry, and live a generally comfortable life. However, at heart, I am still the type to want to buck the system (down with The Man, and all of that). These programs are just another unfortunate case of corporate welfare. In an time where studio profits are at record highs, so is greed. As long as any state is offering an incentive, productions will flock there. I feel the exact same about oil and coal substitutes (and don't get me started on GE). A bit of a tangent, maybe, but it's all a part of the same picture. We are stripping public schools of arts programs, PE, and even books "because we just can't afford it", yet these corporate giants get huge tax bailouts because they have us over a barrel!? This is money that could go toward improving the education and heath care in this country! It's infuriating. So yes, while I have benefitted from these incentive programs, it feels like dirty money. The fact that many of the LA contingent of this board have felt stretched due to runaway productions is not okay. We should all be able to enjoy the fruits of our craft. It's time to put an end to this nonsense. I grew up in baltimore, and am glad to see some real production work there. I would hate to see HoC leave for the wrong reasons. At the same time, I'm glad (whether sincere or not) that someone has stood up to the bullying. Sorry for the run-on rant.
  9. I have a 6x6 pelsue in black. I love the thing. I asked how much it would cost to re-skin it (as it's starting to show its 10+ years), I was quoted something in the $700 range (ouch!). I don't think they stock these any longer. I've seen black pelsues since. Somatic go for about double the cost of the white, new
  10. I'm not pretending to have any insight, but on some of the higher end sennheiser Tx, you can flash program multiple channels via IR. When I worked in reality tv, I REALLY wanted an option to sync coordinated frequencies between multiple Rx (instead of programming user groups manually x30 Rx). Maybe something along these lines?
  11. You are referring to an entirely different world than the OP. Difficult to compare, really. I'm on board with CM (as far as dramatic work goes). Time at base-camp is time away from lighting and framing decisions that could have a very real impact on carpeting, boom coverage, etc.
  12. Another option would be to divide the braided shield into 3 strands, and attach 1 to each of the three gnd pins. I've resorted to this approach lately, as I find the individual tinned strands add a bit of rigidity. It's also a bit easier (and I feel safer) than crossing adjacent hot pins. 6 in 1...
  13. Not sure if you could get it to work with your page turner, but recently, I've become a BIG fan of Notability (for iOS). It will at least handle the highlighting for you in an elegant way. I also use it for general note taking, sketching, etc. it's wonderful for scouts as you can snap photos from within the app, and easily add notes and captions. I think it costs around $3, which is a total steal (in my opinion)
  14. Thanks for that. I revised the link immediately after posting, but I suppose it didn't take for some reason or another
  15. I'm with crew here... I also happen to be a huge NY fan. He is a very charitable artist (with his causes, his music, and his opinions). If you ask me, we could use more people like him, who stand up for what they believe, damn the consequences.
  16. I don't have mine wired to a bds, but have it wired to an output on the MEON. Just to be safe, I added a ferrite choke. Not saying that issues are not possible (or even likely), just that in my experience, I haven't had any.
  17. I forget who it was (maybe Eric Toline?), but a while back I got the recommendation for this eliminator from either this board or RAMPS, and it's worked flawlessly for years. I just snipped off the wall wart, and added my DC connect of choice. http://www.qcavionix.com/be-9.php?cat=20503 I had to file a small cable exit in the battery door, but it didn't require too much surgery
  18. Sounds like you have more of a mailing address issue. I don't see what this directly has to do with Gotham or their customer service. Just call and correct the mailing address. Seems simple to me. +100 to what Sean said above.
  19. This is how it is in NY. Local 52 oversees many crafts (incl. Sound, Grip, and Elec). As far as I can tell, this actually gives us MORE leverage at the negotiating table. We are a strong local, and we all have one another's backs. The fact that many of it's member base would rather hitch their wagons to a larger national organization seems to speak to the strength that 695 has as a local. From my vantage, 600 is actually a bit over saturated as it is (and thus has a bit less muscle with which to negotiate). They seem to be happy to accept anyone with an open checkbook, thus admitting a glut of low-hanging fruit. One example that comes to mind is the forfeiting of the Prevailing Rate meal penalty. If other locals hadn't retained this, there would be very little financial reason to EVER break a crew! While I agree that the ASA loopholes should be dealt with, I feel that it would be better addressed by the international itself. Maybe that is exactly what this is all about. Wyatt Tuzo
  20. Look into getting or making an MC-41 cable. I made mine as 6" jumpers, and I bongo the Tx to the power supply. PSU has a belt clip, so the rig can be easily worn. For extra credit, clip a piggin string to the bongo tie... Now you have a place for your excess cable, and the whole rig can be removed easily when you need to walk away from the pole.
  21. Funny timing for this thread. Albert Brooks is in the movie I started this week.
  22. That was always my biggest gripe with the accusation! Honestly. But that seemed too petty a point to argue when I was genuinely irritated. Either way. People have strong opinions. Go figure
